Melco International mulls upping stakes in Entertainment Gaming Asia

Lawrence Ho’s Melco International Development Ltd. is considering a complete takeover of electronic gaming machines supplier Entertainment Gaming Asia.

Nasdaq-listed Entertainment Gaming Asia announced in a filing that its biggest shareholder, Melco International, “is reviewing potential strategic alternatives” that may include “making an offer… to acquire all of the outstanding common stock” of the company that it does not already own.

Melco International, which holds approximately 64.8 percent of Entertainment Gaming Asia, is drumming up a proposal to stockholders “in the range of approximately US$2.10 to US$2.25 per share, in cash via a tender offer.”

“Any such Proposed Transaction would be subject to a number of conditions, including the valid tender of at least a majority of the issued and outstanding Common Stock, excluding Common Stock owned by EGT Entertainment,” the company said. “Any such transaction would be financed using available cash on hand.”

New Cambodia border casino sparks trade war with Thailand

A controversial new Cambodia casino has sparked a minor trade war with neighboring Thailand.

On April 7, the new Saitaku Resort and Casino had its soft opening in Cambodia’s Oddar Meancheay province, just across the border from Thailand’s Buriram region. Since Cambodian nationals are prohibited from gambling in Cambodian casinos, the new casino will depend almost exclusively on an influx of Thai gamblers.

Trouble is, Thai authorities barred their citizens from crossing over the Chong Sai Taku checkpoint to visit the casino. While 300 invited VIP guests were allowed to attend the casino opening, where Thai pop singers were on hand to provide entertainment, Thai border guards prevented non-invited guests from making the trip.

The Nation reported that the Thai guards were tight-lipped regarding the reason behind the restrictions, saying only that they were following orders. A Thai Army commander denied any special rules were in force, saying the military was simply following normal procedures by only allowing residents of the immediate vicinity to cross into Cambodia.

US$200M casino resort to rise in Cambodia

Cambodia is building a multi-million dollar casino resort near the border of Vietnam with hopes of luring Vietnamese gamblers that have been barred from their own casinos.

Khmer Times reported that casino developer Virtue Resources Corp. (VRC) is allotting US$200 million for the construction of the 50-hectare y casino resort in Bavet City, Cambodia, which is just a stones-throw away from Vietnam’s Moc Bai border.

VRC executives explained that they have decided to construct an integrated casino resort in Cambodia because they have seen the potential of economic growth in the country for the next 10 years.

They added that the Empire World city will boost up the local economy by attract neighboring Vietnamese into the city. Currently under Cambodian law, its citizens are barred from using the country’s existing casinos.

Robust online gambling industry to gobble-up more Philippine office spaces in 2017

The fruits of a robust online gambling industry are now trickling down to Philippines’ office market, with analysts from real estate consulting firm LeeChiu Property Consultants (LPC) expecting the sector to take up more office spaces this year.

Manila Standard reported that the online gambling industry is now the second biggest demand driver for office space in the Southeast Asian nation, closely trailing behind the country’s business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

For this year, LPC chief executive David Leechiu estimated that the online gambling industry will take up 400,000 to 500,000 square meters of office space this year. This, according to Leechiu, would account for half of the 800,000 sqm projected takeup of the business process outsourcing industry.

“In the last 15 years, the BPO has the office market all for itself. Now, we have somebody also chasing space from the mark and that is online gaming industry and they did this practically overnight,” Leechiu said, according to the news report. “The online gaming industry could potentially reach BPO industry demand numbers within the first year of entry in the market. That’s how big the potential could be.”

Why bitcoin poses a huge challenge for Visa

Contrary to popular belief, the costs to compete with the so-called established behemoths—ahem Visa—are within any bitcoin miner or company’s reach.

The current perception is modest sized companies will find it difficult to compete with financial services giants like Visa, which has impregnable technological resources. In response to a tweet that “it would take multi terabyte blocks to get to Visa levels on 1st layer,” bitcoin blogger Tetsu bigstone Oishi did the math, and pointed out that “the Visa capacity is 50,000 tx/s.” This, he said, is 7,142 times bigger than bitcoin, “so we need 7GB block. Exactly 1 TB/day.”

Terabyte, of course, is often associated with expensive storage. But as the lot at CoinGeek pointed out, mega and fast storage doesn’t need to be expensive—if people know where to get it.

According to CoinGeek’s calculation, “bitcoin can not only challenge Visa for under $20 million PA; at only $20,000 each node to a miner, it even makes money.”

Philippine immigration nabs 55 Chinese involved in proxy betting

Philippine operatives swooped down the Freeport Area of Bataan, just north of the country’s capital, and rounded up 55 Chinese nationals involved in illegal proxy betting.

Lawyer Ma. Antonette Bucasas-Mangrobang, spokesperson for the Philippine Bureau of Immigration, confirmed the arrest of the 55 Chinese fugitives, which she said “posed risk to public safety and security.”

The Bureau of Immigration identified 17 of the 55 arrested Chinese fugitives as Chen Liuhui, Lin Qiulong, Lin Qiuhu, Lin Qinghua, Lin Qiuhuang, Zhu Chenhui, Chen Fan, Lin Tingting, Wu Xiongxiong, Lin Haiyan, Zhang Lili; Shen Weibing, Gao Qingshan, Shi Zhibin, Fang Jie, Chen Zhitian and Li Jianfeng.

“They are all considered fugitives since they all have standing arrest warrants for economic crimes. The Chinese government issued the arrest warrants against them,” Mangrobang told CalvinAyre.com. “For our part, we arrested them because they no longer have legal documents to stay in the country after the Chinese government cancelled their passports.”

PlanetWin365 is Italy’s most counterfeit online betting brand

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it can also a colossal pain in the butt if the imitators are using your name to break the law.

Over the weekend, attorney Fabio Maggesi, who specializes in internet and trademark law, told Panorama.it that online counterfeiting in Italy had increased by more than 50% over the last five years. Maggesi claimed major Italian brands were routinely pirated by scammers hawking cheap imitations of the original products via websites based outside the country.

These knockoffs, many of them offered by Tunisia-based websites, aren’t limited to clothing products such as handbags or shoes, but also extend to website domains – online gambling domains among them. And Maggesi declared that “by far the most counterfeited brand in the panorama of online betting” is PlanetWin365.

PlanetWin365 is the flagship brand of Austria’s SKS365 Group, which operates land-based betting services in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Montenegro, and Serbia in addition to holding online licenses in Malta and Spain.

ThePOGG launches bonus ratings & reviews

ThePOGG.com is proud to launch their casino welcome bonus ratings and reviews which features detailed analysis and value simulations to help players decide if a bonus is right for them. We all know that when confronted with varying terms and conditions it is next to impossible to tell which of two bonuses is better. Our new system addresses this issue, making life easy for players everywhere.

Players look to casino review portals for advice and recommendations to help them make the right decision on where to play and to find the best bonuses. Most player portals advertise bonuses but ultimately provide recommendations based on their opinion, without any sound basis for stating that one bonus is “better” than another. Players care about value and don’t like being deceived and this analysis aims to bring to light the true value of a bonus.

ThePOGG simulated over 350 welcome bonuses (with almost 200 reports still to be published) to determine the value of each bonus for low rollers, mid rollers, high rollers and super high rollers. These figures are then provided so players can get an accurate assessment of how good a bonus is for them once all of the terms and conditions and their own playing style is taken into consideration.

This project was undertaken in partnership with BeatingBonuses using a tool developed several years ago for the assessment of bonuses, but has been implemented in a way intended to replicate various categories of normal player. Each simulation repeats the bonus 10 million times then takes the average result to provide a value for each player type.

Don Best provides strategic insight ahead of GiGse

Don Best Sports is one of the high profile gaming organisations appearing at this month’s GiGse, which is being held at the Marriot Marquis Marina, San Diego, 26th – 28th April. The company’s president, Benjie Cherniak, provides insight on the status of sports betting in the United States and the main obstacles it has to overcome.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to overcome with progress on sports betting?

The biggest obstacles remain State and Federal legislative barriers. We also see continued resistance both politically and from some of the professional leagues themselves.

While the leagues do not buy into the legislative approach of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), they and other vested entities are keen on looking to formulate a strategy that would afford them a piece of the revenue stream while offering integrity protections. We might then see doors opening sooner on a state by state, if not Federal basis. One may not anticipate such a move in the immediate future, mired as it is in (federal) restrictions currently and the fact that the new US government and Attorney General likely do not lean favourably towards a federal approach.
