EU top court slams Hungary’s restrictive online gambling laws

Hungary’s restrictive online gambling rules preclude the country from taking enforcement action against online gambling operators licensed by other European Union countries, according to the EU’s top court.

In a ruling handed down on Thursday, the Court of Justice for the European Union (CJEU) ruled that Hungary’s new online gambling regime had unlawfully excluded EU-licensed operators from the country’s licensing process. The case had been brought by the Kindred Group’s Malta-licensed Unibet brand.

In 2014, Hungary proposed allowing the nation’s brick-and-mortar casino operators to apply for online casino and poker licenses, while online sports betting would be restricted to the state-run Szerencsejáték Zrt betting monopoly. International operators protested that the proposed rules were (a) biased in favor of domestic operators, and (b) confusingly written, perhaps intentionally so.

Hungary originally failed to issue a public call for an open tender for online applicants, while also requiring would-be online licensees to have previously obtained classification as ‘trustworthy’ operators of games of chance. Trustworthy, in this case, was defined as having operated games of chance in Hungary for a minimum period of 10 years.

Football Association scraps Ladbrokes betting partnership

The English Football Association (FA) has scrapped its sponsorship deal with UK bookmakers Ladbrokes and says it will forego any future tie-ups with betting operators.

One year ago, the FA announced that it had reached a “long term agreement” that would see Ladbrokes serve as the league’s official betting partner. The four-year deal was reportedly worth £4m per year. But last month saw the FA announce that it was reviewing whether deals with betting operators were appropriate relationships for a sport-governing body.

On Thursday, the FA announced that its board had reached a mutual agreement with Ladbrokes to terminate their relationship three years ahead of schedule. The FA also said it would “end all sponsorships with betting companies starting from the end of the 2016-17 season.” However, the FA will continue to work with betting operators to monitor suspicious betting activity to ensure the integrity of the FA product.

Ladbrokes Coral CEO Jim Mullen said his group understood the FA’s position regarding their commercial partnerships with gambling, while FA CEO Martin Glenn thanked Ladbrokes for being “a valued partner” and for displaying “professionalism and understanding” regarding the FA’s decision.

Malaysia’s Choong Kian Weng crushes the heads up round to capture the Main Event title

Macau, China, June 21, 2017 – Malaysia’s Choong Kian Weng, without a doubt the most active player at the Final 8 of the APT Main Event, took his stack all the way to the heads up round then crushed Vietnam’s Dang Van Hien to seize the HKD 521,000 first place purse, the APT Championship Trophy, and the exclusive APT Championship Ring.

Weng’s road to victory

Choong Kian Weng’s quest for the title began all the way back in Day 1A where he topped the 44 player field to enter Day 2 running second-in-chips to Day 1B chip leader, China’s Yang Song. By the end of Day 2, Song was nowhere to be found while Weng ruled the charts with a stack that dwarfed all others. In Day 3, he helped trim the field by eliminating two players, Wang Ye (11th) and Weiyi Zhang (15th) then secured his seat to the Final 8.

Getting to the finish line wasn’t exactly a breeze for Weng. The Final 8 players all wanted the glory that it took over two hours before the first casualty was delivered. Germany’s Kilian Loeffler, who happened to be the Final 8 entering chip leader, fell with K♥ K♠ running right into Dang Van Hien’s A♦ A♣. Not long after, Dang also eliminated China’s Xu Dong Hui in 7th place to take a commanding chip lead which he brought all the way to the final heads up round.

Philly casino project needs a second look, Pennsylvania regulator told

The construction of a hotel and casino complex in South Philadelphia has hit another snag after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court (SC) ordered the state regulators to take another look at Stadium LLC’s project.

In a unanimous vote, the seven-member High Tribunal pointed out that the state Gaming Control Board failed to sufficiently examine whether the Philly casino project breached the state rules limiting investor ownership in multiple casinos.

According to The Associated Press, this is the second time in 15 months that the SC tossed the issue back to the casino regulators. It further said that the ruling will also cause the Stadium project further delays.

The Gaming Control Board gave a brief comment saying that it “appreciates the work of the court in producing this decision and is reviewing to determine the next steps in this matter.”
