US sports fans in for a lot of betting pitches this fall

US football fans are in for an unprecedented deluge of betting-related broadcasting this fall, from dedicated programs talking odds and lines to endless commercial pitches.

As the clock counts down to a new NFL season – assuming it’s not sacked for a loss by COVID-19 – bettors in states where such activity has been legalized are taking to social media to vent about the inescapable betting-related promos from local licensees.

Some viewers claim at least one, and often more than one, wagering promo features in every single ad break on some sports-focused outlets. The nonstop pitches are causing some viewers to have unfortunate flashbacks to 2015, when today’s betting leaders DraftKings and FanDuel ran (literally) 214 hours’ worth of daily fantasy sports promos in the month of September alone.

Among the more outlandish/irritating spots features Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw, Fox Sports personalities and now brand ambassadors for Flutter Entertainment’s Fox Bet brand. The two released a promo that really needs to be seen to be believed, with lots of shouting, frequent yelling of the word ‘boom’ and more fake lightning than Back to the Future.

UK watchdog shames gambling ops for ads on kid-friendly sites

The UK’s advertising watchdog says only junk food manufacturers are airing more inappropriate ads on kid-focused online media than gambling operators.

On Wednesday, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) issued its latest report on age-restricted advertising that somehow eludes the censors and finds its way onto websites that attract an audience with “a disproportionately high” number of children — defined as over one-quarter of the audience — which is a violation of the UK’s Advertising Code.

The first three-month phase of the ASA’s year-long project involved over 50 YouTube channels and other websites. The study employed “CCTV-style” monitoring tools aimed at detecting online advertising related to gambling, alcohol, e-cigarettes/tobacco, slimming/weight control products and edibles deemed to be high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS).

The ASA found 159 examples of age-restricted ads in violation of the Code, of which 70 ads involved gambling. These adds were run by only four gambling operators and appeared on eight different websites.

World Series ‘Big 50’ event sees million-dollar guarantee doubled

The latest winner of a World Series of Poker bracelet, Huahuan Feng, didn’t just win any WSOP bracelet, he won a ‘Big 50’ bracelet, which meant he only paid $50 to enter the event and took home the top prize of $211,282.

As if that achievement was not astonishing enough, Feng also won a package to the World Series of Poker Europe worth $12,000 – not a bad return for what a cockney might call a ‘bullseye’.

Ploughing through 44,575 other entries, Feng of course didn’t have to eliminate all of them. With a $2 million prizepool instead of the initial $1 million put up as a guaranteed prizepool, there were over 4,000 players in the draw for a Day 2 seat and they included GGPoker ambassador Daniel ‘Kid Poker’ Negreanu, the most successful tournament poker player of all time in Chris Moorman and Jack Salter among others.

While Moorman would be among the many who busted before the money bubble, messrs Salter ($230) and Negreanu ($611) both cashed, along with hundreds of others. Once at the final table, Thailand’s Wade Gillett busted first, in 9th place for $15,302. He was followed by British player Dean Lipscombe, before two Chinese players departed with Xiong Huang (7th for $29,906) and Di Lu (6th for $41,809) both departing.

Vietnam casino revenue up 60% in 2019 thanks to local gamblers trial

Some of Vietnam’s casino operators may catch a break on their financial commitments after gaming revenue and contributions to state coffers surged higher.

Figures released this week by Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance show the country’s eight operational casinos generated revenue of VND2.5t (US$107.4m) in 2019, from which the casinos contributed VND1.34t to the state budget.

The 2019 revenue figure was 60% higher than 2018’s VND1.56t, which was in turn 31% higher than 2017, the first year that Vietnam approved a decree allowing a trial of lifting the prohibition on local residents gambling in casinos.

The Corona Resort & Casino on the island of Phu Quoc in Kieng Giang province was selected to serve as the locals gaming guinea pig starting in January 2019. The Corona attracted a total of 105,200 guests last year, of which 47,400 (45%) were Vietnamese citizens. The Corona’s 2019 revenue hit VND1.43t, giving it nearly 60% of the overall market.

Sporttrade to bring first online sports betting exchange to New Jersey

New Jersey’s online gambling market is poised to welcome its first sports betting exchange, although it’s unclear whether the state’s limited number of bettors will provide the necessary liquidity to make the site a success.

On Tuesday, Rhode Island-based casino operator Twin River Worldwide Holdings (TRWH) announced that it had struck a partnership with Philadelphia-based startup Sporttrade to piggyback on TRWH’s New Jersey online sports betting rights.

In April, TRWH agreed to acquire three casinos from soon-to-be-wedded Caesars Entertainment and Eldorado Resorts, including Bally’s Atlantic City. While that deal is still awaiting formal approval, it will give TRWH the right to operate three online sports betting ‘skins’, one of which it intends to offer to Sporttrade’s proprietary exchange product.

Sporttrade CEO Alexander Kane said his company’s “revolutionary” product would succeed by “applying capital markets technology and market structure” to the US betting market. Kane promised customers “a first-of-its-kind sports betting venue that will be fair, liquid, and transparent” as well as offering “significantly lower costs than traditional sportsbooks.”
