Malta pulls plug on Neptune Entertainment gaming license

In an extremely surprising move, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced on February 7 that they were canceling the gaming license for Neptune Entertainment Limited. The move took effect immediately.

According to a press release issued by the MGA, Neptune Entertainment was required to cancel and cease all operations effective immediately. Also, the order was to be displayed on the company’s website effective immediately, informing all players that the gaming license authorization had been canceled.

This was a surprising move, and no explanation was provided by the gaming authority as to why the license had been canceled. They simply released a statement letting the public know that any operations associated with Neptune and its websites or other entities associated with the name were to cease operations if they were using the gaming authority’s license for operation.

No response was provided on the Neptune Entertainment website.

Playtech’s Kevin Kilminster: Don’t forget the entertainment

As I’ve noted before, in a previous life, I worked in customer service for an online gambling site. Whenever I heard another agent droning on, lifelessly talking to a player about their issue, I’d remind them that we’re not dull bureaucrats working for a telephone operation, we’re in gambling. This should be exciting and entertaining, for us and the customer.

It looks like Playtech Head of Live Casino Innovation Kevin Kilminster takes the same approach. He recently spoke with Gambling Insider about the state of the industry. He said:

“One of our biggest ambitions is entertainment. We are the entertainment industry; it’s forgotten. Everyone focuses on the money – it’s the last thing I think about. I want to make sure a player’s first click is as good as their last. So we really focus on the entertainment part.”

Kilminster sees a lot of innovation possible in the live casino space to vindicate that focus. As fewer and fewer online players are familiar with brick and mortar offerings, they can try something totally new. “There’s never any industry in the world where you’ve reached the pinnacle of how far you can innovate,” he said. “You just make sure what you’re doing is to the best standard it can be and you’re pushing the boundary. I think, at the moment, it’s at a good progressive state but who knows what’ll happen in the next five years?”

Lawsuit against the DOJ over the Wire Act gains more traction

If anyone is starting to get tired of hearing about the U.S. Federal Wire Act and the Department of Justice (DOJ), sorry – things are just getting rolling and there will be much more to follow. The lid has only been unscrewed a little and is about to be blown off in spectacular fashion.

In case anyone hasn’t heard about the most popular, and controversial, story in the U.S. sports gambling world, the DOJ recently backpedaled on a long-held opinion regarding the Wire Act, which, among other things, prevents interstate money transactions. The DOJ had previously asserted – almost nine years ago – that the legislation, as it applied to gambling activities, only considered sports gambling. This past January, however, it somehow managed to decide that it has been wrong all of this time and that the Wire Act applies to all forms of online gambling.

The outrage following the DOJ’s reversal was swift and wide-reaching. Many wondered how it would be possible for the top law enforcement department in the country to suddenly decide to change course on a topic so sensitive, coincidentally after sports gambling became legal across the U.S. The immediate reaction, which was based on certain assumptions and intuitive deductions, was that someone in the gambling industry – perhaps someone like outspoken online gambling opponent Sheldon Adelson – forced the DOJ to reverse its stance.

New Hampshire, through the New Hampshire Lottery, has already announced that it is suing “the U.S.A.,” along with U.S. Attorney General William Barr and the DOJ. Soon after that lawsuit was launched, New Jersey and Pennsylvania got onboard and, now Michigan is rallying for the cause, as well. The Michigan Lottery has filed an amicus brief, which gives it the right, if approved, to participate in the lawsuit.

South Korea could raise age for casino entry

Younger South Korean gamblers might be out of luck if a bill being considered by the country’s parliament finds enough support. Last week, legislation was submitted to the South Korean National Assembly that would raise the minimum age for entry into casinos from its current level of 19 to 21.

Kim Kwang-soo of the country’s Party for Democracy and Peace, along with nine other lawmakers, are backing the bill, which they say is necessary to help curb gambling addiction. It seeks to make changes to two articles of the Tourism Promotion Act (TPA) – Articles 22 and 28 – and would, if approved, apply to all casinos that are licensed under the TPA.

The changes don’t have wide-reaching implications for the nation’s youth, but could cause frustration among international gamblers. South Korea has 17 casinos, of which one, Kangwon Land, is open to South Korean gamblers. The others are strictly foreigner-only casinos.

Supporters of the bill assert that the changes are needed because there has been a rise in gambling addiction among South Korea’s youth. They point out that an age limit of 21 is similar to what is seen in Macau and Singapore, as well as in other popular gaming destinations throughout Asia.

Meet the iGA Start-Up Launchpad finalists at iGaming Asia Congress

There are so many reasons why the gambling industry just can’t miss this year’s edition of the iGaming Asia Congress, taking place at the Studio City in Macau from March 12 to 14.

The three-day conference is filled with an incredible speaker lineup. There will be pre-conference briefings on U.S. opportunities as well as setting up operations in Asia; in-depth roundtable discussions covering esports, Vietnam and cybercrime; plus delegates will get the latest industry updates in topics like sports betting, Japan, India, responsible gambling, big data and artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and blockchain, among others.

Also returning this year is the successful iGA Innovation Start-Up Launchpad, providing an opportunity for regional and global startups in the industry to get the attention of industry leaders, meet with peers, and more importantly, make new business contacts.

This year, the finalists for the second iGA Innovation Start-Up Launchpad has been narrowed down to three: Sinitic, Warbler Gaming, and Luckbox.

MGM Resorts now official partner to the Boston Red Sox

The melding of two long-separated industries – gambling and professional sports – continues. According to a company press release, MGM Resorts is now the “official and exclusive resort casino” of the Boston Red Sox, winners of the 2018 MLB World Series. The move comes only a few short months after MLB signed a deal with MGM that saw the casino operator become the league’s “official gaming partner.”

Through the Red Sox partnership, MGM will have a marketing position behind home plate, on Red Sox radio and other media outlets controlled by the team. It will also receive exclusive access to “one-of-a-kind fan experiences” at Fenway Park. In addition, MGM Springfield will host various promotions throughout the year and will be the location for the Baseball Winter Weekend event, an event organized by the Red Sox that is held each January. That event includes rubbing elbows with Red Sox leaders, photo and autograph opportunities with Red Sox players and a number of round-table discussions on baseball-related themes.

MGM Chairman and CEO Jim Murren stated of the deal, “We are excited to enter into this historic partnership with the Boston Red Sox. Combining the two iconic brands of the Red Sox and MGM Resorts will create a new one-of-a-kind fan experience for baseball fans unique to not only New England and MGM Springfield, but the rest of the country. We look forward to continuing our work and partnerships in the world of professional sports and building on our success as a worldwide entertainment leader.”

Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy added, “This is such a natural partnership for our two brands. MGM has set the standard in the hospitality and entertainment industry and their recent expansion into the Commonwealth makes them a clear partner. We are thrilled to welcome them to the Red Sox family and look forward to a long collaboration.”

New Zealand’s SkyCity to introduce online casino before year’s end

New Zealand-based SkyCity Entertainment Group is going to introduce a real-money online casino before the end of the year. Given that its home country does not have any regulations governing online gambling, the company doesn’t plan on basing the platform in New Zealand, or in Australia where the activity is also not permitted. This means that the gambling site will most likely be established somewhere in Europe.

SkyCity has been contemplating an online gaming platform for some time and the company’s CEO, Graeme Stephens, announced last August that the casino operator was ready to move forward with its plans. While not yet having decided where to offer the new platform, SkyCity spokesman Colin Espiner indicates that Europe is a “fair summisation, given that’s where most online gaming is based.”

Just because the platform isn’t based in New Zealand doesn’t mean that Kiwis won’t be able to access the site. SkyCity indicates that it won’t offer at-home marketing, but there’s nothing stopping local gamblers from hearing about the site via word of mouth (or through media outlets that routinely provide casino and gambling coverage).

Only casino-related games will be offered through the portal – no sports gambling. SkyCity doesn’t anticipate a huge following, but asserts that it could produce as much as NZ$40 million (US$27.35 million) in tax revenue for New Zealand. However, since online gaming isn’t legal in the country, those funds might not be accepted by the government. In this case, SkyCity is prepared to give them to charitable organizations in New Zealand.

Carl Icahn now holds largest stake in Caesars

If there were any doubt as to the intentions of billionaire Carl Icahn for Caesars Resorts, that doubt is quickly being erased. After purchasing 10% of the casino giant last month, Icahn has upped his stake and is now the largest shareholder of the company. He is undoubtedly preparing the company to be put up for sale.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from last Friday, the 83% serial investor announced that he now owns 15.53% of Caesars. In a separate announcement last week, Caesars acknowledged that it had given Icahn a couple of sports on the company’s board of directors, and that Courtney Mather, James Nelson and Icahn Enterprises CEO Keith Cozza had replaced three members on the 12-person team.

In taking control of more than 10% of the casino company, Icahn is now obligated to obtain a gaming license in Caesars’ home state of Nevada. It wouldn’t be the first time he has held a license and, given his position in the community, he shouldn’t have any difficulty in seeking approval for a new license.

The potential sale of Caesars is coming more into focus each day. Icahn, as well as others, has asserted that the best course of action for the company would be for it to find a new owner and Icahn purchased, and increased, his stake in order to help push the issue further. He said last week that “the best path forward for Caesars requires a strategic process to sell or merge the company” and that it would “further develop its already strong regional presence.”

Churchill Downs completes two new acquisitions

Casino and racetrack operator Churchill Downs is busy working to grab as much of the U.S. gambling market as it can. Following the Supreme Court’s decision on PASPA last year, the company has been seeking out new acquisitions and those efforts have picked up steam this year. Churchill Downs stated last month that it was poised to acquire a casino property in Illinois, which has now been successfully completed. It has also completed the acquisition of another property in Pennsylvania.

Last week, the company announced that it had consummated the purchase of the Rivers Casino Des Plaines in Illinois. That move came ahead of the anticipated launch of sports gambling in the state and marked a deeper expansion inside Illinois borders. Churchill Downs already owns and operates the Arlington International Racecourse located in Chicago.

That deal was completed after the Illinois Gaming Board unanimously approved the acquisition, 4-0. Churchill Downs, which initially said they wanted to purchase at least 50.1% of the racetrack’s parent company, Midwest Gaming Holdings, and ultimately paid about $407 million to purchase 62%.

Sports gambling in Illinois isn’t always looked upon favorably by lawmakers. Past attempts to introduce legislation for the activity have meet with brick walls, but that could be changing this year. The state’s new governor, J. B. Pritzker, is a fan of sports gambling as a means to attract more revenue to the state’s wallet and has already added sports gambling to the budget plan for Illinois for the next fiscal year.
