Two bidders shortlisted to take over Baha Mar; Bermuda designates first casino sites

At least two serious bidders are vying to take over the stalled $3.5b Baha Mar integrated resort casino in the Bahamas.

Last week, Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie told legislators that the bankrupt Baha Mar’s receivers had shortlisted two groups as “preferred bidders” for the project. Christie said Sarkis Izmirlian, the project’s original backer before China Export-Import Bank (EXIM) foreclosed on the property, was not involved with either bid.

One of these bidders has a “Bahamian investor connection” but Christie refused to divulge further details. (Sun International founder Sol Kerzner, who has a Bahamian connection, was previously rumored to be interested in taking over Baha Mar.)

Christie said the Bahamian government was not involved in the negotiations currently taking place in China, which is also home to the property’s principal contractor, China Construction America (CCA).

China busts major Euro 2016 online betting ring; Vietnam gambling cases near 5k in H1

At long last, China has made a late run at securing the Euro 2016 illegal betting bust title.

After staying uncharacteristically quiet on the Euro 2016 betting bust front, Wednesday saw Chinese media outlets report that police in Guangdong province have broken up a major online betting syndicate following simultaneous raids in five cities. A total of 543 suspects have been detained as part of an operation dubbed Jufeng-10, which was launched on June 21.

Liang Ruiguo, deputy director of the criminal investigation bureau of the provincial Department of Public Security, said the “soccer betting gang” had attracted “a large sum” of wagers since Euro 2016 kicked off on June 10. The raids resulted in the seizure of cash totaling RMB 3m (US $452k) and the freezing of another RMB 90m ($13.6m) held in 983 bank accounts.

Liang said the Jufeng-10 operation targeted betting agents in Foshan, Shenzhen, Guangshou, Dongguan and Shantou. Police continue to pursue other agents who have so far evaded detection and Liang said “special efforts will be made to crack down on gambling gangs, bankers, key members and beneficiaries.”

Ubet spanked for linking bets and booze; Sky Vegas told to unplug rock star

The UBet wagering division of Australian operator Tatts Group has become the first company to be punished for an advert linking gambling with alcohol.

This week, Liquor and Gaming New South Wales successfully prosecuted Ubet for a “Punters Academy” YouTube video that showed people learning how to bet ‘head to head’ on National Rugby League matches while holding half-drunk glasses of beer.

The same advert resulted in Ubet also being convicted of offering inducements to punters. The convictions resulted in deputy chief magistrate Jane Mottley fining Ubet A$3,300 in addition to awarding court costs of $4,500.

Ubet’s defense had rested on its claims that there was some misunderstanding regarding the ad’s placement and that it had withdrawn the ad once it realized its error. Mottley wasn’t buying it, calling these claims “naïve.”
