Nevada sportsbooks Super Bowl handle record, net win tumbles

Nevada casino sportsbooks crushed their previous record for Super Bowl betting handle, but their net win was the lowest in ten years.

On Monday, the Nevada Gaming Control Board revealed that state-licensed sportsbooks handled $158.6m in Super Bowl wagers, over $20m higher than last year’s then-record $138.5m. The books have set handle records in four of the last five years and have topped $100m in wagers every year since 2014.

However, the books held a mere 0.7% of bettors’ wagers, which translates to a lowly $1.17m in net win. Last year’s hold was 7.9%, which resulted in a $10.9m win. Still, it’s preferable to losing $2.5m, which the books did in 2008, the last year the books come out on the wrong side of that equation.

The books got pummeled by a majority of bettors believing that the final score would exceed 48 points, and in taking the underdog Eagles to win straight up. There were five bets of at least $1m, four of which were on the Eagles, including a $3m money line wager placed with the MGM Grand late last month.

The 888Poker Brief and the openness and generosity of competition

Lee Davy writes a short and sweet opinion piece on the role that competition plays in poker after watching a refreshing Poker Brief from 888Poker.

Competition is a good thing. I know that. It’s been drummed into my head since I was a kid. Another truism from the ages is that the competitors are not a good thing. You have to beat the competition at all costs. The taking part is fun brigade are a bunch of nancies.

I don’t think like that anymore.

Today, I believe that in almost every situation, competition is a good thing and that means your competitors glow in that same goodness.

Hard Rock Int’l pick GiG for New Jersey online casino partner

Casino operator Hard Rock International (HRI) has partnered with Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) on a New Jersey online casino.

On Monday, the Florida-based HRI announced that its iGaming division had entered into a strategic partnership with the Malta-based GiG to build and launch a new online casino for New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market sometime this year.

HRI is currently prepping this summer’s launch of Hard Rock Atlantic City, following the company’s acquisition of the bankrupt Trump Taj Mahal last spring. The property is currently undergoing a $500m facelift to ditch the Taj’s tacky minarets and purple color scheme for a more palatable music-themed vibe.

Last month, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) confirmed that HRI had applied for an online gambling license, but the company’s technology partner remained a mystery until Monday.

Departing UK regulator’s parting shot at gambling industry

The departing CEO of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) delivered some strong words to the gaming industry before she headed for the exits.

On Monday, Sarah Harrison delivered a speech titled Is Responsible Gambling Enough? at the World Regulatory Briefing and International Casino Conference, the prelude to this week’s ICE Totally Gaming 2018 conference. Harrison, who will relinquish her role as UKGC leader at the end of this month, didn’t sugarcoat her view that the industry is in need of serious change.

Harrison lamented the view held by many industry types of the UKGC “taking a head-teacherly tone.” Harrison wondered what else operators should expect “when the nature of debate between different parts of the industry is often no better than what you might find in the playground.”

Harrison also took the industry to task for its treatment of women, calling it “a significant stain on this industry’s reputation.” Harrison noted that a stroll around the exhibition floor revealed “men representing their companies wearing expensive tailored suits whilst their female colleagues were expected to wear nothing more than swimsuits.”
