Landing International swings to profit in 2017

Hong Kong-listed Landing International Development Limited (LIDL) has become profitable again in 2017, no thanks to its gambling segment.

In a disclosure to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, LIDL reported that the company jumped to a HK$505.1 million ($64.55 million) profit in 2017 from a loss of HK$1.1 billion ($140.58 million) in the previous year.

The company attributed its profit swing to the stellar performance of its property development segment—including the sale of condominium units at Jeju Shinhwa—and the disposal of Les Ambassadeurs Club and Casino, an upmarket gaming venue in London.

LIDL’s gaming business, however, remained a drag to the company as its revenue dropped 35.1 percent to HK$235.80 million ($30.13 million) in 2017 compared to HK$363.45 million ($46.47 million) revenue in 2016.

Asian headwinds hammer Playtech 2017 revenue

Net revenue of British gaming and spread betting company Playtech Plc. hit a break in 2017 due to the strong operational headwinds in Asia.

In a regulatory filing, Playtech announced on Thursday that the company’s net revenue grew 18 percent to €807.1 million ($991.9 million) in the 12 months ending December 31, 2017, from last year’s €708.6 million ($870.87 million). Meanwhile, adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization also rose 11 percent to €322.1 million ($395.86 million).

Playtech’s modest, double-digit gains in 2017, however, paled in comparison with the 20 percent net revenue growth rate that the company achieved in the prior year period.

Nevertheless, Playtech Chairman Alan Jackson was quite satisfied with the financial results, noting that latest figures were in line with the revised growth expectations in November.

Champions League round-up: another clean sheet for Utd; Donetsk beats Roma

The final round-up of the Champions League Round of 16 sees Manchester United secure a goalless draw in Sevilla, and Shakhtar Donetsk beat Roma in Ukraine.

There are a few things I take for granted.

We dress human bones in the flesh. We cling to identities that don’t serve us, and we don’t need. You should never sit through a Manchester United away game in the Champions League.

The accusatory fingers of boredom all point to one man this morning – Jose Mourinho. But, let’s be honest here, United had the same game plan when Sir Alex Ferguson was finding the semi-finals with the same accuracy Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor finds a treble 20.

India’s Poker Sports League opens bidding for Kolkata Royals sale

If anyone is interested in buying a poker team, now’s the time to do it. India’s Poker Sports League (PSL) has a team for sale, the Kolkata Royals, and is currently accepting bids. Despite having been close to selling the team twice in the past month, both deals fell through due to a conflict of interest between the potential owner and the league.

The new owner will have to sign an eight-year contract to run the team. Franchise fees the first year amount to a little more than $88,000 and the player fee is around $21,500. One hundred percent of the revenue picked up through sponsorships and advertising deals is retained by the franchisee, while 50% of the revenue earned by the PSL is divided among all the teams in the league.

The PSL is a unified poker league comprised of 12 teams competing for cash. Each team has nine players – one mentor or captain, two professional players, two players from live free qualifying games, two from free online qualifying games and two wild card entries. Anyone in India is eligible to be a part of a team, and online players can qualify by playing on India’s premiere poker site, Adda52.com.

The PSL launched in 2017, and had a very successful run. This year, a larger turnout is expected when the league launches in April, and the games could be hosted in either Mumbai or Kolkata. The league’s founder, Amit Burman, indicated that season 2 has received a lot of attention and is gaining popularity.

Denmark’s horseracing turnover tax disses dogs, pigeons

Denmark’s licensed online gambling operators looking to take wagers on local horse races must now pay a hefty premium for the privilege.

On January 1, Denmark’s Spillemyndigheden regulatory agency officially authorized its online and land-based gambling licensees to begin taking wagers on animal-based races, be they horse, dog or pigeon. Oh, and it also okayed online bingo, which we’re assuming wasn’t a reference to the dog from that B-I-N-G-O song.

On Wednesday, the regulator reminded its licensees that bets on Danish horse races are taxed differently than other events. While most products involve a tax on operators’ betting revenue, operators must pay a ‘special contribution’ amounting to 8% of horse wagering turnover.

The new rules apply to races at Danish tracks, but not to Danish horses racing abroad. Should a punter combine a Danish horseracing wager with other racing bets, “the special contribution of the players entire contribution must be paid,” regardless of where the other races take place.
