SunCity junket launching VIP facility at Cambodia’s Naga 2

Leading casino junket operator Suncity Group has inked a deal to steer VIP gambling whales to Cambodia’s newest gaming venue.

This week, SunCity announced that it was opening a VIP gambling facility at Naga 2, the second phase of NagaCorp’s flagship property NagaWorld in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh. SunCity’s new VIP facility will have its grand opening ceremony on March 1.

Earlier this week, NagaCorp reported that its VIP turnover shot up 142% in 2017, due in part to the launch in November of the Naga 2 facility, which added 300 gaming tables (not all of them VIP, mind you) to the property’s existing offering. NagaCorp also hailed its existing junket relationships for driving VIP traffic.

Union Gaming analyst Grant Govertsen commented this week that Macau junkets were near-unanimous in their positive view of the Naga 2 development and expressed interest in delivering VIPs to the facility. As such, Govertsen predicted Naga’s VIP program would generate “Macau-flagship-like VIP volumes on a go-forward basis.”

SkyCity Entertainment hails return of Asian gambling whales

Aussie/Kiwi casino operator SkyCity Entertainment Group says its Asian VIP gambling business has recovered from its year-plus slump.

On Thursday, SkyCity published its fiscal H1 report card, which showed revenue rising 4% to NZ$554.7 (US$400.2m) in the six months ending December 31, 2017. Net income fared better, rising 11.6% to NZ$93.5m.

The company credited the gains to modest growth at its New Zealand properties, stable performance at its Australian casinos, and growth in its so-called International Business (IB), which the rest of the casino world refers to as Chinese gambling whales.

Total IB turnover across all SkyCity properties was up 9.4% to NZ$4.8b, and IB revenue was up an identical percentage to NZ$64.8m. More importantly, IB earnings were up 87% to NZ$14m thanks to win rate coming in at 1.55%, above the theoretical mark of 1.35%.

Pennsylvania’s third mini-casino license auctioned for $21.2m

Pennsylvania’s third satellite casino license auction brought in significantly less money than the first two but you don’t hear the state government complaining.

Pennsylvania’s third Category 4 casino license auction was supposed to go down on Wednesday, but inclement weather forced the state to postpone the festivities for 24 hours. Three bids were received, with the operator of the Mount Airy Casino Resort in Monroe County coming out on top with a winning bid of just under $21.2m.

That sum is lower than the $40.1m paid by Stadium Gaming LLP two weeks ago, which was itself lower than the $50.1m that Penn National Gaming (PNG) paid for the state’s first Cat 4 auction last month. Regardless, with seven more licenses still up for grabs, the state has now earned $111.4m, significantly more than the $67.5m the state booked as potential revenue from the Cat 4 program this year.

Mount Airy has chosen the city of New Castle in Lawrence County as the site of its new satellite venue, which will boast somewhere between 300 and 750 slot machines, plus up to 30 gaming tables for an addition license fee of $2.5m.

Betsson vows overhaul to reverse earnings slide

Nordic online gambling operator Betsson AB closed out 2017 with another double-digit earnings decline and warnings that the situation may not improve until the end of 2018.

Figures released Thursday show the Stockholm-based Betsson’s revenue rising 12% to SEK1.25b (US$154.8m) in the three months ending December 31, 2017, but operating income and profit both fell 18% to SEK218.4m and SEK199m, respectively.

Similar patterns dominated the year as a whole, with revenue in positive territory (SEK4.7b, +15%), and operating income (SEK882m, -7%) and profit (SEK786.5m, -10%) broadly negative.

The company blamed the ongoing decline on a now familiar list of factors, including negative currency fluctuations, costs associated with the company’s recent spate of pricey acquisitions, and the failure of some of those acquired companies to live up to their earning potential.
