New PPA chief looks for more donations to stay afloat

After John Pappas announced his resignation as the president of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), effective at the end of this month, the group’s vice president, Rich Muny, stepped in to fill his shoes. His first order of business has been to find money from any source possible, and recently penned an email to PPA members, as well as those that are on the group’s mailing list, asking them to step up and help them out. He pointed out in the email that the group is hemorrhaging, and desperately needs an infusion of cash.

Pappas left primarily for the same reason that prompted Muny’s email. There has been a substantial decrease in the group’s working capital, making it more and more difficult for Pappas to be effective in promoting poker-related cause. The group has been extensively fundamental in helping to sway policy at both the state and the federal level to advance poker in the country.

Muny indicated that the PPA is facing closure, in the midst of one of the most crucial years for poker. If the group doesn’t earn $25,000 by the end of March, it will have no choice but to shutter its operations. The money will go towards operational expenses of its communications and advocacy operations. The PPA conducts grass-roots efforts to increase poker’s reputation and help influence policy to protect poker players. It was able to force the return of $120 million that was illegally garnered from players as a result of Black Friday, and has been crucial in four states that have legalized Internet poker—Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

The PPA has always been a volunteer network of people working toward the cause of promoting safe poker activities in the United States. It was founded in 2005 and currently has over 1 million members. It has always relied on donations to operate, but interest waned somewhat in 2006 after the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which the PPA unsuccessfully tried to block. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently addressing the constitutionality of the UIGEA, and its anticipated reversal could come as early as March of this year.

There is a saying in the crypto world: not your keys – not your coins! – Aviya Arika

To protect their funds from hacker attacks, wallet owners should keep their keys in offline wallets, and cryptocurrency exchanges must use secure servers and trusted payment systems. This is an opinion stated by Head of Blockchain Innovation at Nir Porat & Co. Law Firm Aviya Arika. Aviya will present at Blockchain & Bitcoin Conference Switzerland, so we talked to her about cyber security of cryptocurrency exchanges and practices of regulating such organizations.

– Hello, Aviya! We can see from the media that it is not uncommon for hackers to steal funds from the wallets of ordinary cryptocurrency exchange users. What do you think people should do in order to minimize the risk of losing funds from their stock exchange accounts?

– Hello! If you, as a user, choose to keep your coins on the exchange itself instead of sending it to an external wallet of which private keys’ you have the control over, then you are automatically increasing your risk level. There is a saying in the crypto world: “not your keys — not your coins!” and this is essentially true, because when you keep your coins on the exchange, practically it means that the coins are stored in the exchange’s wallet, a wallet (and private keys) which is within the exchange’s control. An exchange at its most currently common centralised form has a single point of failure, and if this point of failure is compromised (for example, gets hacked), then the hacker gets control over the private keys, meaning control over the exchange’s wallets, meaning your coins are gone.

Therefore, to minimise risk it’s always better to get your coins out of the exchange and into your own wallet, the private keys of which you and only you have control over. If you can’t do this because, for example, you want to have available balances of coins for trading on the exchange, then at least make sure you use 2 factor authentication and other control measures, to protect your account as much as possible.

New resort development announced by the Government of Antigua & The Ayre Group

A new and unique five star resort in Antigua was announced by the Ayre Group today. The development is located on the Valley Church beach and design work is already underway, with works scheduled to commence on site in late summer of 2018.

The announcement was made by His Excellency Calvin Ayre, the Chairman of The Ayre Group, who also acts as Special Economic Envoy for the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. Hon. Ayre warmly thanked the Prime Minister, The Hon. Gaston Browne, and all of the Government departments which have offered valuable support to the development in its progress to date.

Hon. Ayre said, “In my discussions with Government about the project we agreed that the new resort was very much in keeping with the government’s strategy for further upscale tourism development. This resort will attract a totally new market segment of tourism on the island – successful wellness seekers who also want to have fun. The property will not be an all-inclusive destination, instead, its amenities will be available to residents of Antigua and Barbuda and visitors alike. I am confident that the type of guest we will attract will wish to explore Antigua – its culture and history, as well as all of our many diverse attractions and activities. We are focused on creating for a very special market, a world-class resort and unforgettable experience, but also one which benefits the broader economy across the whole island.”

Prime Minister, the Hon. Gaston Browne welcomed the new development and said, “We expect the resort’s novel and exciting concept to broaden Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism product and bring a new category of tourists to our islands. Furthermore, the additional resort rooms will help drive an increased number of airline seats to Antigua, further boost the island’s tourism profile, and expand our economy. We look forward to working with Mr. Ayre on this resort and the many other investments he has made in Antigua.”

A sweet adventure with SugarPop 2: Double Dipped

Betsoft Gaming have announced the release of their much-anticipated sequel title SUGARPOP 2: DOUBLE DIPPED. Similar to the extremely popular initial title in the series, SUGARPOP 2 offers a serene dreamland of clouds and sugary treats. Packed with exciting new features, this game is certain to keep players engaged.

SUGARPOP 2 is a 7×7 grid videoslot. This game is based around the cluster win system adding the possibility for additional wins. In this edition of the game, two new cluster mechanics have been added. This includes a Candy Wild that appears on the board when a cluster of 5 or more is exploded and a Candy Bomb that is created when 5 or more clusters are exploded in a single spin.

A Chocolate Surprise Egg will appear at random and crack open, revealing any one of the special candies that the player has unlocked. These candies each have special abilities that allow players to earn even more rewards. A Jelly Bean Cannon fires jelly beans onto the board, while a Sweet Hammer smashes the board, breaking all the candies in its way. The release also features a Chewy Caramel and Morphing Golden Wild.

“SUGARPOP 2 is a bright, fun, sequel we really enjoyed developing,” said Dan Cooper, Betsoft’s Head of Product Development. “The original was far more successful than any of us could have imagined. We wanted to stay true to the original game and add another layer of engagement to this game. Player and distributer feedback was taken on board to help us offer something new and improved, yet familiar to players of the original.”

India’s Deltin Poker tournament sees strong female participation

Last year, India saw a marked increase in amateur poker enthusiasm in the country. The game has become particularly popular among women and has even commanded support by President Ram Nath Kovind, who honored 100 female players at a ceremony in November.  One of the newest online poker sites, 9stacks, is latching on to the fervor and is sponsoring nine females at the Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT), India’s largest poker tournament, running February 15 to 19.

9stacks’ founder Sudhir Kamat hopes to increase gender diversity in the country, and to inspire women to take up poker. The group, who has received the nickname “the Nine Missketeers,” is being led by Muskan Sethi, one of the women honored by Kovind last year. The group also includes journalist Radhika Mahalingaiah, writers Chandni Malik and Simrit Tiwana, social media experts Sakshi Misra and Prashaste Sinha, entrepreneur Ritu Chadha, India Institute of Management graduate Lavanya Thota and former Online Poker News founder Rupal Bansal.

Sethi is a professional poker player originally from New Delhi. Besides dedicating a great deal of time to the game, the 28-year-old is also employed as a social worker. Since picking up poker in 2010, she has racked up $150,000 playing online and in live tournaments. Her inspiration to get involved came from watching reruns of WPT tournaments and watching Poker After Dark on YouTube. She won a PokerStars SharkCage qualifier three years ago through a free ticket and took a seat at the $1 million event against some of the biggest names in poker.

Poker in India, as it has been in many parts of the world, has been dominated by male players. This has changed recently, as more women have been joining online poker sites in the country. 9Stacks decided to encourage more women to play, with Kamat stating, “Given that poker is a mind sport that requires strategic acumen regardless of [the] gender we think there’s a huge market waiting to be tapped here.”

3 Barrels: Gilmartin to host awards; Woods’ charity change and Safari time

3 Barrels of a World Poker Tour flavour including Lynn Gilmartin stepping up to host the 4th Annual American Poker Awards, Tiger Woods changing the name of his foundation and WPTDeepStacks prepares to go on a safari.

The paradoxical pulse of parenthood doesn’t skip poker. We kneel in the darkness; our hands clenched so tight blood escapes on the pale rider as we pray for the pain, suffering and joy of birth. It’s like missing your flush draw on the river in the final hand of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.

No it isn’t.

But you get my point.

40-hours: ESPN release preliminary WSOP live schedule; WSOPC host online ring

Broadcast giant ESPN has released a preliminary schedule containing 40-hours of live action from the World Series of Poker Main Event and Big One for One Drop, and online grinders get the opportunity to win a Circuit ring.

Experience is everything.

So many poker players told me the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event would be ‘different’ to any other tournament I had ever experienced, there was a bundle of letters preventing me from opening my door of belief on this one.

And then I got there.

Poker is Phil Hellmuth Jr.: YouStake deal shows the man still has it

The world’s leading sports staking platform, YouStake, has hit the big time after signing Phil Hellmuth as an ambassador and advisor, and he immediately puts 60% of his World Poker Tour action up for sale.

Poker is chips. Poker is cards. Poker is bad beats. Poker is ‘All-In.’ Poker is adrenaline. Poker is tears. Poker is tantrums. Poker is bluffing. Poker is flops, turns and rivers. Poker is Phil Hellmuth Jr.

I’m going to have a Dwayne Johnson style shout out here.

“It doesn’t matter what you think of Phil Hellmuth Jr…”
