DraftKings, FanDuel pitch return of daily fantasy sports to Nevada

Elated with their triumphant return to New York, daily fantasy sports sites are making a bid to get legal in the gambling mecca of Nevada.

DraftKings and FanDuel—two of the biggest daily fantasy sports operators today—have reportedly tabled a new bill that would create a “fantasy gaming license” as well as design a system where daily fantasy sports operators could get legal in the state for a licensing fee.

According to the Associated Press, the five-page proposalsuggested a $10,000 annual licensing fee for larger operators and require owners with at least a 15-percent stake in a company to identify themselves to the state—which categorized last fall daily fantasy sports sites as gambling, meaning they have to halt operations if they didn’t have a license.

The short proposal, however, left members of Nevada’s Gaming Policy Committee unimpressed. The committee said the proposal lacks criminal background checks, a necessary step for Nevada’s casino industry to shed associations from organized crime. Nevada officials also wanted to know if DFS will bring jobs and revenue to the state when their proposed licensing fees would only add up to $30,000 a year—not enough to cover the cost of regulating the companies.

US feds rack up $1.6 million profit on seized Silk Road bitcoin

Remember when the U.S. Marshals announced several weeks ago that they are planning to auction some of the assets they seized from several cases involving the dark web commerce market Silk Road? Well, the feds pushed through with the plan and emerged with close to $2 million in profit.

Last Monday, a winning bidder claimed 2,700 bitcoin worth $1.58 million at the auction held by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to CoinDesk. The auction required a $100,000 deposit, and only five registered bidders sought to claim the bitcoin block, USMS reps told the news outlet.

If you’re wondering who won the bid, you’re not alone. USMS people said winning bidders can make themselves known if they choose, so of course the winner of the most recent auction will remain a mystery. Previous auction winners include bitcoin exchange itBit, investor Tim Draper and trading firm Cumberland Mining.

This isn’t the first time that the U.S. government auction off the bitcoins it confiscated in the cases involving Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. In November, the USMS sold 44,000 bitcoins worth $14.6 million to 11 bidders.

California poker bill will likely fold again—for now

Despite making solid headway in the past several months, it appears that California’s online poker legislation is on its way back to the shelf this year.

Assemblyman Adam Gray’s AB 2863 was expected to be voted on Monday in the California Assembly, but key stakeholder groups—PokerStars, its tribal allies, and advocacy group Poker Players Alliance, among others—failed to come together on a final compromise, which led to the bill being shelved again for another year.

Just like in the past, the sticking point remained to be the definition of a “bad actor,” or a person or company that would be deemed unsuitable to participate in the California’s regulated online poker market. The coalition of hardline tribes led by the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians wanted these so-called bad actors to be completely excluded from the state’s market for “ethical reasons.”

The “compromise” version of Gray’s bill stipulated that PokerStars—clearly the tribes’ prime target—would have to be evaluated by California’s gaming regulators when it applies for a license instead of being outright barred via legislation. But the Pechangas and Agua Calientes managed to force an amendment to AB 2863, which once again included the bad actor clause.

Philippines opens doors to online gambling operators targeting overseas punters

Amid its crackdown on gambling operations that cater to the economically vulnerable portion of the country, the Philippines is now punting on international-facing operators as a new revenue source.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte made headlines when he vowed to stop online gambling in the country—a surprise announcement that left the industry and even state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) unsure on what “online” gambling activities the president was out to close.

The government’s gambling crackdown has already caused one firm to shut down, and to offset the losses it sustained, PAGCOR is opening its doors to casino and betting operators that target non-locals.

PAGCOR CEO Andrea Domingo revealed on Tuesday that the regulator is “readying application forms,” for the licenses that “would be issued for six months initially.”

PokerStars Launch Bubble Rush Tournaments

PokerStars has launched a new tournament format designed to get you to the bubble as quickly as possible and then extended blind levels to create a deeper stacked feel.

The new format begins as a hyper-turbo with a 10,000 starting stack and blinds increasing every three minutes (so far so good if you are a recreational player looking to get lucky fast). The blind levels then expand after the bubble bursts allowing for deeper stacked play.

There are 20 of these things running daily on PokerStars with an associated hyper-turbo satellite structure. Midweek buy-ins range between $0.55 and $33 with an increase to $109 on the weekends.

PokerNews captured the details of the first-ever Bubble Rush event held on Stars. It was a $22 buy-in event with a $10,000 Guarantee. 480 players started the game, and 71 made it into the money, where the blinds increased to 12-minutes. The chip leader had 27bb at the end of the bubble period.
