Fertitta brothers give mom $120m check for Mother’s Day

Those wacky billionaire Fertitta brothers showed up sons everywhere by giving their mom a nine-figure check for Mother’s Day.

Earlier this month, Red Rock Resorts – the manager and majority owner of Las Vegas locals casino operator Station Casinos – released its Q1 earnings report. On the ensuing analyst call, CEO Marc Falcone revealed that the company had paid $120m to a trust controlled by Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta III‘s mother Victoria to acquire the land underneath two Red Rock casino properties in Las Vegas.

A couple decades ago, Victoria and her late husband Frank Fertitta Jr. set up a trust to own 75 acres underneath the Boulder Station and Texas Station casinos. Red Rock has been paying rent on this land to the trust, and Falcone claims the land purchase will save the company roughly $7m per year.

The purchase price is more than twice the $43m that Red Rock rival Boyd Gaming paid for the 77 acres of Vegas dirt under its New Orleans casino earlier this year, suggesting Victoria’s boys took it easy on mom during the negotiations.

Cyprus gov’t expects €100m per year from Melco-Hard Rock casino

The Republic of Cyprus is betting on big financial rewards from its one and only integrated resort casino.

Cypriot Finance Minister Harris Georgiades recently told Cyprus Weekly that the government expects to reap an annual windfall of €100m in tax revenue once the new Melco International-Hard Rock International joint venture resort casino is operating at full capacity. The property, which has yet to start construction, isn’t expected to open its doors to the public until 2020.

Georgiades said the government’s tax take would be only “half the story,” given the indirect benefits the new resort is expected to bring to the overall economy. Georgiades has full confidence that the project will be a smash hit, given that it will be Europe’s largest such resort “in a country which enjoys the best weather in the continent. To me, it sounds like an excellent business proposition.”

Of course, there’s the small matter of the government actually concluding its deal with the Melco-Hard Rock consortium. Georgiades said the parties were still negotiating some of the fine print but that he expects the final contract to be signed ‘imminently.’

LeoVegas Gaming CEO Styren bids goodbye after five years

Swedish mobile gambling operator LeoVegas is bidding farewell to the CEO of its Malta-based subsidiary.

On Tuesday, LeoVegas announced that Johan Styren (pictured), who heads up LeoVegas Gaming Ltd, would be leaving his post on June 30. Styren, who has held the CEO position for the last five years, will remain as director of some LeoVegas divisions for a transitional period, then it’s off into the sunset.

LeoVegas Group CEO Gustaf Hagman praised Styren’s “amazing effort” over the past five years and wished him well in his future endeavors. Styren said he was moving on to face unspecified “new challenges” but looked back fondly at his 2012 arrival at the company, when “we had just launched and we had no customers. Today, we are market leaders.”

Earlier this month, LeoVegas released its Q1 earnings report, which showed revenue rising 49% to €43.9m in the three months ending March 31. The company reported earnings of €6m versus a €1.3m loss in the same period last year, while operating profit came in at €5.5m from a €1.6m loss.

Bwin sponsor Dortmund football; ‘Bwin’ busted in Cambodia

UK-listed online gambling operator GVC Holdings’ marquee betting brand Bwin has inked a pricey sponsorship with German footballers Borussia Dortmund (BVB).

On Wednesday, GVC announced that it had signed on as the newest second-tier ‘Champion Partner’ of Borussia Dortmund. The deal, which spans the next four Bundesliga seasons, is reportedly worth “at least” €3m per season, according to Sponsors.de.

The deal calls for the Bwin logo to enjoy prominent branding opportunities within the team’s Signal Iduna Park stadium, both on LED perimeter banners and via on-pitch ‘CamCarpets’ at each of BVB’s 17 Bundesliga home matches, as well as on the team’s interview backdrops. Bwin will also develop campaigns and promo offers specifically tailored for BVB fans via both online and traditional channels.

Bwin’s regional manager Stephan Heilmann celebrated the betting brand’s Bundesliga return, noting the synergy in the matching colors of the two partners, while BVB’s marketing director Carsten Cramer praised Bwin for maintaining “close ties with German football longer than any other operator in its sector.”

China arrests 203 over bogus online lottery operation

Chinese authorities have arrested over 200 people in connection with an online lottery fraud operation.

On Wednesday, China’s state-run media agency Xinhua reported that police in Shaanxi province had raided three locations earlier this month and detained 203 individuals, of whom over 100 will face criminal charges in connection with their bogus lottery scheme.

The report indicated that the ring operated by contacting players on social networking platforms such as QQ and WeChat with promises of high odds of winning lottery jackpots, then making the pitch to purchase lottery tickets online.

But the lottery tickets were bogus, and a disgruntled customer who lost RMB 45k (US $6,500) to the scammers alerted police in January. The ring, which was in operation since 2015, reportedly generated sales of RMB 100m ($14.5m) before the authorities got wind of their dealings.

2 Coinbase customers join battle to stop IRS bitcoin tax summons

Coinbase has gained two more supporters in its fight to block the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from issuing summons on the bitcoin wallet service.

The California-based bitcoin exchange, if you recall, is embroiled in a legal fight with the IRS after the latter issued an order requiring the exchange to submit records of its customer transactions as part of the tax fraud investigation. Coinbase, however, is challenging the summons on grounds that it’s too broad and might incriminate customers who have done nothing wrong.

The summons prompted law firm Berns Weiss to intervene on behalf of its own managing partner, Jeffrey Berns, who is also a customer of Coinbase. The IRS then asked another federal judge in March to enforce the summons, which Coinbase said it intended to fight. Finally on May 4, Judge Jacqueline Corley ordered the IRS and Coinbase to propose a briefing schedule, according to court records.

This week, Berns Weiss filed a motion seeking to quash the IRS summons. The law firm also submitted new filing on behalf two customers “to insure that Coinbase’s customers are represented in the proceeding and that the Court has the opportunity to consider their perspective.” The two customers sought anonymity in order to prevent the IRS from “attempting to moot Movants’ motion by withdrawing its request that Coinbase provide Movants’ records.”

Audit on Macau’s junkets yields mixed results—so far

Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has started auditing the city’s 126 licensed junket operators as mainland China’s anti-corruption drive continues.

And the results had been mixed so far, according to DICJ director Paulo Martins Chan.

“We had started junket audits during this year,” Chan told reporters at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Asia 2017. “Up to now we did 40 junkets, some of them are good of course, some of them need some improvements so we had told them to improve their accounting system.”

The Chinese territory has seen the number of its licensed VIP gaming promoters drop from 141 last year to 126 in January 2017. Macau authorities previously attributed the year-on-year decline to some junket operators failing to meet the DICJ’s tighter standards for financial accounting, which were imposed following a series of high-profile internal theft incidents that shattered junket investor confidence.
