Jack Binion to host poker tournament for charity next month

A charity poker event coming to Las Vegas next month will be hosted by one of the most well known names in poker. Jack Binion, son of casino mogul Benny Binion of Binion Horseshoe casino and first host of the WSOP in 1970, will host the Go All In for Memories poker tournament, an event designed to raise money for the Keep Memory Alive charitable organization.

The tournament will take place on September 21 at the Keep Memory Alive event center near Downtown Las Vegas. It will offer a $500 buy-in game with $10,000 going to the tournament winner. Runner-up prizes include trips, wine from Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, jewelry and more. The event gets underway at 5:30 (local time) and the poker tournament will kick off an hour later.

Keep Memory Alive is a group that raises funds and awareness for the Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. The center provides no-cost services for caregivers, patient care and research programs focusing on memory disorders such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple system atrophy and multiple sclerosis.

The event has already seen several top poker names sign up to attend. Daniel Negreanu, Barry Shulman, Jack McClelland and Doyle Brunson, among others, are all expected to take a seat at the felt for the worthy cause.

Wynn Fall Classic schedule released

After a successful Wynn Summer Classic, which saw the prize pool double the original $1.5-million guarantee, poker players were anxious to see what was on tap next. The Wynn Fall Classic (WFC) in the Encore poker room at Wynn Las Vegas is right around the corner and the schedule has finally been released.

The WFC will take place from September 26 to October 14. There will be a total of 16 events offering a combined prize pool of over $1.8 million – possibly much more if turnout is as impressive as it was for the summer championship. The schedule features the addition of a new $3,200 High Roller tournament, which will kick off on October 10. All NLHE events of the series will use the big blind ante format.

The Championship Event, a $1,600 buy-in tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of $500,000, is expected to be the big attraction of the series. There will be starting flights on October 12 and 13 and levels will increase by 15 minutes on each day. Day 1 will see 45-minute levels, Day 2, 60-minute levels and the final day will have 75-minute levels.

Last year, over 3,000 entries were logged for the series, which only offered eight events. Despite the smaller amount of tournaments, the prize pool swelled to $1.9 million and the Championship Event recorded 447 entries to push the guarantee up to $650,000.

Saved by the bell: Landing shares drop 35% before trading ends

As the future of Landing International in the Philippines is still somewhat questionable, the company saw its stock price drop heavily on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE) before the decision was made to suspend its trading. After the opening bell, the price began to fall and ultimately fell by 35.06% within 90 minutes before being halted at 10:53 AM.

When trading was halted, the stock was valued at $0.479. When the market closed the day prior, the stock’s price was right at $0.73. Landing said it requested the suspension of trading with the HKSE “pending the release of an announcement in relation to inside information of the company.”

Landing’s filing with the HKSE further explained, “The board is not aware of any reasons for these price and volume movements or of any information which must be announced to avoid a false market in the company’s securities or of any inside information that needs to be disclosed under… the Securities and Futures Ordinance.”

While it is still too soon to start the conspiracy theories, apparently the company’s chairman is missing in action. Yang Zhihui was last seen in Cambodia on Wednesday, and Landing indicated that it was “making attempts to contact Mr. Yang.”

PlaySugarHouse is New Jersey’s third digital wagering option

Another day, another series of breathless updates on America’s nascent legal sports betting market.

We start in New Jersey, where Thursday saw Rush Street Interactive’s PlaySugarHouse.com online casino add its new Kambi-powered SugarHouse Sportsbook.

It’s been a busy week for PlaySugarHouse.com, which also just unveiled its new live dealer casino. SugarHouse was also the first New Jersey site to launch virtual sports betting last November.

The sportsbook launch followed one day after MGM Resorts launched its new mobile betting app via its playMGM brand, spoiling the brief monopoly that daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings had enjoyed via the launch of its Kambi-powered app earlier this month.

Djokovic, Williams the favorites on U.S. Open odds

The fourth and final Grand Slam event in tennis each year is the U.S. Open, and for all intents and purposes it signals the end of the tennis season for casual fans and bettors on the sport. This year’s tournament begins on Monday in New York and concludes with the men’s singles final on September 9 – the women’s final is the night before.

Each of the four majors in tennis has a different personality, so to speak. The Australian Open is the first of the year and known for the crazy heat in Melbourne. The French Open has the peculiar red clay that tends to benefit only certain players. Wimbledon has the most tradition and the grass courts. The U.S. Open, played on hard courts, is the rowdiest of the four majors. The fans get more involved in New York than anywhere else.

The favorite on the men’s side is No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic at +250. The Serb is a two-time champion, winning in 2011 and 2015. He also has lost in the final five times, most recently in 2016 to Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka. Djokovic entered this year in a big slump but broke out of that by winning Wimbledon for the fourth time. He also just won a U.S. Open warm-up event in Cincinnati by beating Roger Federer in the final.

Greece-approved online betting turnover tops €5.3b in 2017

Greece is a nature of stone-cold degenerate gamblers, according to the government’s latest statistics.

Figures released Thursday by the Gaming Supervision and Control Commission (EEEP) showed Greek citizens spent €6.01b on all forms of land-based gambling in 2017, an 8.7% rise on 2016’s total. Last year’s land-based gross gambling revenue was up 2.3% to €1.63b.

Greek lottery and betting monopoly OPAP claimed nearly €4b of this turnover, while other lotteries contributed €458m and the Athens racetrack handled a mere €41m.

The nation’s nine casinos generated spending of €1.582b, essentially flat from 2016’s €1.577b while revenue came in at €253.3m. But the casinos managed to hold fast despite casino visitation falling 4.4% year-on-year to 2.45m and the total number of gaming options (slots, tables, terminals, etc.) falling 3.46%.

CG Technology’s Nevada sportsbook future sketchy as regulators reject settlement

Embattled sports betting technology supplier CG Technology (CGT) could lose its Nevada license after state gaming regulators rejected a proposed financial settlement for the company’s latest slip-ups.

On Thursday, the Nevada Gaming Commission (GC) rejected a $250k financial deal that CGT had worked out with the Nevada Gaming Control Board (GCB) earlier this month to cover a variety of infractions, including allowing out-of-state bettors to wager with Nevada sportsbooks.

The GC’s refusal to let CGT off with a financial penalty was unanimous, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted Commissioner John Moran saying “this isn’t a fine issue. It is a revocation issue. I can’t think of a more egregious ongoing pattern of violations.”

CGT, formerly known as Cantor Gaming, has appeared hat in hand before state regulators numerous times in recent years, paying a record $5.5m in 2014 to atone for its connection to an illegal messenger betting operation. In July 2016, CGT paid a further $1.5m for software glitches that led to some bettors being underpaid and others underpaid.
