Crown Resort cutting down debt with proceeds from Macau exit

James Packer’s Crown Resorts is punting on the proceeds from selling its remaining stake in Melco Resorts and Entertainment to help reduce the company’s debt.

If you’re just joining us, the Australian casino operator announced early this week that it had decided to end its decade-long international joint venture operations in Macau. As part of the exit process, Melco launched a public offering of nearly 28 million American depository shares—or about 165 million ordinary shares in Melco—following the Macau casino operator’s repurchase of Crown’s remaining stake in the joint venture, which operates casinos in Chinese territory as well as in the Philippines.

Crown Resorts expects to pocket close to US$1 billion from the sale, the casino company said in a filing to the Australian Securities Exchange.

“Crown Resorts is expected to generate net proceeds of approximately US$987 million or AUD1.34 billion (equivalent to US$5.97 per Melco Resorts ordinary share and US$17.91 per Melco Resorts American depository share) which will initially be used to reduce Crown Resorts’ net debt,” Crown Resorts said.

Bitcoin price crosses $1,700 threshold over talks of blockchain’s ‘potential’

Digital currency bitcoin has surged past $1,700, hitting a new all-time high after Minneapolis Federal Bank President Neel Kashkari mentioned that its underlying blockchain technology has more potential than bitcoin itself.

In a speech at the MN High Tech Association, Kashkari said he “thinks the sentiment has shifted in the markets,” and within the Federal Reserve.

“I would say I think conventional wisdom now is that blockchain and the underlying technology is probably more interesting and has more potential than maybe bitcoin does by itself,” said the Minneapolis Fed Bank president.

Analysts at ABI Research echoed that sentiment, saying that blockchain’s potential as a market beyond cryptocurrency can be analyzed against venture capital funding, which hit $500 million globally in 2016.

Paddy Power Betfair acquires US daily fantasy operator DRAFT

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power Betfair is set to test the U.S. daily fantasy sports market – dominated by fantasy sports giants DraftKings and FanDuel – with the acquisition of a mobile-led product.

Paddy Power announced in a regulatory filing on Wednesday that it acquired an early-stage operator, DRAFT for an initial cash consideration of $19 million.

The fantasy league game, which targets casual players, boasts a mobile-first approach and emphasizes modest stakes. It has raised $4.5 million in venture backing since its founding in 2015, and has 10 employees.

It said the business would continue to be run by co-CEOs Jeremy Levine and Jordan Fliegel and would now have access to the group’s marketing and technology capabilities.

Champions League review: Juventus cruise past Monaco

Juventus is even money to win their first Champions League trophy since 1996 after defeating free-scoring Monaco 4-1 on aggregate after another scintillating display from Dani Alves.

Serie A might be a shoddy claptrap of a league singed by match fixing allegations of the past and a host of teams that wouldn’t challenge Gillingham to a decent game. But that hasn’t stopped Juventus from competing at the very highest level in world football.

The Old Lady reached their second Champions League final in the past three years after putting free-scoring Monaco to bed in Turin last night.

The French league leaders, who have scored more goals (150) than any other team in Europe except Real Madrid (158) and Barcelona (160), were blitzed in a first half dominated by the team who has won Serie A in each of the past five seasons.

Celtics favored at home over Wizards in pivotal game 5 on Wednesday

With the Golden State Warriors sweeping the Utah Jazz on Monday only one NBA playoff game is scheduled for Wednesday, and it is Game 5 between the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards in a series that could very well go the distance.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

The home team has won and covered the spread in each of the first four games, with the Celtics losing the last two at Washington by a combined 46 points.

Boston won the first two games at home by double digits and heads into Game 5 as a 4.5-point favorite. The question is, will bettors finally see a close matchup, or will the blowout trend continue? To be fair, Game 2 was competitive until overtime, when the Celtics pulled away and ended up winning 129-119 behind 53 points from point guard Isaiah Thomas.

Cordish Gaming adds lagoon, beach to Madrid casino pitch

American casino operator Cordish Gaming has submitted a revised proposal to build a massive integrated resort in Madrid after local officials rejected the company’s initial plan.

In late March, the regional government in Madrid informed Cordish of their serious doubts that the company’s proposal to build a €2.2b resort casino project on a parcel of land near Barajas airport was “viable from an economic and organizational point of view.” However, the officials told Cordish there was nothing preventing it filing a revised plan.

Last week, Cordish did just that, submitting a plan that adds a six-hectare (15 acres) artificial lagoon and beach to the project’s first phase. The lagoon will allow guests to windsurf, kayak, play beach volleyball and pick sand from their crotches for the rest of the day. Lagoon access would be free for resorts guests, but non-guests could access the water for a fee.

Part of the reason why the initial proposal was rejected was the lack of sports and cultural facilities included in the first phase of development. Those facilities are necessary for the project to be designated an Integrated Development Center (CID), a status that confers both tax advantages and flexibility in land usage.

Sam Ravazi shares his views on India’s Poker Sport’s League

Lee Davy reaches out to Sam Razavi to learn more about the forthcoming Poker Sports League in India, and wonders whether we will see more leagues springing up in the near future?

When Alex Dreyfus decided to change the face of poker by creating the Global Poker League (GPL) I thought that was the end of that. I assumed the greatest players in the world would sign up to play, and its success would help elevate the game to the fringes of popularity currently experienced by esports athletes.

I never expected someone else to take a cookie cutter to his process, but that’s what has happened after India’s Poker Sports League (PSL) held their Season 1 draft on the weekend.

As I wrote yesterday, India has a proven track record when it comes to turning something mundane into something magical. It revolutionised the world of cricket through the Indian Premier League (IPL), and who is to say they won’t be able to do the same with poker?
