Marked card scam takes Macau casino VIP room for $3m

An unidentified Macau casino has been victimized by a con job involving the fraudulent winning of some HKD 24.4m (US $3.1m).

On Monday, Macau Judiciary Police announced that they had arrested one casino pit manager and three VIP gaming collaborators, aka junket associates, after receiving a report on Friday from an unspecified casino regarding a VIP gaming room fraud.

Police said the pit manager had stolen a deck of playing cards from the VIP room at which he worked. These cards were then apparently marked in a way that allowed the three other conspirators to identify the card values before they were turned face up. Police said they were still investigating the manner in which the cards were marked.

PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam told GGRAsia that the scammers wagered a minimum of HKD 1m per hand, winning HKD 24.4m within about half an hour’s time. All the wagering was done with a single shoe of cards.

Online casino affiliate accused of hacking major university websites

An online casino affiliate has been accused of hacking numerous higher education websites to boost its Google search results.

Last week, web marketing agency eTraffic published a report indicating that an unidentified online casino affiliate site’s surge to the top of Google’s search engine rankings appeared to have been the result of some seriously ‘black hat’ optimization techniques.

Between January and September 2016, the affiliate site in question had gone from Google keyword rankings in the 40s and 50s to top-10, including number one rankings for traditionally pricey keywords/phrases like ‘real money slots,’ ‘online slots real money,’ ‘real slots,’ ‘real online slots’ and ‘play real money slots online.’

eTraffic notes that one of the key factors Google employs when ranking search results is the number of backlinks from top level domains like .gov and .edu. The affiliate had 76 such backlinks from major educational sites in the US and other countries, including New York University, Dartmouth College, Duke University and Stanford University.

Bloomberry denies Iao Kun’s claims of extending Jeju Sun deal deadline

Philippines-based casino operator Bloomberry Resorts has publicly refuted a junket operator’s claim that it had been given more time to close the purchase of Bloomberry’s South Korean casino business.

On June 23, Bloomberry announced that it had reached a deal to sell its Jeju Sun Hotel & Casino to Macau junket investor Iao Kun Group Holding Company (IKGH). The deal was expected to close within 45 days of the announcement.

Last week, during an analyst call to discuss IKGH’s grim Q2 results, IKGH director Jim Preissler claimed his company was having trouble arranging financing for the $102.6m deal, but reassured investors that Bloomberry had agreed to extend the 45-day deadline to allow IKGH more time to raise the readies.

On Monday, Bloomberry filed a terse notice with the Philippine Stock Exchange, titled ‘Clarification of News Reports.’ The notice referenced Preissler’s comments, then stated unequivocally that Bloomberry “has not agreed to the extension of the closing date for the said transaction with Iao Kun.”
