Brent Musburger fronts new sports betting info network

A new sports betting information network headed by broadcasting legend Brent Musburger is making its debut just in time for Super Bowl LI.

Monday brought word of the official launch of VSiN (Vegas Stats & Information Network), a “multi-channel network dedicated to sports gambling information.” VSiN will be beamed via web, live streaming, radio, mobile and social channels from a custom-built studio in the sportsbook of the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas.

VSiN was founded by Brian Musburger, son of Brent (pictured), who announced his retirement from sports broadcasting last week. The 77-year-old Musburger plans to serve as VSiN’s managing editor and host VSiN’s main afternoon show Thursdays through Mondays, starting with a special broadcast on Sunday ahead of the Big Game.

VSiN will make its official debut at VSiN.com and via SiriusXM radio on Monday, February 27, offering five hours of live programming per day to start. In addition to Musburger Sr., VSiN has enlisted the on-air talents of boxing announcer Al Bernstein, and the company plans to announce more hosts in the coming months.

DraftKings get Malta DFS license, plot German market launch

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings is plotting some major European expansion after receiving a new license from Malta’s gaming regulators.

Last August, Malta exempted DFS from requiring a gambling license. On Monday, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced that its new Skill Games Regulations were now in force, and that DFS fell under its definition of “controlled skill games.”

The MGA’s new skill games approach focuses on “consumer protection, fairness of the game and the prevention of criminality.” Skill games licenses are valid for five years, with fees running at €8,500 per year. Licensees are required to pay 5% tax on gaming revenue, with total tax payable capped at €466k per year.

Almost immediately, DraftKings announced that it had received one of the MGA’s new skill games licenses, clearing the way for the company to expand into new European Union markets. DraftKings launched operations in the UK early last year after winning a gambling license from the UK Gambling Commission.

Cambodia’s gambling spike prompts renewed calls for crackdown

Cambodia may be facing the risk of losing its Vietnamese VIPs soon, but that’s not deterring authorities from enforcing its ban on locals gambling.

Sihanoukville officials are asking casinos in the seaside province to start enforcing the laws, which they claimed have been “widely flouted” recently. According to the Phnom Penh Post, Preah Sihanouk Governor Yun Min issued a statement last January 20 in which he called for “increased vigilance” following reports of “an increase in the number of Cambodians gambling.”

“There are some casinos that do not comply with the government’s strict instructions and have allowed Cambodian clients to gamble, resulting in impacts on public order and social security,” the report stated, quoting Min’s announcement.

Sihanoukville City Gov. Y Sokleng, however, insisted the government has no authority to enforce the ban.

Super Bowl 2017: Who will Trump pick to win the game?

It’s the time of the year again, ladies and gentlemen. For prop bets at the Super Bowl, that is.

There’s no denying that betting on prop bets at the Super Bowl is pretty fun, but every year, it seems that the same type of props are being offered—so much so that they’ve lost a little bit of originality. For the Super Bowl LI, however, oddsmaker Bodog kicked things up a notch and came up with a plethora—their words—of entertaining and never before seen lines.

Lady Gaga’s hair and the National Anthem

Now, there’s nothing like Lady Gaga to get football fans excited, right? No? Well, even if you’re not a fan, you can’t deny that Stefani Germanotta has caused a lot of uproar over the years with her music, or at least with her fashion choices. At Bodog, the odds of Lady Gaga coming on stage with blonde hair is at 1/4, while any other color is at 5/2.

Casino operators now hunt for Japanese partners

Japanese lawmakers have yet to lay down the ground rules for the much awaited opening of the country’s casino but global operators are already starting to jostle for a better market position.

Reuters reported that international casino operators are now on the hunt for local partners and venue hosts in Japan as early as January even though Japanese lawmakers may roll out the ground rules by the end of 2017.

A political source told the news wire agency that there’s a likelihood that Japanese lawmakers may require casino operators to team up with local authorities and bid for licenses to run integrated resorts.

Japan may greenlight two to three casinos, with locations and operators chosen by 2019 and the casinos open by 2023, the source further said.

City of Dreams Manila is Melco’s bright spot: Nomura

The City of Dreams Manila remains to be one of the financial nutrients that could sustain Melco Crown Entertainment as its Macau gambling arm continues to recover.

In its last Wednesday’s note, Japan-based credit analyst Nomura expressed its optimism on City of Dream’s Manila due to the country’s resilient junket and VIP demand. The firms expects a better, fourth quarter 2016 data coming from the City of Dreams, it said.

Nomura Analysts Harry C. Curtis, Daniel Adam and Brian H. Dobson all predicted that the overall demand in the Manila gaming market “may continue to increase more than the supply growth”

“Despite political pressure on Chinese nationals and increased violence related to the Philippine government’s crackdown on drug traffickers, we estimate market revenues grew in excess of 40 percent in fourth quarter 2016,” the credit-debt watcher pointed out.
