Imperial Pacific, Saipan guv reject latest Bloomberg allegations

Casino operator Imperial Pacific International (IPI) and Saipan’s governor are pushing back against allegations of corruption made via a Bloomberg News article.

Last week, Bloomberg published a lengthy exposé of what it deemed to be IPI’s dismal worker safety record, the eyebrow-raising numbers generated by its gaming tables and whether financial payments to legislators’ relatives can explain the government’s laissez-faire approach to regulating IPI’s activities.

On Monday, IPI issued a statement calling the latest Bloomberg piece “just another enumeration of false claims similar to those in similar Bloomberg articles.” IPI said it was clear that “the article was written to attack Imperial Pacific, its owners and agents, the Commonwealth Casino Commission, the CNMI government and its leaders, and individual members of the CNMI community.”

Among the latest Bloomberg article’s allegations was the company making “millions of dollars in payments to family members of the territory’s governor, Ralph Deleon Guerrero Torres.” These payments included $126k paid to a law firm run by Torres’ three brothers, a land lease payment of $667k to Torres’ sister-in-law for a property she purchased five months earlier for just $180k, and over $4m in land payments to Serafin Camacho, who’s married to the governor’s first cousin Lillian.

Malta Gaming Authority boss Joseph Cuschieri stepping down

Malta’s gaming regulatory boss is leaving his post following a flurry of negative headlines regarding its Italian-based online gambling licensees.

On Sunday, the Times of Malta reported that Malta Gaming Authority executive chairman Joseph Cuschieri would be leaving the regulatory agency to become CEO of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). The MFSA doesn’t technically have a CEO position, forcing the government to amend the law to create the position.

Cuschieri won’t be entirely saying goodbye to the gaming industry, as the MFSA oversees all financial services in Malta, including credit institutions, financial and electronic money institutions, securities and investment services, insurance as well as consumer education and consumer protection.

The Times of Malta further claimed that Cuschieri’s longtime lieutenant Heathcliff Farrugia was the likely pick to head up the MGA, while Malta Investment Management Company LTD chairman Adrian Said would likely become the MGA’s new non-executive chairman.

Xenophon, political party vow to slash pokies number by a third

Australian senate powerbroker Nick Xenophon and his political party have unveiled plans to cut the number of poker machines from 12,100 to 8,100 in a span of five years.

The Guardian reported that Xenophon’s SA Best Party has rolled out its newest gambling reform package, a policy described as “both a deal maker and a deal breaker.” Xenophon, who made a name in politics 20 years ago for his “No Pokies” battle cry, believed that the rethought package was “sensible and practical.”

“What we’ve said is that there’s flexibility within the way that you achieve it, but what we’re seeking to achieve is, I think, reasonable,” Xenophon said, according to the news outlet. “I suggest to you that if SA Best is in a position of power to hold the next government to account, then both Labor and the Liberals will become born again gambling reformers in a very short amount of time.”

In a nutshell, SA Best Party proposed to reduce the number of poker machines in hotels and clubs and introducing a system of AUD1 ($0.79) maximum bets per spin. The political party also wanted to get rid of the Eftpos access near the pokies and to prohibit the gambling industry from pouring money into the campaign kitties of political parties.

Premier Lotteries Ireland prods government to ban online lottery bets

The days are probably numbered for internationally licensed gambling operators that offer betting on Irish lottery draws.

The Irish Sun reported that Irish National Lottery operator Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI) demanded the government to pull the plug on what it described as “parasitic” online gambling operators—such as Lottoland, MyLotto 24 and MultiLotto—that made money out of the outcome of the national draw.

PLI pointed out that the online gambling operators were able to cash in on the outcome of lotteries due to a loophole in the current Irish regulatory environment.

“They utilize the names of ‘Lotto’ and ‘EuroMillions,’ potentially leading players to believe they are participating in National Lottery games and contributing to good causes. In fact, they are just betting on the outcome of games,” a PLI spokesman said, according to the news outlet.

As a vote of confidence to the Philippine gambling market, Ang said that Oriental Game plans to expand its operations in the country.
