Casino crime in Singapore not linked to syndicates

In 2010, with a certain amount of trepidation, Singapore opened two casino resorts. There were concerns over rampant crime appearing in the casinos, most of which was predicted to be led by organized crime, but the truth is apparently more mundane than the hype. According to Josephine Teo, Singapore’s Second Minister for Home Affairs, there have only been a “very few” casino-related crimes that could be tied to organized crime in the past nine years.

Teo was addressing Parliament on Monday when she made her comments, adding that Singapore has gaming-related crime “under control.” She stated, “Since 2010 – ever since we started the tracking, when the [casinos’] operations commenced – there have been fewer than 20 in total [criminal matters] that are traced to syndicates. If you look at the amounts of money involved, it was between SGD14,000 [US$10,272] to SGD1.3 million [$954.460].”

Despite a low amount of organized crime, neither the ministry nor the casinos are letting down their guard, asserted Tao. She told parliamentary members, “In this instance, the [casino] operators obviously have an interest – they have fiduciary interest, and so they are minded to work with the police to stamp out the possible infiltration of organised crime.”

Las Vegas Sands, through its Marina Bay Sands resort, and Genting Singapore with Resorts World Sentosa are the only two gambling venues allowed in Singapore under the current regulatory framework. The two will continue their control for a little while longer, as they have agreed to a combined $6.6-million fee that will keep their duopoly intact until 2030.

Three arrested in Macau after death of gambler

Macau has done a lot to try to clean up the city and remove illegal loan sharks. However, to think that the activity will be completely eliminated is naïve and unrealistic. There will always be those that lurk in the shadows, ready to prey on others. Sometimes, these encounters have deadly consequences and this was the unfortunate fate for one Chinese gambler recently found dead in Macau.

According to police, the gambler was found murdered in a guesthouse on the Macau peninsula last Friday. His demise reportedly came at the hands of three suspected loan sharks to whom the gambler owed about $6,373. The trio of bandits was arrested after one of them decided he couldn’t remain silent and went to police.

The victim borrowed the money and lost it all the same day, May 1. He was then taken to the guesthouse in the Nam Van district, where he was reportedly confined and beaten. According to a police spokesperson, Leng Kam Lon, “[the victim’s] three creditors have, several times, used their belts and slippers to beat him… in order to force him to repay the [gambling] debt.” He added that the gambler had been “gagged so that he could not call for help” and that the suspects “did a video shooting of their beating process using their cell phones, and sent the video clip to the victim’s family hurrying them to repay the debt.”

The three now face possible charges of aggravated kidnapping, organized crime and illegal money lending and some type of manslaughter or murder charges. The kidnapping offense alone carries a penalty of five to 15 years and there is no death penalty for murder in Macau. The maximum sentence a criminal can be given is 30 years.

Morgan Stanley expects VIP revenue in Macau to recover next quarter

The drop in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Macau is nothing more than a temporary glitch that doesn’t have local authorities concerned. It should correct itself in the near future and Morgan Stanley expects next quarter to see an increase in at least one segment, VIP gambling.

The banking and financial analyst firm indicates in a recent note that VIP gaming will most likely recuperate and has not been as impacted by cannibalization in other markets as many have asserted. Praveen Choudhary, a Morgan Stanley analyst, explained in his note, “Cambodia and the Philippines VIP business have grown significantly in the last two years and might give an impression that they are taking share from Macau. However, if we add Singapore, Australia and Saipan, we realise that the percentage of VIP revenue from regions (other than Macau) has remained fairly stable at around 30 percent of the total VIP revenue in Macau. Thus, one cannot blame overseas leakage for recent Macau VIP revenue growth slowdown.”

He further stated, “The majority of VIP gaming revenue in the Philippines is proxy betting, which is not allowed in Macau and thus it is not a result of cannibalisation. We conclude that Macau VIP revenue could remain resilient despite leakage to ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] countries and should recover in second half 2019.” Proxy betting refers to an activity that has one individual placing bets for another in a remote location, usually over the phone or through instant message instructions.

Choudhary adds that the slowdown seen this year was, in part, a result of a liquidity shortage in the second half of last year. He states, “Some of the liquidity indicators have started turning around recently, with China M1 reading for March being 4.6 percent, better than the reading in January of 0.4 percent. Based on our analysis, China liquidity indicators lead Macau VIP revenue growth by around six months, and thus we expect VIP recovery to be visible by the third quarter of 2019.”

Treasure Island wants Caesars’ Strip properties

A Las Vegas casino company has jumped in and announced that it wants the properties help by Caesars Entertainment along the Las Vegas Strip, should the company decide to make a deal. Treasure Island would welcome the opportunity to purchase the properties from Caesars as the company potentially looks to sell its assets, although it’s unclear whether or not the company’s properties would be sold only as a single unit, or if it would break apart the portfolio.

Carl Icahn, who recently became the largest shareholder of Caesars, is leading the charge for the company to find a new owner. He became the largest shareholder to make that goal happen and there is already interest from other casino operations, such as Golden Nugget and its owner, Tilman Fertitta.

Treasure Island wants to get its hands on Caesars Palace, the iconic Caesars property, along with Harrah’s and Paris and a few others under the company’s control. The company’s CEO, Phil Ruffin, says that Caesars has “great locations” and is willing to spend up to $1 billion in cash for the Strip properties. He added that he would take on debt if necessary to consummate a deal. Ruffin indicated that Treasure Island currently has no debt, giving it easy access to lines of credit.

The executive points out that the Strip properties that average between $200 million and $300 million each year in cash flow are of higher interest. Analysts assert that Strip venues should be able to sell for ten times their annual cash flow amount, which means Ruffin needs to be prepared to cough up a considerably higher amount if he wants to be taken seriously.

Scout Gaming has entered into an agreement with platform provider Digitain. The agreement stipulates the distribution of Scout Gaming’s game products. Digitain is a privately held company providing Omni-channel iGaming software solutions to the online, mobile and land-based verticals. Digitain has over 1,000 employees, 55+ partners worldwide, and more than 400 land-based bet shops worldwide.

“Digitain is among one of the larger platform providers and will make a great potential contribution to our network. This clearly states that Scout Gaming is the first-hand choice when it comes to Fantasy related products, comments Scout Gaming’s CEO, Andreas Ternström.

“We are continuously looking to improve our product offering and have found that Scout Gaming has a proven capability of providing Fantasy Sports games with a global network and therefore is experienced partner to launch and expand Digitain’s Fantasy Sports offering. Scout Gaming’s Fantasy Sports solution will be provided along with our in-house developed and managed sportsbook solution”, comments Digitain’s CCO, Suren Khachatryan.

Scout Gaming’s products are expected to be integrated no later than the third quarter this year. Due to the uncertain timetable of the up-taking of our products with Digitain’s operators, Scout Gaming is unable to guide on what impact the deal will have on its 2019 revenues. Scout Gaming’s revenue is on a long-term basis dependent on the end user’s activity on Scout Gamings products.

World Series odds update: May betting futures

The longest drought of winning the World Series in Major League Baseball belongs to the snake-bitten Cleveland Indians, whose last title was in 1948. The Tribe were oh-so close to ending that in 2016 as they took a 3-1 lead on the Chicago Cubs in the Fall Classic but lost an epic Game 7 at home as the Cubs ended an even longer championship drought.

Cleveland opened this season as a heavy favorite to win a fourth straight AL Central title, but even reaching the postseason could be a challenge now that ace pitcher Corey Kluber is out indefinitely. He suffered a broken right (pitching) forearm last week when he took a line drive off it on a batted ball (estimated at 102 mph) by the Marlins’ Brian Anderson.

True, Kluber was struggling this year with a 2-3 record and 5.80 ERA, but he’s a two-time Cy Young winner and leads all American League pitchers in wins over the past five seasons. It’s the last thing the Indians need because they already are without fellow starting pitcher Mike Clevinger until perhaps July with a back injury, and the team isn’t hitting a lick. The Indians are built to win with their pitching. They are now +2000 to win the World Series.

adventures.io launches affiliate mastermind houseboating retreat

adventures.io has re-launched their website and also announced their first networking event which is simply called adventures1. The first adventures business retreat will take place near Bobcaygeon in the Kawartha Lakes in Canada. The first event runs from Monday June 17th to Friday June 21st, 2019.

“The main idea of adventures  is to combine the networking benefits of a conference with travel and tourism. It makes sense for me to do the first event on a houseboat where after years of sharing pics of my houseboat adventures on social media, I had a lot of people say they wanted to come along and try it. Now they get that chance. Although people might want to come for a relaxing trip, I want everyone that attends to walk away with more ideas for their business and a chance to get peer review on their projects where they might not have that time or opportunity at any other conference. adventures1 is a business retreat and essentially a mastermind group on water. The business topics that will be discussed at the event will all be determined by the people that attend and what they want help with. ” John Wright, co-founder of adventures.io & StatsDrone

adventures1 in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada

The first first event will take place near Bobcaygeon which is a small town in Ontario, Canada. The event is hosted on a few houseboats through Happy Days Houseboats where these houseboats will travel to different locations every day throughout the Kawartha Lakes region. The week long event will take guests through Pigeon Lake, Buckhorn Lake, Lower Buckhorn Lake, Stoney Lake, Burleigh Falls and in Bobcaygeon. The lakes are part of the Trent-Severn Waterway and the tour will pass through a few locks along the way.

NHL herald ICE North America as the place to develop sports sponsorship’s evolution

Following the signing of the first commercial partnerships between sports bodies and gambling brands, both sectors are primed to build on the potential of sports sponsorship – a topic which is of keen interest to Keith Wachtel, Chief Business Officer and Executive Vice President, NHL.

Speaking ahead of the first edition of ICE VOX North America (May 14-15, Boston, MA, USA) where he will be appearing on a distinguished panel alongside other key names from the worlds of sport and betting, he said: “The NHL has added three major sponsors in the shape of William Hill, FanDuel and MGM Resorts since the repeal of PASPA, and continues to drive its aim of providing an innovative and sustainable betting landscape going forward.

“While it’s too early to determine fan betting behavior, since the launch of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18, the handle on the sport of hockey is up over 100 per cent, which is a good indication of more opportunities to come. The NHL has taken a progressive approach to sports betting, working directly with the industry and focusing on commercialization and innovative opportunities for fan engagement. We’re focused on being at the forefront of innovation and developing technology – including our puck and player tracking product – which provide more data and tremendous insights to the game.”

He added: “State-by-state legislation, data requirements and opportunities for broader fan engagement will be the main talking points in Boston in my opinion. It’s been almost a year since the Supreme Court overturned PASPA and we’ve seen the sports betting landscape change and evolve at a rapid pace. Bringing together experts from every facet of the sports gaming industry in a vibrant setting like Boston provides an ideal opportunity to network, share learnings from the past year and strategize for the future.

Fans of Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United can leave their padded cells. The unknown has become known. Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd, had jelly beans for legs in the Champions League home straight while Chelsea got the job done.

Since losing to Everton on 17 March, Chelsea has only lost once (to Liverpool) while the other horses in the Champions League continued to stumble and fall.

Chelsea’s Champions League qualification was confirmed after another abysmal weekend for Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd with Spurs losing to Bournemouth, and both Arsenal and Man Utd drawing with lowly Brighton and Huddersfield, while Chelsea beat Watford at Stamford Bridge.

The Triton Poker Super High Roller Series returns to the Maestral Resort and Casino in Montenegro, and Steve O’Dwyer wins the first event for HK$3,708,784 after beating Isaac Haxton in heads-up action.

Moments ago, Paul Phua, the co-founder of the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series, stood in front of former Triton Champions, people of the ilk of John Juanda, Jason Koon and Mikita Badziakouski, and talked eloquently and emotionally about his plans to turn the Triton brand into something special.

Steve O’Dwyer stood behind him, a mere two hours after becoming a champion himself, and if this brand is not yet special, then the poker world had better prepare themselves for an assault to the five senses the likes of which they have never seen before.

The Triton Poker Super High Roller Series is in the Maestral Resort & Casino, Budva, Montenegro. Phua called it his ‘favourite stop’, and said it was ‘refreshing’ that so many people, players and staff alike, had brought their families.
