Atlantic City casino tables help break two-month losing streak

Atlantic City casinos broke their two-month losing streak by posting an extremely modest brick-and-mortar gaming revenue increase in April.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) released its April casino report card on Monday, which showed the state’s seven licensed operators earning a combined $191.4m from their brick-and-mortar gaming operations in April, up a mere 0.3% from the same month last year, but hey, a gain is a gain is a gain.

Unlike the previous two months, the state’s table games really came through for AC’s casinos in April, with revenue spiking 11.4% to $54.9m, while slot machine revenue played spoiler by slipping 3.6% to $136.5m. Counting the $23m contributed by the casinos’ online gambling operations, April’s overall gaming win improved 1.3% to $214.4m.

The Borgata suffered a 9.1% year-on-year brick-and-mortar gaming revenue decline in April, but its $53.1m was still enough to outclass its competitors. Runner-up Harrah’s improved 7.8% to $29.1m, just ahead of its sister site Caesars AC, which gained 3.9% to $29m.

New Jersey online gambling market has second-best month

New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market had its second highest revenue month in April, despite online poker’s perpetual inability to grow.

Figures released Monday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) show the state’s licensed online gambling operators generated combined revenue of $23m in April, a 10.6% improvement over the same month last year but below the record $25.6m set in March 2018.

In what has become a familiar refrain, the online casino vertical did all the heavy lifting, with revenue rising 12.7% year-on-year to $21.25m, while the online poker vertical continued its one-way ticket to Palookaville by falling 10.5% to $1.76m.

The Golden Nugget’s family of online casino sites – GoldenNuggetCasino.com, BetfairCasino.com and PlaySugarHouse.com – saw its revenue slip slightly from March’s record $8.65m but the $8.13m earned in April was still sufficient to claim top honors for the month.

Skyrocket Entertainment seeks film, online gambling tie-ups

A new company aims to facilitate marketing tie-ups between film and gambling companies to incorporate moviemakers’ intellectual property into online gambling games.

On Sunday, the Hollywood Reporter announced that veteran gaming industry executive Richard Clarke had teamed with Sean O’Kelly, who until recently headed up UK film producer Carnaby International, on a new online gambling film rights entity dubbed Skyrocket Entertainment.

The executive tandem announced Skyrocket’s arrival at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, promoting the new venture as a potentially lucrative new revenue stream for filmmakers and rights holders to help offset the costs of production.

The report claimed Skyrocket was actively courting clients in Cannes and the company hopes to license as many as 100 games per year between rights holders and online operators.
