Two of the NBA’s first-round Western Conference playoff series could wrap up on Thursday, and the first Eastern Conference semifinal game also will be played from the Orlando bubble.

At 4 p.m. ET, the Utah Jazz try for a second straight contest to eliminate the Denver Nuggets as they meet in Game 6 of their series, with the Jazz sitting as 2-point favorites. Denver stayed alive and ended a three-game losing streak by rallying from a 15-point deficit and winning 117-107 on Tuesday behind 42 points from Jamal Murray – he’s averaging 30.8 points in the series.

Murray’s 33 points in the second half tied for the most by any player facing elimination in the past 20 postseasons. Utah’s Donovan Mitchell, who has two 50-point games in the series, was “held” to 30. Denver is 6-2 ATS in the past eight meetings overall.

West Virginia’s iGaming, sports betting market to get more competitive

West Virginia’s sports betting and online casino market is about to get a lot more competitive.

On Wednesday, the West Virginia Lottery Commission, which oversees all gaming activity in the state, learned that the Greenbrier Resort and its BetMGM partner planned to launch the state’s second online casino app before the sun went down.

BetMGM, the joint venture of casino operator MGM Resorts and UK-listed gambling giant GVC Holdings, launched online sports betting with the Greenbrier this January. The Greenbrier also has a sports betting pact with Flutter Entertainment’s FanDuel brand, which was the first WV betting operator to launch one year ago.

DraftKings launched West Virginia’s first online casino in mid-July courtesy of its partnership with Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino at Charlestown Races. The WV Lottery Commission recently reported that the first month of online casino play resulted in turnover of $37.2m and revenue of nearly $825k.

Betfred bids for South Africa’s troubled racing operator Phumelela

UK bookmakers Betfred have confirmed rumors that they are interested in acquiring troubled South African race and sports betting operator Phumelela Gaming & Leisure.

On Tuesday, Betfred threw a wobbler into Phumelela’s ‘business rescue plan,’ which followed the South African company’s filing for a form of bankruptcy protection in May. Phumelela has been teetering on the financial brink for over a year after regulatory changes deprived it of a crucial share of race betting winning levies in the province of Gauteng.

While Phumelela has sketched out a rescue plan that involves the sale of certain assets and operations to Mary Oppenheimer Daughters (MOD) – a fund backed by one of the country’s wealthiest families, also one of Phumelela’s largest creditors – Betfred’s offer involves “all assets of Phumelela, and not merely some of the assets as contemplated in the offer made by [MOD].”

Moreover, while MOD has already provided Phumelela with a R100m (US$5.9m) lifeline and has promised to provide an additional R550m, Betfred’s all-assets offer is for between R875m-R925m. Betfred has also promised to preserve all Phumelela’s business units and retain all staff.
