Full House Resorts to add motion sickness to horseracing

Boutique casino operator Full House Resorts (FHR) thinks motion sickness is the missing ingredient in “redefining the sport of horse racing.”

On Monday, FHR unveiled its proposal for a $200m destination resort in New Mexico the company has dubbed La Posada del Liano (“The Inn on the Plains”). The company has optioned 520 acres of land east of the city of Clovis on which it hopes to build a racetrack, 35k-square-foot casino, luxury hotel, 18-hole golf course, water park and other amenities.

So far, so standard, but FHR has brought the ‘wow’ – or, depending on your perspective, the ‘wtf’ – through what it calls a Moving Grandstand (pictured). In short, it’s a portion of the racetrack’s stadium seating that will be mounted on rails and will move in tandem with the horses during races.

FHR CEO Daniel Lee said typical racetracks offer grandstand viewers only “two brief moments of a race – its start and the closing seconds at the finish line.” The Moving Grandstand will allow spectators to “race side-by-side with the horses for every dramatic second,” an innovation that Lee predicts will “open horse racing to a new generation of fans.”

Casino di Campione still hopes to rise from its bankruptcy ashes

Italy’s once-fabled Casino di Campione could become a medical clinic after its ignominious descent into bankruptcy.

The casino, which resides on the shores of Lake Lugano within the municipality of Campione d’Italia – part of the Italian province of Como despite being surrounded by land belonging to Switzerland – was forced into bankruptcy in July after liquidators rejected plans to restructure its €132m debt.

The casino was 100% owned by the municipality, which sought an ever higher cut of gaming revenue, putting a strain on the operation’s finances. Prosecutors also alleged that the casino’s management company engaged in a range of financial impropriety over the years that contributed to the property’s red ink.

With its cash cow shuttered, and its nearly 500 staff – out of a total population of only 2,000 – out of work, the municipality is now in its own dire financial straits.

Finnish teen, parents stole €250k from Malta online casino

An online casino in Malta was robbed of €250k by a Finnish teenager whose parents are now on trial for sharing in his ill-gotten gains.

On Tuesday, Finnish media outlet YLE reported on a case of aggravated fraud currently winding its way through the Häme District Court involving a teenager from the town of Forssa who discovered a glitch in the software of an unspecified Malta-based online casino.

According to the report, the teenager – described as “now about 18 years old” – discovered that the casino software allowed him to cancel customers’ pending withdrawal requests and have the money transferred to an online wallet rather than the customers’ bank accounts.

The tech-savvy teen reportedly made 147 withdrawal requests in just one month, taking the unlucky — although lucky to have remained unidentified — gaming operator for a total of €250k before a site staffer discovered the theft in July 2017.

Swiss lottery, betting sales fall in 2017 while VPN use surges

Switzerland suffered a decline in lottery and sports betting turnover in 2017, while the use of virtual private networks (VPN) has soared since the government passed its restrictive new online gambling law.

Figures released this month by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice show lottery and betting turnover hit CHF2.81b (US$2.84b) in 2017, a decline of 6.4% from 2016, which benefitted from a record-high Swiss Lotto jackpot of CHF70m. Gross gaming revenue from lottery and betting products was down 5.4% to CHF942m.

The country’s two main lottery operators – Swisslos, which caters to German-speakers, and Lotterie Romande, which operates in French – claimed 99.8% of 2017’s gross gaming revenue. Two lottery games – Swiss Lotto and EuroMillions – accounted for 45.3% of gross gaming revenue.

Combined sports and race betting turnover amounted to CHF184.3m, down around CHF10m year-on-year, while revenue fell around CFH3m to CHF58.3m. These betting figures were dominated by horseracing, which accounted for CHF130.6m of 2017’s turnover and CHF34.9m in revenue.

China threatens illegal lottery operators, hosting networks

China’s government has issued a public reminder to all and sundry that online lottery sales are, for the time being at least, strictly illegal.

On Tuesday, 12 Chinese ministries and commissions issued a joint communiqué “resolutely prohibiting the unauthorized use of the Internet to sell lottery tickets” while vowing to “seriously investigate and deal with corporate or personal illegal and illegal online sales.”

The 12 government bodies that signed on to the announcement include the Ministry of Finance that oversees lottery operations, the People’s Bank of China as well as the feared Ministry of Public Security.

The government plans a “three-dimensional remedial action” that tasks the Ministry of Culture and Tourism with policing the “unauthorized use of online sales in online games,” while banking officials will monitor “the provision of payment settlement services” to unauthorized lottery operations.

Poker content affected by the introduction of ads on Twitch Prime

Fans of poker Twitch streams will be angry to hear that the company turning a profit of $1.5-2 billion per quarter is cancelling its ad-free Twitch Prime perk in an attempt to convert users to the $8.99 per month Twitch Turbo option.

I used to love the James Altucher podcast.

It wasn’t his razor-sharp wit.

It had nothing to do with his self-deprecation.

Thus, the Players’ Choice award solely depends on players’ opinion.

EPL review week 2: Liverpool clip the Eagles wings with a two-goal win

Match Day 2 of the English Premier League is in the books after Liverpool continued their rich Monday Night Football form with a victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool once again proved why they are Man City’s main rivals this season after a polished performance at Selhurst Park.

Both sides came into this one in decent nick. Palace enjoyed an away day win at Fulham in the opening game of the season and had not lost a Premier League game in seven, stretching back to a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool on the last day of March.

During the Man City Amazon Prime special All or Nothing there is a scene where Pep Guardiola tells his players, “Guys if you want to be a top, top team you have to score fucking goals.”
