Travellers International bleeds $95.41M after Resorts World Manila attack

Philippine-listed casino operator Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. continues to bear brunt of last Friday’s casino rampage, bleeding an estimated $95.41 million in market capitalization over the past two trading days.

Data from the Philippine Stock Exchange shows that the casino operator’s market capitalization plunged 8.8 percent to $ 986.07 million from P53.569 billion (US$1.08 billion) as a result of Friday’s aftermath, that left 37 people, including the armed man, dead.

From $0.07 on Thursday, shares of Travellers is now down to $0.06.

“It’s because of what happened to Resorts World last Friday, past 12 midnight,” Aniceto K. Pangan, equities trader at Diversified Securities Inc. told GMA News Online.

Bitcoin marches past $2,900 to flirt with new all-time high

Bitcoin’s steady stream of good news continues this week.

Despite not having any real catalyst, the digital currency is advancing towards record territory. Data from CoinDesk’s Bitcoin Price Index (BPI) showed that bitcoin’s market average has already hit $2,911.86 during early Tuesday morning’s trading, surpassing the all-time high of $2,760.10 recorded in late May.

The price of the cryptocurrency also hit a high of $2,929.38 on the CEX.IO exchange. Bitcoin’s trading price on Bitstamp reached a high of $2,877.47—lower than the other two exchanges but still well above the digital currency’s best record in May.

Bitcoin’s rally appears to be a continuation of the gains that developed last week, when China’s Big 3 exchanges—OKCoin, Huobi and BTCC—resumed cryptocurrency withdrawals on their respective platforms.

After being called pigeon, Doug Polk has responded in the best way possible by winning the $111,111 One Drop High Roller for $3,686,865.

The YouTube sensation defeated an in-form Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier in heads-up competition to take home what will rank as one of the biggest purses of 2017.

Travellers Int’l Hotel Group & the morality of buying tragedy

A gunman walks into a resort and kills 36 people. Unfortunately it’s not a joke. ISIS claims responsibility, though the man, Jessie Javier Carlos, was a government tax man gambling addict $81,000 in debt. He was fired from his job for, get this, not paying taxes. Nevermind that this brings into question every ISIS claim of responsibility for anything. The group is really a bogey man that media can point to in order to get the scared masses glued to news broadcasts so they can charge more for ads. The morality of this sort of journalism, reporting on claims of responsibility for murder without verifying the claim, is rarely questioned, if the group it is pinned on is public enemy #1.

Let’s address a few controversial issues. First, how to prevent these incidents from happening. Second, the morality of buying the dip in Travellers International Hotel Group (RWM) and seemingly profiting off of mass murder.

No doubt anti-gambling moralists are going to blame gambling for this crime and push for more laws against it, much like UK Prime Minister Theresa May is using the recent London attack to push for global government control over the internet. But driving gambling into the underground economy is likely to cost more lives than it saves. A much more reasonable way to prevent mass shootings like this from happening in the future is to put resorts in charge of their own security and liable for damages in the event of a breach. A second option is to relax gun laws and allow responsible gun owners to carry their firearms, which Philippines Republic Act 10591 passed in 2014 makes it very difficult to do for the average nonviolent Filipino, but very easy for violent crazed people to ignore, as happened here. If you’re planning to go out in a blaze, Republic Act 10591 isn’t going to stop you. It’s just going to make it easier for criminals to kill unarmed people.

As for the second question, is it moral to buy the dip in RWM stock? Let’s do a value-free thought experiment to try to answer that question. Let’s assume it is totally immoral to buy RWM shares within, say, two weeks of the mass shooting, and let’s say everyone in the Philippines is moral and follows this moral code voluntarily. What happens to RWM shares then? They fall to near zero as no buyer is willing to match sell orders and the company and its customers and investors all suffer even more. The better question is, Is it moral to sell RWM shares on the news of an attack? Well, if that’s immoral and everyone is moral then shares skyrocket as nobody sells and buy orders come in as a show of support or what have you. That could be even worse as companies may start benefiting off mass shootings because it would cause their equity to spike higher, in the event that it is perceived that selling shares on tragedy is immoral.

Kentucky Downs and EquiLottery enter broadcast rights agreement

Louisville, KY (Monday, June 2017) – EquiLottery and Ellis Park have entered into a broadcast rights agreement that will allow races from the Henderson, Kentucky racetrack to be utilized in conjunction with EquiLottery’s lottery game based on the results of live horse racing. This agreement marks the second such arrangement with a Kentucky racetrack and comes on the heels of a recent endorsement of the product from the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA).

“I was first approached about this product six years ago when it was in a very early development stage,” said Ellis Park Owner and President Ron Geary. “As someone who has had business startup success, it’s exciting when you get to watch another entrepreneur take a seedling of an idea and turn it into a real, workable product, especially in your home state. Ellis Park is proud to stand with Brad Cummings and the entire EquiLottery team and we look forward to watching this exciting opportunity for horse racing come to fruition. With this product, we see nothing but upside for the racing industry in Kentucky and beyond.”

Ellis Park joins in-state racetrack Kentucky Downs along with Penn National’s Charles Town Races and Eldorado Resorts’ Mountaineer Park in West Virginia as early adopters of EquiLottery. As with other such agreements, Ellis Park will make their daily race video available for streaming through the EquiLottery mobile app in exchange for a broadcast rights fee. This fee will be split between the racetrack and purse funds.

“It’s a real pleasure to be working with Ron and his team at Ellis Park,” said EquiLottery Founder and CEO Brad Cummings. “When starting a business in Kentucky, you quickly become aware of what Ron has done to help build successful businesses and create good-paying jobs in this state. So to have his backing as we build out the vision for EquiLottery is a great honor. Every day our momentum gets stronger and we get closer to delivering a product we believe will do great things for the sport of horse racing while being able to send more Kentucky students to Kentucky universities through a bevy of successful in-state scholarship programs.”

Philippines could cap number of online gambling licenses at 50

The Philippines may cap the number of its new online gambling licenses at 50 until it can determine whether there is enough demand to meet the supply.

On Monday, a Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) exec said the regulator intends to limit the number of available Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) licenses pending an audit to determine whether licensed operators are growing the pie or cannibalizing each other’s revenue.

PAGCOR announced its POGO licensing program last year as a way to exert greater control over the industry. A total of 42 POGO licenses have been issued to date, and while PAGCOR recently stated that a further 44 applications were pending, that number has since shrunk to 12 – four of which may not make the cut.

Jose S. Tria Jr., assistant VP of PAGCOR’s Offshore Gaming Licensing Department, told reporters that he couldn’t offer a specific timeline for when the POGO license moratorium could take effect because PAGCOR’s automatic auditing system for POGO licensees’ revenue likely won’t be installed until September.

WSOP Review: Wins for Zamani & Mitchell; ElkY leads One Drop final table

Another World Series of Poker review including bracelet wins for Benjamin Zamani and Joseph Mitchell. Meanwhile, Bertrand “ElkY’ Grospellier leads the final table in the One Drop High Roller.

Benjamin Zamani and his rail were able to break out the frozen daiquiris after the World Poker Tour (WPT) Player of the Year (POY) had ensured he was the architect of a successful run for gold in Event #4: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better.

Zamani won the Season XV WPT POY award for his sheer consistency, but he never nailed down a title, making this bracelet win all the more satisfying.

The Floridian finished runner-up in the WPT Legends of Poker Main Event, the Main Event in WPT Choctaw, and the Season XIV WPT bestbet Bounty Scramble.

Sportium extend La Liga betting partnership another two years

Spanish sports betting operator Sportium has further extended its long-running sponsorship of the country’s top football league.

Late last week, Sportium announced that it had extended its official betting partnership with La Liga for another two years. Sportium, the joint venture of local gaming operator Cirsa and UK bookmakers Ladbrokes, originally signed on with La Liga in 2014 and the new pact will extend their relationship through the 2018-19 season.

Sportium CEO Alberto Eljarrat said the relationship with La Liga “has been a success from the start,” with the operator enjoying “great exposure” for its brand. La Liga president Javier Tebas was equally chuffed, saying the parties had forged “close ties” over their three-years-and-counting partnership, so why not keep things in the family?

Sportium clearly values its Spanish sports connection, having last year added a multi-year betting partnership with the country’s top basketball league, the Liga Endesa. Terms of the La Liga extension weren’t disclosed, but Eljarrat said the Spanish bookmaking market was “a very competitive sector” and Sportium hadn’t been the only company looking to enjoy some primo La Liga exposure, so one can assume it didn’t come cheaply.

Filatov wins partypoker Million Germany HR; Romanello ties the knot

Partypoker Ambassador, Anatoly “nl_profit” Filatov, wins the partypoker Million Germany High Roller, and fellow ambassador Roberto Romanello will arrive late at the World Series of Poker after tying the knot in Italy.

In March, partypoker hired the considerable talents of Anatoly ‘nl_profit’ Filatov to attract players from Siberia to Serbia, and it hasn’t taken him long to bag a title.

Filatov was representing the brand at partypoker Million Germany when he won the €2,200 buy-in High Roller after a three-way chop with Andrew Haneberg and Aleksandar Tomovic. Filatov won the title and the €42,000 first prize when his T9 out flopped the pocket treys of his opponent.

The event attracted 100 entrants ensuring it matched the €200,000 Guarantee by the cent. The event was so popular the organisers had to open up an impromptu Day 3. The King’s Casino, Rozvadov, in the Czech Republic played host.

Lee Davy catches up with 888Poker Ambassador Bruno Politano at 888Live Barcelona to talk about his coaching business in Brazil, the importance of mindset, and the role spirituality has had in his life.

I will always remember the sight of Falcao in 82; arms outstretched; veins trying to reach the moon, mouth wide open like some yuppie who has been snowballing coke all night.

It’s the one defining memory I have of Brazil.

And that’s what I’m thinking about as I take a sip from my green juice, quietly observing the Brazilian 888Poker Ambassadors like a pack of wolves at the opening night party as part of 888Live Barcelona.

Las Vegas Sands launch $1m anti-VGT campaign in Pennsylvania

Casino operator Las Vegas Sands has mounted a public relations campaign against a proposal to allow video gaming terminals (VGT) in Pennsylvania bars and clubs.

The Allentown Morning Call reported that Sands has allocated over $1m to fund an astroturf group it’s calling Pennsylvanians For Responsible Government (PFRG) to fight the proposed House Bill 1010, which would allow thousands of the state’s pubs, clubs and other small venues to add up to five VGTs apiece.

The Sands-sponsored group has launched a website at 12000pacasinos.com to educate Pennsylvanians of legislators’ plan ‘to put blackjack and poker machines in delis, restaurants, bars, pizza shops and social clubs. Even nursing homes!” The site comes with a handy interactive map to show just how close to residents’ “schools, churches and playgrounds” these new mini-casinos will be located.

In addition to the website, PFRG plans to launch radio and television commercials (viewable below) to ensure maximum awareness of HB1010, which PFRG claims will reduce not only real brick-and-mortar casino revenue but jeopardize the jobs of thousands of casino employees.
