SportPesa-Southampton betting partners; Ladbrokes sponsor rugby MPs

Kenyan online betting operator SportPesa has signed on as the new official betting partner of English Premier League side Southampton FC.

On Wednesday, SportPesa announced that it had signed a “multi-million pound three-year deal” with Southampton that will take effect in the 2016-17 EPL season. The deal comes just days after SportPesa inked a shirt deal with the EPL’s Hull City FC.

Terms were not disclosed but Southampton CEO Gareth Rogers called it “by far our biggest partnership in this sector in the club’s history and one of our largest partnership deals to date.”

Neither the club nor the betting operator revealed specifically what material benefits SportPesa will enjoy via the partnership, but these types of deals generally allow the operator ample branding opportunities both inside the team’s home stadium and via digital channels.

Quebec’s online gambling blocking plans challenged by telecom industry group

Canada’s leading wireless service provider industry group has mounted the latest court challenge of Quebec’s controversial plan to block certain online gambling domains.

On Wednesday, the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) filed papers with Quebec Superior Court asking them to reject the IP-blocking provisions of the province’s Bill 74 omnibus legislation as unconstitutional.

In May, Quebec approved Bill 74, which allows the Loto-Quebec provincial gaming monopoly to submit a blacklist of online gambling sites that compete with its own Espacejeux.com site. While this list is reportedly still being finalized, local internet service providers who fail to comply with the blocking orders could face fines of up to $100k per incident.

Earlier this month, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC), a non-profit consumer protection group, filed the first official court challenge of Bill 74, arguing that the law was an unconstitutional affront to the federal government’s authority over telecommunications issues.

Unibet’s record quarter driven by Euro 2016, acquisitions; Kambi inks R Franco

Online gambling operator Unibet continues to set new records in what is shaping up as a banner year for the company.

Figures released Wednesday show revenue rising 57% year-on-year to £126.6m in the three months ending June 30. Earnings totaled £22m, up from £19m in the same period last year, but profit after tax was up only £100k to £13.5m due to heavy marketing surrounding the Euro 2016 football tournament.

The revenue gains were aided by £14.7m in contributions from recent acquisitions Stan James Online and iGame Group. Absent these contributions, revenue was up 39% while earnings would have fallen 8% to £17.4m.

Euro 2016 betting generated revenue of £19.6m and a hefty 14% betting margin. The tourney also helped drive active customer numbers to 1.13m at the end of Q2, nearly twice the 603k at the end of Q2 2015. Around 216k of these new customers came via the Stan James and iGame acquisitions.

Goa casinos not boosting crime rate but are apparently running the government

Casinos in the Indian state of Goa have not led to a rise in criminal activity, according to the state’s Chief Minister.

On Wednesday, CM Laxmikant Parsekar delivered a written reply to a query by Goa’s Legislative Assembly regarding the impact of the state’s five floating casinos and 11 land-based gaming venues on the state’s crime rate. Parsekar noted that “no such complaints have been received by the home department.”

Goa Police official stats for 2015 showed the crime rate falling 31.2% from 2014. Theft cases were down 48%, ‘heinous’ crimes were 26% lower and crimes against women fell nearly 20%.

Goa ranked second among all Indian states and union territories in the number of crimes committed by and against tourists but tourism is Goa’s primary industry, and thus it attracts significantly more foreigners than other Indian states.
