Cherry has been granted eight gaming licences for online gaming and betting

Cherry AB (publ) – STO: CHER-B.ST – has today received confirmation that all of its licence applications for online gaming and betting have been approved by the Swedish Gambling Authority. Effective from 1 January 2019, eight brands within the Online Gaming business area will be able to offer games and betting in the Swedish market.

“Although, the licence applications have involved a considerable amount of work, we are convinced that the Swedish regulations provide better conditions for gaming operators, our customers as well as for us as a company and therefore also for our shareholders. Sweden is an important market and we intend to continue growing from our already strong position,” says Gunnar Lind, President and CEO of Cherry.

“ComeOn offers games to customers under various brands and we have chosen to apply for licences for our companies operating brands targeting the Swedish market,” says Lahcene Merzoug, Business Area Manager and President of ComeOn. “ComeOn currently holds gaming licences in several European countries and is therefore experienced in conducting operations in line with the Swedish requirements.”

In addition to its online casino operations, Cherry is one of a small number of operators currently offering land-based commercial gaming in Sweden. Cherry’s Restaurant Casino business area has been subject to permitting since inception in 1963 and, with a re-regulated Swedish gaming market, Cherry Spelglädje will be able to raise its stakes in table, card and dice games and to further expand its offering. Cherry Spelglädje has submitted more than 270 licence applications for land-based commercial gaming to the Swedish Gambling Authority, enabling it to replace its current gaming permits in the new year. Each licence is for a gaming venue, that is, premises in which gaming is arranged by Cherry Spelglädje.

Michigan legislators send online gambling bill to governor’s desk

Michigan is poised to become the fifth US state to approve intrastate online gambling following a last-minute legislative effort.

Late Thursday night, as the Michigan legislature looked to close out its 2018 session, the state House of Representatives’ HB 4926 online gambling bill – which was approved in June – suddenly appeared on the state Senate’s agenda. The bill was swiftly approved by a vote of 33-5 and sent back to the House, which reapproved the measure by a vote of 71-35.

The speed and relative ease with which the bill was approved was notable, given that Michigan’s casino industry is a mix of commercial and tribal operators that haven’t always seen eye-to-eye on this issue. So credit to state legislators who managed to successfully herd these stake-holding cats across the finish line.

Gaming tribes have long been wary of the state’s online proposals. The Michigan Lottery has been offering online draw tickets and instant win games since November 2014, a move that prompted some of the state’s gaming tribes to withhold revenue sharing payments to the state, on the grounds that the online lottery violated their gaming compacts.

Sweden plays Santa with 26 new gambling license approvals

Another couple dozen Swedish online gambling hopefuls got an early Christmas present from the country’s gambling regulator, which doled out 26 more gaming licenses before knocking off for the year.

On Friday, Sweden’s Lotteriinspektionen/Spelinspektionen gaming regulatory agency announced another 26 new online and land-based license approvals for companies authorized to commence operations when the liberalized gambling market officially kicks off on January 1.

The full list of approved licensees can be viewed here, but the new recipients include such notables as 888 Holdings, Betfair, Finland’s PAF and local lads Cherry AB – whose various brands snagged a total of eight license approvals.

The number of approved operators now stands at 57, leaving only a handful of applications yet to be approved. Lotteriinspektionen director-general Camilla Rosenberg said it was “gratifying” to know that Swedish gamblers will have no shortage of online options come the new year.

And so, for the past year our research and development team has been busy working on making the Blackjack that we at Spintec and all our partners are eager to try it out ourselves.”

The Stars Group beats $870m Kentucky lawsuit, hoists UFC belt

Online gambling operator The Stars Group (TSG) is – for the moment – off the hook for an $870m civil judgment imposed three years ago in the state of Kentucky.

On Friday, TSG announced that the Kentucky Court of Appeals had “reversed in its entirety” the preposterous $870m judgment that a Commonwealth of Kentucky judge imposed as punishment for PokerStars’ activities in the state prior to the brand’s US market exit in 2011.

The original judgment was issued in November 2015 by Franklin Circuit Court Judge Thomas Wingate, who ordered TSG – then known as Amaya Gaming – to pay $290m to the state for serving state residents without a state permission. The following month, Wingate trebled those damages to $870m (plus interest).

The state targeted a number of online gambling companies in this fashion using a 19th century statute that allowed individuals or entities to recoup unrelated third parties’ gambling losses. Some companies, such as Bwin.party (now GVC Holdings) chose the path of least resistance and cut the state an eight-figure check.

Melco Int’l opens second Cyprus ‘satellite’ casino in Larnaca

Melco International Development’s casino footprint in Cyprus continues to grow following the opening of its second ‘satellite’ gaming venue.

On Friday, the Cyprus Mail reported that Melco’s Cyprus Casinos (C2) subsidiary had opened its latest satellite gaming venue at the international airport in Larnaca, the third-largest city in the Republic of Cyprus.

The C2 Larnaca casino features 42 electronic gaming machines spread across two separate spaces, one of which is restricted to departing passengers who have already cleared airport security, while the other is located in the arrivals area and is accessible by all airport guests. Both areas are operational around the clock.

The exclusive casino concession that Melco was awarded in 2016 allows the company to open four satellite gaming venues, the first of which opened in Nicosia earlier this month. The Nicosia venue featured 50 slots and five gaming tables, despite the fact that the legislation was supposed to restrict these venues to slots only.
