eSportsPools secures world’s first licence for virtual goods betting

Specialist eSports fantasy league and betting site eSportsPools (ESP.bet) has announced it has secured the first licence in the world to specifically cover gambling with virtual goods.

The eSports fantasy leagues, sports betting and casino offerings of ESP.bet are now licensed by the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC), one of the world’s premier regulators of online gambling. The licence is the first to be granted under revised rules, in which the GSC regulates the betting of virtual goods, and the first to have these goods approved as part of the business plan in a licence submission. ESP.bet will be running these licensed real-money and virtual-goods games from its primary domain, with esportspools.com remaining as a free-to-play site.

The new Isle of Man licence solidifies the company’s leading position in this burgeoning industry. The site was one of the first to offer eSports fantasy leagues and has since beaten several major competitors to take the top spot in that market, as well as making the move into eSports betting. Having just closed another funding round aimed at continued growth, it is backed by some of the most respected investors in the sector, including BITKRAFT Esports Ventures, Firestartr, Charlotte Street Capital, Vancouver Founder Fund and several experienced eSports and gambling executives.

CEO Scott Burton explained why the licence is so important for the company’s place in the industry, saying, “To date, eSports betting and the gambling of virtual goods has largely been a grey market, with a lot of unregulated operators failing to protect their customers. We’ve always taken a more transparent approach, undertaking ‘know your customer’ checks to verify age and running a really clear game system. With this licence, that work has been validated and I feel like we have taken the first step towards building a regulated market place that is safe for consumers, businesses, and investors.”

Raising for Effective Giving: poker players raise $686k in H1-2017

Poker players from all over the world have come together to raise close to $700,000 for charities hell-bent on reducing suffering in the world, now, and in the future.

In a few hours time, I will hop on a bird, destined for San Francisco to spend three days at the Effective Altruism Global Summit.

For me, the concept of ‘service’ came into my life when I quit alcohol, but it wasn’t until Philip Gruissem’s touching story of turning poker into a way to reduce suffering, that I began to sit up and philosophise about how I could make a difference.

Like so many in the poker industry, I joined Raising For Effective Giving (REG) as my charity hobby horse of choice. It continues to be a fun ride as I learn so many things about humanity; the way it ticks, and the vast difference in the way Homo Sapiens live on this earth.

Worldpay predicts biggest-ever Premier League boost for Britain’s bookies

August 2017 – London — As the Premier League celebrates its 25th anniversary, Britain’s bookmakers will have their own reason to rejoice, with Worldpay predicting the biggest-ever opening weekend for online betting.

Compared to the previous weekend, which marked the start of the rest of the English Football League, the 2016/17 Premiership opening weekend saw a 12%[1] increase in the volume of bets placed. The average spend per deposit also increased by 5%[2], indicating that the high-profile Premiership matches attract more big-ticket betting than the lower leagues. As the 2017/18 Premier League season kicks off this weekend, Britain’s online bookies will be reminded of how lucrative the league can be, with more bets expected to be placed than ever before.

An analysis of Worldpay’s data has revealed a significant rise in the popularity of online betting over the past two seasons, with the number of transactions rising by 15%[3] in 2015/2016 relative to the previous season, and by an additional 19%[4] in 2016/2017.

James McGurn, VP Growth – Digital Content and Gaming, Global eCom at Worldpay said: “Since the formation of the Premier League 25 years ago, technology has transformed the way football fans experience the sport. The emergence of online and mobile gambling is making it more convenient than ever for punters to have a flutter, from the comfort of their own sofas or in the stadium itself.

Calling the Clock: Australians screwed; 888Poker harsh line; and more

In this week’s poker news round up, we remind you that online poker is dead in Australia, 888Poker has begun banning players who use artificial intelligence leaving players confused and angry, and so much more.

We’ll begin in the land of the duck-billed platypus, kookaburra, and politicians who want to play Mummy and Daddy.

I am, of course, talking about Australia.

This week, the hearts and hopes of Australian poker players were squeezed through that old washing device of the 20s, hung out to dry, and then carried off into the sky by a seagull before being dropped face first into a car park.

Australian online poker market in ruins after new bill passes Senate

Australian online poker players have woken up to the news that their ability to play the game they love, in the form they know it, will end within the next 30-days after the Senate passed a bill into law that will send their providers scurrying to their offshore servers.

It’s bad but not unexpected news.

Australians who rely on online poker to pay the bills, and millions who play the game as a form of entertainment, are forced to make different choices, after the Senate passed The Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016 into law on August 9.

With online poker an ant in the stampede of online gambling games scurrying around trying to avoid being stamped on by the Australian government, the news is not a surprise. What is shocking, is the decision to rubber-stamp the bill came days after the Environment, and Communications References Committee, sat down with the Australian Online Poker Alliance (AOPA), some professional poker players, and industry experts, in an attempt to separate online poker from the ensuing madness.

Kindred’s Nataly Sopacuaperu on the European Open; added value, & more

Lee Davy sits down with the Kindred Group’s Head of Events & Sponsorship, Nataly Sopacuaperu, to talk about the European Open, what makes the Unibet Open such a beloved brand, and much more.

Sometimes it’s better to watch from the sidelines as the giants beat the crap out of each other, and then when nostrils start to flare, legs wobble, and lungs can’t sing anymore, climb into the ring and finish off the job.

Unibet Open is watching.

Unibet Open is learning.
