Uruguay pol peeved at Sportingbet football sponsorship

Online sports betting operator Sportingbet is in hot water in Uruguay after a politician objected to the team’s logo appearing on the jersey of a local football institution.

Uruguay keeps a pretty tight lid on its gambling market, with local punters’ legal options limited to a state-run lottery, pari-mutuel race betting and some brick-and-mortar casinos. Sports betting is frowned upon, and online sports betting is downright scowled at in this small nation of only around 3.5m people.

The combination of a small market and a hostile reception hasn’t stopped any number of internationally licensed online gambling sites from serving Uruguyan punters, or even from inking sponsorship opportunities with local sports teams.

Case in point, GVC Holdings’ Sportingbet brand, whose logo appeared on the shirt fronts of Uruguayan football mainstays Club Nacional de Football during a recent Copa Libertadores match against Brazilian side Botafogo.

Google Play to allow real-money Android gambling, betting apps

Google’s Android app store is finally relaxing its longstanding ban on gambling and betting apps, according to reports on a UK tech site.

Google’s Android operating system is by far the planet’s dominant mobile platform, but unlike rival Apple’s iOS, the Google Play marketplace had until now wanted nothing to do with real-money gambling, leaving Android users with no option but to download apps direct from gambling sites, which limited the apps’ potential exposure to new customers, as well as developers’ ability to push updates.

On Tuesday, UK-based digital agency Degree53 – whose clients include Betfred, 888 Holdings and OddsChecker – reported that Google had been emailing gambling operators to alert them that they needed to prepare for an imminent seismic shift in Google Play’s gambling policy.

According to Degree53’s Andrew Daniels, Google is informing gaming firms that “beginning of August 2017, Google will accept applications for the distribution of gambling apps within the Play store in the United Kingdom, France and the Republic of Ireland. At a later date, this policy change may be expanded to new regions and countries.“

Japan proposes cutting pachinko payouts in half

Japan’s struggling pachinko industry is reeling from fresh rumors that players’ current maximum allowable winnings will be cut in half.

Shares in Japan’s pachinko operators took a tumble this week after local media reported that the government planned to impose further reductions in player payouts. A report in the Japan Times suggested the National Police Agency (NPA) plans to cap the maximum pachinko profit for an average four-hour playing span from the current ¥100k (US $877) to below ¥50k.

The NPA is reportedly preparing to issue a draft of new regulations for entertainment businesses that will be subject to public comment prior to being formalized. The draft proposes lowering the number of pachinko balls that can be won over a four-hour span by about one-third, while the maximum number of balls generated by a jackpot would be reduced from 2,400 to 1,500.

The NPA also wants pachinko parlor managers to train employees on how to recognize signs of problem gambling behavior and how to talk to customers regarding activity that appears to be problematic.

Taiwan seizes $380k from men returning from Macau casinos

Taiwanese customs officers have seized nearly $400k in cash from two gamblers on their way back from Macau casinos with someone else’s alleged winnings.

Last Saturday, authorities at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport detained two Taiwanese nationals – identified only by their surnames Chiang and Chen – who arrived on a flight from Macau. The twenty-something men were questioned after customs officials found $200k in undeclared cash in each man’s suitcase.

According to the Taipei Times, Chiang and Chen claimed they’d been approached in Macau by another Taiwanese man who claimed to have won big at the casino gaming tables. The man asked Chiang and Chen if they’d help him transport some of his windfall back to Taiwan, because, you know, there’s only so much room in a suitcase and too much cash means you might have to leave some old sweat socks or dirty underwear behind, so really, why wouldn’t you ask two total strangers to help carry all that pretty green?

Anyway, despite police questioning, Chiang and Chen declined to identify their overly trusting compatriot, nor were the pair willing to reveal what compensation (if any) they were to have received for doing this favor for their unidentified buddy. Police responded by launching an investigation into the source of the cash, which they suspect may be linked to a money-laundering scheme.

Fresh ordinance now bans betting on all games of skill in Telangana

The government of Telangana has come up with a new ordinance against online gambling, even though the state’s High Court is still deliberating its previous gaming decree.

Over the weekend, the Telangana Cabinet issued the fresh decree amending the Telangana State Gaming (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017, which was issued several weeks ago, GLaws. In reported.

The Telangana State Gaming (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 added new definition of “cyber space” in the gaming legislation, making betting and gambling through the internet illegal, which means that playing online matka, sports betting, poker and rummy in the state will now incur criminal penalties.

The new ordinance added the words “online gaming with stakes” to the definition of gaming as well as the general description of the term “gaming,” which now states “that any act of risking money or otherwise on the result of an unknown event including on a game of skill falls within the definition of betting and wagering,” according to the report.

Tech Start-up aims to lure millennials to play lottery

There may be more millennials walking in the face of the Earth at present but only a few of them are playing lottery.

This is the stark reality that technology start-up AutoLotto has to face as only one-third of people aged 20 to 35 bought lottery ticket last year. While lotteries racked up $80 billion in sales last, the numbers are declining.

CNBC reported that AutoLotto is attempting to lure millennials in playing lottery through their app which allows users to buy tickets from their smartphone. The app, according to the report, also lets users scan a paper ticket purchased in-store to track it, and get notifications if they win.

So far, the effort of AutoLotto has reaped the company positive results. It said that 57 percent of their user base are now millennials.
