College Football week 10 betting preview

There are some weekends you just know are going to be outstanding in college football. Week 1 nowadays usually has a handful of marquee matchups. The last weekend of the regular season is full of mega-rivalries like Michigan-Ohio State.

The first Saturday of November also is annually very important because it’s when SEC West rivals LSU and Alabama face off, and they do this Saturday in Baton Rouge. The No. 1 Tide are 14.5-point favorites over the No. 4 Tigers. It’s the biggest that LSU has been a home underdog since 1997 – they won that game at +16.5 over No. 1 Florida.

Because LSU already has a loss, it has to win here to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive. Alabama, which clinches the West Division with a victory, probably still gets in with a close loss here assuming it wins out. The Tide have won their past seven against LSU, by an average of 13 points.

MGM Resorts’ new casinos allow it to survive ‘challenging’ Q3

Casino operator MGM Resorts claims it performed respectably in a “challenging” third quarter, although things would have been much less respectable without contributions from two new venues.

Figures released Tuesday show MGM’s overall revenue hitting $3b in the three months ending September 30, up 7% from the same period last year. But operating income was down 16.6% to $410.9m and net income slipped 2.6% to $142.9m.

MGM’s domestic resorts reported revenue down 1.5% to $2.23b, despite an extra $42.5m contributed by MGM Springfield, which opened in Massachusetts in late August. Overall domestic resorts earnings were down 12% to $627m, in part due to opening expenses surrounding MGM Springfield.

MGM’s Las Vegas Strip resorts were particularly hard hit, reporting hotel occupancy down two points year-on-year, as well as declines in table drop (-10.5%), table win (-1.4 points), slots handle (-2%), and revenue per available room (-3.9%).

Why the world's biggest lottery jackpot wasn't

The Mega Millions jackpot that had been announced as the biggest ever at $1.6 billion ended up being the second-biggest at $1.537 billion, raising questions about how lottery officials make estimates and whether they were influenced by a desire to claim the jackpot amount surpassed all others.Mega Millions, Jackpots, General Interest, Multi-State Game

SJM Holdings casino profit up nearly two-thirds

Macau casino operator SJM Holdings reported a nearly two-thirds rise in its third-quarter profits on strong gains across all gaming segments.

On Tuesday, SJM released a preview of its financial performance in the three months ending September 30, during which net gaming revenue improved 9.5% year-on-year to HK$8.33b (US$1.05b), adjusted earnings gained 26.7% to HK$919m and profits shot up 65.1% to HK$707m ($90.1m).

SJM’s VIP gaming revenue was up 6.6% to just over HK$5b despite a 0.14 point reduction in VIP win rate during the quarter (to a still above-average 3.04%). SJM’s VIP tables reported total chip sales up over 12% year-on-year to HK$166b.

But SJM’s good fortune wasn’t dependent on VIPs, as mass market table revenue rose 10.6% to HK$5.6b and even the lowly slot machine segment improved 13.7% to HK$285m.

EPL week 10 review: Man City return to the top after scrappy Wembley affair

Manchester City returns to the summit of the English Premier League after beating Spurs on a raggedy old Wembley pitch by a Riyad Mahrez goal to nil.

I used to be a philatelist.

I can’t remember where they all came from, but I had a few photo albums full of the things.

Collecting stamps wasn’t my only hobby. I also had a cardboard box full of Man Utd programs from the 60s and 70s. My Uncle Alan gave them to me, and it was around this time (82/83) that I got into football.
