Chinese tourists lift Bloomberry Q2 profit

Philippine-listed casino operator Bloomberry Resorts is riding on the influx of Chinese tourists to the country as reflected in its second quarter earnings report.

Bloomberry said in a filing before the Philippine Stock Exchange that its net income during the April to June 2017 period rose 47 percent to PHP 1.96 billion (US$38.62 million).

This brought 6-month net income to P4.11 billion (US$80.96 million) from P191 million (US$3.76 million) during the comparable period last year, Bloomberry said.

“We are gratified to see the continuing results of our efforts to level up Solaire’s game. There will be no let-up in these efforts. We are on track, and we will continue to focus on surpassing our previous achievements,” Enrique Razon Jr., Bloomberry chair and chief executive officer, said in a press statement on Thursday.

Kangwon Land Q2 net profit down 10%

South Korean casino operator Kangwon Land Inc extended its losing streak in the second quarter with net profit tumbling 10.7 percent from the prior-year period.

Kangwon Land, the only South Korean casino that’s legally allowed to cater to local residents, posted a KRW110.4 billion (US$96.9 million) net profit, the second casino operator to announce a dismal second quarter result.

Analysts pointed out that Kangwon’s second quarter data was the “worst” result posted by Kangwon Land in more than five years.

“The disappointment came from mass (-9 percent year-on-year) and slots (-7 percent), while VIP (-3 percent) didn’t help either,” JP Morgan Securities analysts DS Kim and Sean Zhuang in a Wednesday note. “In our view, this seemingly reflects Kangwon Land’s efforts to ‘adjust’ revenues lower amid regulatory scrutiny, and the timing of business normalization remains frustratingly uncertain.”
