ESPN to introduce new sports gambling show

Sports gambling continues to push deeper into the gambling industry across the globe and the leading sports television network, ESPN, is putting its weight behind the activity. It has announced the launch of a new sports gambling show, the Daily Wager, which covers industry news and information.

The show kicks off on March 11 and will be aired Monday through Friday. It is set to fill the 6 PM Eastern Time timeslot and will also be livestreamed on the ESPN app. Daily Wager will be filmed at ESPN’s studios in Bristol, Connecticut and will be hosted by ESPN’s sports betting analyst Doug Kezirian, the host of the “Behind the Bets with Doug Kezirian” podcast. The show will reportedly include sports gambling analysis and data, but is not designed to handicap sporting events.

According to ESPN Executive VP and Executive Editor of Studio Production Norby Williamson, “ESPN’s mission is to serve sports fans. The sports betting environment has changed and interest is increasing at unprecedented levels. ESPN is going to have a strong and vibrant presence across our platforms, and the launch of Daily Wager is the next step in what has already been underway for some time.”

ESPN began including sports gambling broadcasts not long after the U.S. Supreme Court reversed PASPA last May. It offers a number of podcasts and digital content, including its “Bad Beats” show, a segment that centers on some of the biggest losses and which is included on the network’s SportsCenter.

PH Resorts delays Philippines casino project

Just six weeks ago, it was confirmed that PH Resorts Group Holdings Inc (PHR) would begin an exciting $350 million project that would build two elaborate resort casinos in the Philippines. The company had gained approval from the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission to begin the project and to begin follow-up offerings that would enable them to be able to raise the capital needed to start the project. Now that project looks in serious jeopardy.

In a press release issued by PHR on Friday, the company confirmed that they would be delaying the offering, looking to find alternative options to raise the capital needed. In the statement, the company explained that they were looking for “more strategically suitable alternative options” that would better suit the funding needs of the project.

In late January, PHR was given approval by the SEC to begin the funding venture. The company intended to sell 1.79 billion common shares with an additional 268 million being available if needed. They had even gone as far as to reach an agreement with the China Banking Corporation to underwrite the offer.

Things looked to be moving along with great efficiency, especially after PHR announced in late December that the company had increased its capital stock to 8 billion common shares from 500 million. The SEC had approved the move earlier in December with PH Resorts controlling nearly 4.5 billion of the shares themselves. This even led to the company changing their corporate name from Philippine H2O Ventures to PH Resorts Group.

Casino titan Sheldon Adelson being treated for cancer

Casino titan Sheldon Adelson is undergoing treatment for cancer, raising questions about the future of his Las Vegas Sands casino empire.

On Thursday, the Nevada Independent quoted a Sands attorney saying Adelson was in “dire” health. The quote was made during a Clark County District Court hearing in the latest go-round of Hong Kong businessman Richard Suen’s 15-year quest to get Sands to pay him the millions he claims to be owed for helping Sands secure a Macau casino license.

Adelson didn’t participate in Sands’ Q4 earnings call on January 23, as Sands president Rob Goldstein claimed Adelson was “a little bit under the weather.” On Monday, Sands’ attorneys told the court that Adelson had “not participated in the company proceedings in terms of being physically present” at the company’s Las Vegas HQ since around last Christmas.

Sands spokesman Ron Reese later issued a statement saying Adelson was “still dealing with certain side effects from medication he is taking for the treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.” However, Reese added that, while the treatment had “restricted [Adelson’s] availability to travel or keep regular office hours,” Adelson was still capable of “fulfilling his duties as [Sands] chairman and CEO.”

Dept. of Justice delays Wire Act enforcement until mid-June

The US Department of Justice is further delaying enforcement of its new opinion on the scope of the Wire Act to give online gambling operators more time to bring their operations into compliance.

On Thursday, online gambling analyst Chris Grove reported that the DOJ planned to extend the April 15 deadline for enforcing its new Wire Act opinion by a further 60 days. On Friday, a DOJ spokesperson confirmed to GamblingCompliance that the enforcement deadline has been pushed back to the middle of June.

The DOJ’s new opinion, which was made public in January, views the Wire Act as applying to most forms of online gambling, not just sports betting. The vaguely worded and legally sketchy opinion has called into question the legality of intrastate online gambling and lottery operations that temporarily reroute data in the course of their transactions, along with the payment processing that allows these sites to conduct business with gambling customers.

In February, the New Hampshire Lottery Commission and the state’s attorney general filed a legal challenge of the DOJ’s new opinion. The state’s online lottery platform provider NeoPollard Interactive filed its own challenge the same day, and this week saw a third suit filed by the iDEA Growth trade group.
