EU Commission proposes central database for bitcoin users
European Union’s executive arm is not letting up the fight against the use of digital currency to fund terror groups.
The EU Commission (EC) previously called to bring an end to bitcoin exchanges’ anonymity through an action plan that will require the exchanges to report who used their services and when they were used. Now, EC is proposing another directive to prevent the use of cryptocurrency and its underlying technology for terrorist financing.
This time, the commission wants a central database that will have records of bitcoin and virtual currency users’ identities and wallet addresses, which will be accessible to financial intelligence units of member countries.
The proposal aims to address the gaps in the governments’ oversight of terror group’s unlawful financial tactics—such as using digital currencies—while also “avoiding unnecessary obstacles to the functioning of payments and financial markets for ordinary, law-abiding citizens and businesses.”

Svenska Spel defies tough competition with $510M H1 revenue
Despite “tough competition” competition in the market, state-owned Swedish gambling operator Svenska Spel manage to pull a one percent financial growth in the first half of the year.
In a statement posted on its website, Spel Chief Executive Officer Lennart Source announced that the state-run gaming firm posted a SEK4.4 billion (US$510.5 million) net gaming revenue during the January to June period. The growth represented an increase of 1% on the amount posted in the corresponding period last year.
Consolidated operating profit was up 0.9 percent year-on-year to SEK2.4 billion (US$ 277.27 million), while net income for the firm increased 1.2 percent to SEK2.4 billion (US$277.27 million), with a slightly lower operating margin of 22.1 percent.
Source, however, pointed out that the revenue of Spel was tempered by the industry’s lackluster performance in the second quarter.
Ladbrokes, Coral to sell up to 400 shops before merger gets all-clear
UK’s Competition Markets Authority (CMA) is finally confirming the £2.3 billion merger of Ladbrokes and Gala Coral Group, but on one condition: They still need to offload as many as 400 shops.
According to the gambling watchdog, getting rid of the shops to “one or more buyers” will resolve competition worries over their merger, several media outlets reported.
Announced Tuesday morning, CMA’s decision follows an in-depth investigation of the merger by the regulator, which in May provisionally concluded that its necessary for the two gambling giants to sell up to 400 of its shops—around one-tenth of the combined estate—to lessen the competition in 642 local areas.
CMA inquiry chairman Martin Cave said that even though “online betting has grown substantially in recent years,” the regulator found that “a significant portion of customers still choose to bet in shops,” and they will continue to do so even after the merger pushes through.

The question that needs to be answered is “Could the rush experienced by gambling be increased by virtual reality”. It is clear that there are few industries immune to the impact of VR, and the casino industry is definitely no exception. Before discussing the impact of virtual reality, one needs to understand the technology that provides users with a feeling of actually being part of an inexistent environment. 2016 is the year in which virtual reality is expected to go mainstream as developers have managed to find the perfect formula. VR also appears to be taking off due to mass production of inexpensive hardware such as PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift.
Tractica, a company, specializing in comprehensive market analysis, reported that 2016 would be the make or break year for VR and that the combined revenue for VR accessories, HMDs and VR content would increase by 142% after reaching $108.8 million in 2014 and is expected to grow to $21.8 billion by 2020.
The Clinical Psychology Forum described technology addiction in 1995 (in) with a statement that there was little doubt that activity that involved a person/machine that interaction would not stay and through the introduction of virtual reality the number of potential technological addicts would increase. At the time there was little experiential evidence that technological addictions exist as a clinical entity, although extrapolations from research into video slot and fruit machine addiction suggested that they do exist.
