Macau, Connecticut casinos stage emergency response drills

Casinos in Macau and the United States held emergency response drills this week to gauge their ability to handle situations like last year’s mass shooting incident in Las Vegas.

In the wee hours of Monday morning, Galaxy Entertainment Group’s flagship Galaxy Macau resort staged a scenario in which four men acted as knife-wielding robbers who attacked several casino guests, then held them hostage while pretending to plant a suspected explosive device.

Casino security and police helped evacuate the resort’s other guests and attended to the ‘injured’ until the bomb squad could arrive. Mediators negotiated with the ‘suspects’ but this was apparently a ruse, as Special Operations Group agents closed in and rescued the ‘hostages.’

Over 350 individuals and nine entities – including the Judiciary Police, Public Security Police and the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau – took part in the ‘Wolf Hunting’ simulation, which was intended to determine how well the government and private sector firms cooperated in an emergency.

Greece’s Loutraki casino wins major back-tax fight with gov’t

Greece’s financially struggling Club Hotel Casino Loutraki sees some light at the end of the tunnel after winning a major back-tax court fight with the Greek government.

Last week, the Tripoli Administrative Court of Appeal ruled that the Greek government was wrong to hike the Loutraki casino’s tax rate from 20% to 33% in 1996. The ruling, details of which were reported by Greek media this week, mean the casino’s new tax rate will be 22% (counting a 2% municipal contribution).

The court ruled that the tax rate would apply retroactively, meaning the casino is now eligible for a government refund of €40m to cover the years 2008-11. A separate claim covering the years 2012-15 could add a further €18m to the government’s tab, and both sums could be subject to interest payments.

All told, the Loutraki casino could be in for a €70m payday, but the government is actually getting off easy. The court deemed the tax years prior to 2008 to be ineligible, otherwise the government would be facing a €450m tab.

Patriots settle as solid Super Bowl betting favorites against Eagles

The New England Patriots (15-3) and Philadelphia Eagles (15-3) were both the top seeds in their respective conferences heading into the playoffs, so it is not too much of a surprise to see them squaring off in Super Bowl 52 on February 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

But the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots are fortunate that Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will not be on the field, making them 5-point favorites.

With Wentz under center, bettors would likely be looking at close to a pick’em game. Instead, they get to agonize over deciding whether or not backup Nick Foles is really worth that many points, or if Philadelphia’s defense can somehow limit New England’s Tom Brady and an offense that looks as good as ever, especially when it counts.
