SEC green-lights review of decision to junk bitcoin ETF filing

The proposal to list what could have been the first U.S. exchange-traded fund tracking digital currency bitcoin is up for another review in the Securities and Exchange Commission.

If you recall, the commission SEC rejected the proposal of investors Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss to list their Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust, an ETF created essentially to provide exposure for commodity buyers to bitcoin, on the Bats BTZ exchange back in March.

At the time, the commission said “it does not find the proposal to be consistent with Section 6(b)(5) of the Exchange Act, which requires, among other things, that the rules of a national securities exchange be designed to prevent fraudulent and manipulative acts and practices and to protect investors and the public interest.”

This prompted Bats to file a petition seeking a review of the SEC decision, which was approved by the commission.

March Madness drives Nevada’s record b-ball betting revenue

Nevada casino gaming revenue nearly topped the coveted $1b mark in March as basketball and blackjack betting offset baccarat’s decline.

Figures released Wednesday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board show total casino gaming win hitting $991m in March, 7.45% higher than the same month last year and $45m more than the state reported in February 2017. Revenue on the Las Vegas Strip was up 8.1% to $542m while Downtown Las Vegas casinos saw their revenue spike 22.6% to $62.9m.

Nevada’s banks of slot machines had a good month, rising 6.3% to $655.4m, while the total games & tables tally rose 9.8% to $335.5m. Blackjack drove the table numbers, rising 12% to $112.7m, nearly twice the $58.4m generated by baccarat, which was down more than 11% year-on-year.

Craps also had a good month, gaining 8.8% to $35.1m, while roulette headed in the opposite direction, falling 3.1% to $28.6m. The state’s poker revenue – which includes a negligible contribution from the state’s flaccid online poker market – was basically flat at $9.6m.

Ministry official to discuss remote gaming regulation at Gaming in Holland Conference

The head of the task force overseeing the modernization of gambling policy at the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice has confirmed his attendance at the upcoming Gaming in Holland Conference & Expo in order to give a preliminary briefing on the secondary legislation that will accompany the country’s long-waited remote gaming bill.

The Dutch remote gaming bill, which passed the Lower House last June, is widely expected to be adopted by the Senate later this year. Detailed regulations to accompany the bill once it has been enacted, are currently being drafted behind closed doors at the Ministry of Security and Justice.

Dennis van Breemen, Program Manager at the Ministry of Security and Justice, has agreed to brief attendees of the Gaming in Holland Conference & Expo on the current state of the regulatory proposals, ahead of the industry consultation that is scheduled to start in the weeks or months following the conference.

At this briefing, Mr Van Breemen will be supported by a number of policy officers to help answer questions from the audience.

Crown Resorts’ architect of China push leaves casino group

Michael Chen, the man who led Crown Resorts’ push into China, has reportedly left the James Packer’s casino company following the arrest of 18 employees and associates on the mainland last year.

In October, mainland Chinese authorities arrested 18 Crown staff members, including three Australian nationals, on charges of promoting gambling activity at Crown casinos to Chinese VIPs. So far, one staffer has been released, while others are awaiting trial on as-yet unspecified charges.

Chen wasn’t among those caught up in the raids on the mainland, but the Crown executive was reportedly placed on “permanent leave” after the arrests, according to ABC’s Four Corners program. His LinkedIn page showed Chen, who was Crown Resorts’ president of international marketing, left the company in March after more than five years of service.

Sources familiar with the matter told The Australian Financial Review that Chen was behind Crown’s decision “to engage more directly with Chinese high rollers, rather than go through the traditional junket channel” amid the Beijing government’s crackdown on corruption.

China hails cross-border online gambling bust in Philippines

Philippine authorities have deported 55 Chinese nationals arrested earlier this month for their involvement in an illegal online gambling ring.

On Wednesday, China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced that its Philippine counterparts had returned 55 suspected ‘economic criminals’ to their home country after the Chinese embassy revoked their passports.

The suspects were arrested on April 18 after the MPS tipped off the Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) regarding an illegal online proxy betting operation in the Freeport Area of Bataan. At least 38 of those arrested by the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit were reportedly involved in the illegal gambling operation, while the remaining suspects were accused of other fraudulent economic activities.

The MPS claimed that a total of 99 suspects had been arrested in relation to the case, while declining to provide specifics on the status or nationalities of the other 44 individuals.

PAGCOR Q1 net income up 26.9%

State-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) is enjoying a robust net income in first three months of 2017, 26.9 percent higher than last year’s figures.

Data from PAGCOR, which was made available on their website on Wednesday, showed that the state regulator generated a net income of PHP1.32 billion (US$26.5 million) in January to March 2017 period compared to PHP1.04 billion (US$22.15 million) in the same period last year.

What will happen on Donald Trump’s 100th day in office? A betting guide

Donald Trump’s first 100 days in the Oval Office have been, to say the least, busy.

Trump, however, wants it known that he doesn’t care about the “artificial” and “ridiculous” 100-day point of his presidency. In a recent tweet, the hardworking leader of the free world pointed out, “No matter how much I accomplish during the ridiculous standard of the first 100 days, and it has been a lot (including S.C.), media will kill!”

But in case anyone is wondering, Trump has signed 13 Congressional Review Act resolutions and 30 executive orders since he was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, according to the White House press office. And while it may not be meaningful, Trump is also investing time and effort to have Congress enact 28 laws within the 100-day grading period.

100 days of Donald

EPL week 34 review: Over to you Spurs

The lengthened Week 34 of the English Premier League sees Chelsea beat Southampton at Stamford Bridge to push their margin at the top of the Premier League to seven points with Spurs facing Crystal Place on Wednesday night.

Southampton’s visit to Stamford Bridge was not a match that Mauricio Pochettino would have pinned his Premier League hopes on. And yet it was still a stern test for a Chelsea side that still had the sound of defeats to Crystal Palace and Man Utd ringing in their ears. But what better way to silence the demons than a good old fashioned early goal.

Antonio Conte made a few people spill their Starbucks coffee after reading the line-up for the FA Cup Semi-Final against Spurs. Both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, the two most proficient attacking tools in Chelsea’s toolkit, left on the bench.

But it was an inspired move.
