FanDuel gets UK license ahead of August launch

Daily fantasy sports operator FanDuel has finally received its long-awaited UK gambling license—just in time for its planned debut across the pond.

The Edinburgh-based company confirmed in May that it is eyeing to launch in the UK in August, although they couldn’t make an official announcement since the move is “still provisional” as they wait for the UK license application to be approved.

FanDuel has previously been given the green light to operate remote gambling software, but it’s not yet allowed to operate remote pool betting—for its football-only product—in UK.

However, a quick search on the UK Gambling Commission’s (UKGC) website on Thursday showed that FanDuel’s license status has already been changed from “in progress” to “active.”

Missouri lays down emergency rules as legalized DFS begins operation in September

Missouri is starting to unfurl the red carpet for daily fantasy sports (DFS) with a set of emergency rules on how it will work in the state.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Missouri Gaming Commission have come up with a set of emergency rules with more than a month before DFS operators could resume their businesses in the state.

As a safety net, state regulators unanimously approved a betting ban on college, high school or youth sports. They also want a tax and fee structure designed to raise money for education.

The Missouri Gaming Commission also reminded DFS operators that they will pay an annual registration fee of $10,000 or 10 percent of entry fees to the state, as well as an annual administration fee of 11.5 percent of revenue.

Curaçao’s online gambling licensees told there’s a new sheriff in town

The government of Curaçao plans to tighten control over its online gambling sector, but it’s unclear what form these new controls may take.

On Tuesday, Stef Blok, the Netherlands’ Acting Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, replied to questions submitted by other MPs regarding Curaçao-licensed operators serving Dutch gamblers.

The Daily Herald quoted Blok saying that he and State Secretary of Security and Justice Klass Dijkhoff were serious about preventing Curaçao licensees from offering unauthorized gambling within Dutch borders.

Earlier this month, Dutch parliamentarians put forth a motion to impose greater control over online gambling activity in Curaçao, a constituent country of the Netherlands. Blok said Dijkhoff would respond to this motion at a later date.

A child dies every 30-seconds due to Malaria.

Someone, somewhere, likely sub-Saharan Africa, has just passed away in the time it took me to write my opening statement.

Some experts believe 2.7 million people die each year, and 70% of those deaths happen to children under five years of age. To put a visual on that consider that the mortality rate is the equivalent of seven jumbo jets full of children vanishing daily.

Australia football clubs wants sports betting ban in amateur league

Fearing that semi-professional competitions will be tainted with more match-fixing incidents, National Premier League NSW (NPL NSW) clubs have called on Football Federation Australia (FFA) to ban gambling on state league games.

The call came after APIA Leichhardt, one of NPL NSW’s affiliated teams, claimed that there was misconduct within the competition, with players or staff betting, match-fixing, spot-fixing or providing insider information, according to the news website Sydney Morning Herald.

APIA Leichhardt president Tony Raciti has brought the issue to the Football NSW immediately after allegations of players gambling on results have reached his office. He is convinced that the alleged match-fixing could be taking place in the NPL NSW Division 1.

In his submission to the state body, Raciti urged the FFA to prohibit gambling on semi-professional games, as well as amateur youth football and fall in line with many other codes by restricting match betting to professional tiers.

UK gambling survey shows young adults losing interest in online gambling

Young British adults aren’t gambling as much as they used to, stoking operators’ fears that their core products no longer hold the same appeal that they once did.

The latest gambling participation survey conducted by researchers Populus on behalf of the UK Gambling Commission shows 16% of respondents participating in some form of online gambling in the first half of 2016. The figure is up one point from 2015, which was unchanged from similar surveys dating back to 2013.

But when broken down by age, only 11% of respondents aged 18-24 years reported gambling online, down from 12% in 2015 and from 17% in 2014, which was up two points from 2013.

All other age demographics reported higher numbers in the current survey. Most of the gains were single digits, while those in the 45-54 bracket rose four points to 22%, 55-64’s rose two points to 16% and senior citizens were also up two points to 9%.

South Korean auditor urges curbs on locals entering Kangwon Land casino

The only casino in South Korea that allows local residents to gamble could face new restrictions thanks to its apparent impact on problem gambling behavior.

On Tuesday, South Korea’s Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) released new statistics regarding visits to Kangwon Land, a resort in a remote mountainous region north of Seoul that contains the only one of the country’s 17 casinos at which local residents can legally place a bet.

Under South Korea’s gambling laws, citizens are allowed to enter Kangwon Land’s casino up to 180 days per year. The restriction is far more liberal than in other jurisdictions that attempt to limit local gambling, such as Singapore, which caps visits at no more than 72 per year and charges locals S$100 per visit.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the BAI believes Kangwon Land’s owner High1 Resort has failed to take preemptive steps to curb problem gambling. Kangwon Land slaps a “compulsive” tag on gamblers who visit its casino more than 100 times per year, but no further action to restrict access is taken provided a gambler sign up for a problem gambling consultation.
