Missouri and Colorado turn on the DFS lights, but fight continues in Illinois

Daily fantasy sports operators can now check two more states—Missouri and Colorado—off their regulated to-do list.

Last week, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed a measure allowing DFS games to continue in the state, albeit under strict regulations.

The Missouri Fantasy Sports Consumer Protection Act authorizes the state Gaming Commission to oversee local daily fantasy sports operations. Under the newly-signed act, which takes effect in August, will require operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel to pay an annual licensing fee of $10,000 or 10 percent of their revenue, whichever is lower, as well as an annual operation fee of 11.5 percent of their net revenues from participants in the state, according to state media outlet KFVS12.com. Proceeds from DFS fees will go towards the state’s education funds.

The act also requires the creation of a regulatory framework and consumer protection measures for any fantasy sports contests offered in the state, including banning employees of fantasy sports companies from playing in contests offered to the public. The act also restricts the age of daily fantasy players to at least 18 years old and prohibits contests based on college, high school and youth sports.

Bitcoin leaps to 2-year high of $689 amid forecast of supply shrink in July

The lackluster winter has ended, and it’s finally spring in the virtual currency world.

Bitcoin bulldozed its way past the $680 mark on Monday, hitting a high $689.87 with 15.65 million bitcoins in circulation—its highest since September 2014, when the cryptocurrency went on a free fall from more than $1,000 per single bitcoin.

Chinese investors, who are worried their country’s economy will result in the depreciation of the yuan, are still the number one factor behind the unrelenting surge in the price of bitcoin. The increased investment among Chinese traders are believed to account for about 95 percent of the current bitcoin trading volume, according to CoinDesk.

Another reason behind the spike: the scheduled shrink in supply of the digital currency.

Manchester United Locked in Battle With Fnatic to Acquire eSports Team

News reports from all the top eSports media outlets are suggesting that Premier League giants Manchester United are locked in a battle with eSports organisation Fnatic to acquire an unnamed European Overwatch team.

Manchester United is set to join the eSports industry according to press reports. The most successful Premier League side of all time is in a tug of war with eSports team Fnatic to purchase an unnamed European Overwatch side.

United’s interest in eSports is big news for the burgeoning sport. Bundesliga sides Wolfsburg and Schalke already have a few feet in the door, as do fellow Premier League side, West Ham. But this is United, the third largest club in the world behind Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

What is interesting is their choice of eSport. Overwatch, by Blizzard Entertainment, is a first-person shooter (FPS), whereas one would imagine their first foray into the new market would have been via EASports FIFA franchise. That’s the route West Ham took after signing Sean ‘Dragoon’ Allen to represent them in professional FIFA competitions.
