Political pressure increases to cut FOBT stake

The Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT) All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), has staged a photo opportunity at Portcullis House with MPs drawn from across the political spectrum invited to show their support for the ‘Cut the stake. Reduce FOBT Harm’ campaign. MPs were invited to have their photographs taken alongside posters which have been designed to demonstrate the continued cross party political will for a lowering of the stake. One of the branded backdrops represented the amounts lost on FOBTs by geographical region, with London featuring a loss of £497m in 2015/16. Images and content from the photo shoot are being used through social and regional media to continue the political momentum as parliament enters summer recess.

John White, bacta Chief Executive, believes the latest initiative from the All Party Parliamentary Group underlines the level of cross party support which exists to cut the FOBT stake. He said: “Bacta is an associate member of the All Party Parliamentary Group, alongside supporting organisations representing bingo, pub, adult gaming centres, coastal amusements, councils and the Royal Society for Public Health – all of which share concerns about the social implications of FOBTs. It’s essential that this issue remains firmly on the radar and that government recognises there is deeply held cross party support for a significant reduction in the FOBT stake.”

In January the APPG published a Parliamentary Report into Fixed Odds Betting Terminals based on the findings of a six month inquiry which took evidence from, among others, academics, problem gamblers, campaign groups, local authorities, industry experts, Gambling Minister Tracey Crouch, Sarah Harrison, Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission, Chris Kelly, Chair of the Responsible Strategy Gambling Board, Kate Lampard, Chair of Gamble Aware.

Commenting at the launch of the report, APPG Chair Carolyn Harris MP said: “There is now a clear case for the Government to substantially reduce the maximum stake which can be played on FOBTs. The time for prevaricating is over. These machines are easily accessed in the most deprived areas, sucking money out of the pockets of families. I support a responsible gambling industry, but there is nothing responsible about how FOBTs are currently being operated. I urge the Government to take action now.”

Roger Goodell clams up when colleagues’ talk turns to gambling

When the leaders of U.S. professional sports leagues convened in New York to discuss the business of sports, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had been an active, insightful participant. Until the topic of gambling came up.

On Tuesday night, Goodell joined NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred at The Paley Center for Media-organized public forum, titled “GameChangers: Creating the Future of Sports.”

The one-hour forum touched on different topics, including gambling, particularly in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to consider New Jersey’s request for legal sports betting. Silver, a proponent of legalizing sports gambling in the country, is optimistic that there will be changes in the not-so-distant future.

“My sense is that the law will change in the next few years in the United States,” the NBA commissioner said. “And I think it’s not as much at the end of the day are leagues being for or against sports betting? It’s more a function of being realists. It’s a multi-hundred-billion-dollar illegal industry in United States. And I think ultimately as the owners of the intellectual property, we’re going to embrace it and also make sure our integrity is protected at the same time.”

Bitcoin Unlimited gains technical support in battle for on-chain scaling

To support Bitcoin Unlimited’s (BU) vision of a scaled network, bitcoin technology and development outfit nChain has announced that it will provide technical support for the BU client software.

If you’re just joining us, bitcoin is now at a critical juncture, and its community is becoming highly polarized with different parties proposing to scale in different ways. Among these proposals is Segregated Witness, or SegWit2x, whose main goal is to send signature data or witnesses off-chain onto second layers like the Lightning Network or sidechains to fit more transactions into the current 1MB block size.

This solution, however, merely defers the capacity problem, whereas Bitcoin Unlimited seeks to enable larger blocks and achieve significant on-chain scaling of the bitcoin network. Bitcoin Unlimited believes that increased scalability via larger blocks will pave the way for faster transactions and enterprise-level capabilities.

And so to solve bitcoin’s current capacity problem, Bitcoin Unlimited rolled out a client software designed for larger blocks, which nChain will build on to address the needs of bitcoin miners.

Becky’s Affiliated: A call for Corporate Social Responsibility, inspiration from our gambling industry peers

As we travel to conference after gambling conference, we mostly focus on increasing revenue, the latest products, how to acquire and retain customers, M&As and so on.  At WGES 2017, I was refreshed as I listened to an inspiring presentation led by Jan Jones, EVP of Public Policy and Corporate Responsibility for Caesars Entertainment.  Her speech was focused on the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and why gambling companies and the gambling industry as a whole should be doing more to give back to society.

Jones pointed out how the public views the gambling industry as “bad” and expects us to do harm.  She emphasized the importance of making CSR a core part of our organizations, led by senior management.  She said by implementing solid CSR strategies, organizations become an employer of choice, regulators become friends not foes, investors take notice and public perception improves.

Not to mention as human beings, doing good feels good and brings happiness to others.

I was also refreshed at WGES during my interview with Mr. Green’s CEO, Jesper Karrbrink (to be released here at CalvinAyre.com on Wednesday, July 26th), when I realized the number one topic he wanted to discuss was his company’s CSR initiatives as opposed to the suite of products Mr. Green has to offer.

Sports betting industry’s ‘most comprehensive agenda’ at Betting on Sports

SBC Events has launched what it believes is the most comprehensive conference agenda the sports betting industry has ever seen for Betting on Sports 2017 (12-15 September).

Featuring 42 sessions across Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 September, #boscon2017 will present over 150 experts from both the betting and sporting arenas, spanning three conference rooms at the Olympia Conference Centre in Kensington, West London.

The newest addition to the agenda is a track dedicated to data and its uses both in trading and marketing, which includes insight from BetGenius Business Development Director Matt Stephenson on how live data is pushing back the boundaries for in-play betting.

One of eight tracks running as simultaneous blocks of three, ‘Betting on Data’ will also touch upon the integrity of data, the future role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and the improved adoption of customer data.

AGS’ OrionSM premium cabinet formally launches, surpasses performance and sales expectations

LAS VEGAS, July 2017 – In May 2017, AGS (“the Company”) officially released its new, award-winning premium slot machine cabinet, OrionSM. Just a few short months later, Orion has already surpassed performance and sales expectations with more than 350 units currently installed and nearly 700 more installations scheduled. This success is fueled by Orion’s performance during field trials and the growing popularity of the Company’s core cabinet, ICON™, which was released last year.

“In just over 60 days, we’ve signed agreements for more than 1,000 Orion units and we couldn’t be more energized about its performance and momentum,” said David Lopez, President and CEO of AGS. “Orion’s success speaks to our obsession with getting the details right with new hardware and creating games gamblers love to play.”

Since field trials began in August 2016, Orion’s first featured games, Fu Nan Fu Nu™ and River Dragons®, have been consistently performing at multiples above house average. “Even after 11 months, Orion’s Fu Nan Fu Nu is still doing 5X house average,” said Skyelar Perkins, Senior Director of Slot Operations at Choctaw Casinos & Resorts in Oklahoma; their Durant property was the first casino to trial the cabinet.

What sets Orion apart is its performance, flexibility, and style. Philippine police bust kidnappers preying on casino high-rollers

Authorities in the Philippines have disrupted a major kidnapping gang that was abducting high-rolling gamblers from Manila casinos.

On Thursday, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) had detained 45 foreigners suspected of operating a kidnapping ring responsible for a string of abductions of international tourists from local casinos in recent months.

On Tuesday, the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit and the PNP’s Anti-Kidnapping Group conducted raids that resulted in the detention of 26 foreigners suspected of involvement in the kidnapping ring. A follow-up raid netted a further 19 suspects, none of whom were willing to identify themselves or able to show legal immigration documents.

In the course of the original raids, the authorities freed a Singaporean woman identified as Wu Yan, who said she’d been forcibly abducted while visiting the Solaire Resort and Casino in Manila. Wu said her four kidnappers – three men and one woman – took her to a room at the Bayview International Towers, where she was beaten and threatened with worse if she didn’t give them P9m (US $180k).

Poker Central create Poker Masters High Roller Tournament Series

Poker Central is set to add more top quality content to their PokerGO subscription service after unveiling plans to host the Poker Masters High Roller Tournament Series in the ARIA.

What has happened at Poker Central?

The one-time 24-hour poker TV channel, which offered a library of old and hackneyed poker footage, is fast becoming one of the digital media innovators of our industry.

The Super High Roller bowl was always the beating heart of the channel. Pristine production of the very best poker players in the game competing for obscene amounts of money = check.

Goa’s CM says casinos boost the economy, don’t raise crime rates

Goa’s chief minister is defending the Indian state’s floating casino operations as a boon for the local economy even as he blames the opposition party for authorizing casinos in the first place.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar (pictured) fielded opposition legislators’ questions on the always controversial topic of the state’s ‘offshore’ casinos. In addition to the six casinos currently floating on the Mandovi river, there are around 10 land-based casinos operating out of local hotels.

In a written reply to a Congress party MLA’s question regarding what effect these casinos may have had on local crime, Parrikar cited data showing that the state’s crime rate had fallen for three consecutive years, from 4,467 cases in 2014 to 2,693 in 2016.

Over the same period, Parrikar noted that the state’s share of casino revenue had more than doubled, from Rs 78.6 crore (US $12.2m) in fiscal 2014-15, rising to Rs 86 crore in 2015-16, then soaring to Rs 162 crore ($25.2m) in 2016-17.

Does poker need the moral police?

After Chris Ferguson finished atop of the World Series of Poker Player of the Year leaderboard with the World Series of Poker Europe to come, Lee Davy, wants the poker world to consider creating the moral police.

The Global Poker Index (GPI) stat-man Eric Danis stands below a large drape of Mike Gorodinsky, the 2015 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Player of the Year. The media creates a human enclave, cameras and pens poised to record the moment for those not lucky to have made the trip to the greatest poker tournament in the world.

Gorodinsky is also in the crowd, much smaller than I imagined, and looking more like a man suffering delirium tremens than a coolness personified professional poker player.

After Danis releases his glowing tribute to the masses, he invites Gorodinsky to take the podium to begin Day 1c of the 2016 WSOP Main Event. I can’t think of a greater bastion to open the game than the man who proved to be the best of the best 12-months before.

Lawyer accuses WSOPC record holder of reneging on backing deal

A lawyer from Tallahassee is suing the 10-time World Series of Poker Circuit gold ring winner, Maurice Hawkins, over a backing deal allegedly gone south.

The most decorated poker player in World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) history, and recent American Poker Award winner for Breakout Performance of the Year, Maurice Hawkins, is being sued by a Tallahassee attorney, over an alleged staking deal gone sour.

The news emerged in FloridaPolitics.com, where Lewis, a partner at Fonvielle Lewis Messer & McConnaughhay personal injury law firm, filed a lawsuit in Leon County, Florida claiming that Hawkins broke off their staking deal and had not returned $22,788 in unused backing money.

According to the article, Lewis met Hawkins while playing in a tournament in Jacksonville last March. In a thread on the 2+2 poker forum, Lewis said that Hawkins offered him poker tips before eventually asking him to stake him in tournaments. Lewis agreed to a 50/50 deal and wired the money to Hawkins’s wife.

The WSOP breach 120k entrant mark in another record-breaking year

The 48th Annual World Series of Poker was another record-breaking year, including most number of entrants, largest Main Event starting flight, and more ITM finishes than ever before.

The number crunchers have finally emerged from their underground bunker. We have the results. The 48th Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) was another record-breaker.

The 48th annual event sucked 120,995 entrants through the Rio doors, meaning the most prestigious poker tournament series of them all trekked into the 120,000 entrant mark for the first time, up 12.2% from last year’s record-breaking numbers.

With the Colossus numbers dropping on an annual basis, the WSOP has to continually come up with new tricks to retain the record-breaking momentum, and this year it was the $365 buy-in GIANT that made all the difference dragging in 10,015 entrants.
