Slots are tops for German millennial casino players

German casinos have been visited by one-third of the country’s population, according to a new YouGuv survey.

The survey, which was commissioned by German casino association Deutscher Spielbankenverband (DSbV), showed that 33% of respondents had placed some kind of casino bet at least once in their lives. The figures were higher for men (39%) than women (28%), and also higher in the former West Germany (34%) than in the now defunct DDR (28%).

At the end of 2015, Germany had 66 licensed casinos, offering a combined 550 gaming tables and around 7,500 slot machines. They generated combined revenue of €556m last year, the bulk of that (€399m) from slots play.

Slots may generate the most revenue, but the YouGuv survey found roulette to be Germany’s most popular casino option, with 63% of respondents admitting to placing a spinning wheel wager, while slots were enjoyed by roughly half of respondents.

Poland urged to scrap punitive sports betting turnover tax

Poland’s plan to maintain its 12% tax on online sports betting turnover won’t fix its broken regulatory regime, warns the Remote Gambling Association (RGA).

This summer, Poland unveiled long-awaited amendments to the Polish Gambling Act, which maintained the country’s reviled 12% tax on sports betting turnover, ignoring recommendations by cabinet ministers to opt for a less punitive 20% tax on betting revenue.

On Tuesday, the RGA issued a statement warning Poland that its turnover tax “has so far failed to build an attractive regime and it is bound to continue to do so, if not changed.” Only five operators have been issued Polish licenses since the country officially launched its regulated online gambling market in 2011.

The RGA believes the turnover tax makes it impossible for online operators to provide “the required level of value and choice to Polish consumers,” leaving said consumers to “seek out better offerings from operators who are licensed outside of Poland.” The RGA also heaped scorn on Polish efforts to block punters’ access to these sites, saying such measures “can be easily circumvented.”

British Columbia warns international gambling sites off its turf

The Canadian province of British Columbia is warning international online gambling operators to stay off the provincial gambling monopoly’s turf.

Late last month, the British Columbia Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch (GPEB) sent a letter to the CEOs of 19 different online gambling operators who accept wagers from BC residents, warning them that their activities are “likely to be contrary to both the Criminal Code of Canada and the Gaming Control Act.”

The letter, a copy of which was obtained by eGaming Review, claims that only the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) “may conduct, manage or operate a lottery scheme in BC” and no other entity is allowed to dip its toe into BC’s gambling pool without the GPEB’s say-so.

(It’s worth noting that BC’s self-serving interpretation of the Criminal Code isn’t shared by many legal observers, who have argued that international sites are on safe legal footing as long as they maintain no physical presence within Canada.)

Genius Sports partners with British Horseracing Authority to develop its betting data monitoring technology

(London, 21 September 2016) Genius Sports, a global leader in sports data technology, commercialisation and integrity services, has been selected by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) to develop and provide an automated Price Monitoring System that will further enhance the BHA’s integrity analysts’ ability to identify and investigate irregular betting patterns in real-time.

The Price Monitoring System, delivered via Genius Sports’ proprietary Sport Integrity Monitor (SportIM) platform, will monitor live betting prices, industry averages and odds fluctuations from all major bookmakers via a simple desktop application.

The system will also assist with the processes involved in sending pricing data and alerts in real-time via Genius Sports’ API to the on-course stewards in order to increase the efficiency of race day integrity monitoring.

By closely monitoring the changes in betting prices, the BHA will be alerted to any fluctuations at levels that are deemed unusual and historical price information will be available to assist investigations and analysis. The new software will make these processes faster, more comprehensive and more efficient than those currently in place.

Joey Barton Under Investigation by The SFA After Allegedly Betting on Celtic to Lose Against Barcelona in Champions League Mauling

Rangers midfielder, Joey Barton, is once again in the news for all the wrong reason after news sources reveal the Scottish Football Association and the Gambling Commission are investigating him over a breach of gambling rules.

On Monday, Glasgow Rangers suspended Joey Barton for three weeks after a training ground altercation with his teammate Andy Halliday following their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of arch-rival Celtic.

Surprised?

Today, we learn, that the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and the Gambling Commission, are investigating allegations that Barton gambled on the outcome of the Champions League match between Celtic and Barcelona.
