Danny McDonagh, president of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, remains under house arrest in China following last month’s abrupt shutdown of the 2015 Nanjing Millions.
The APPT event had attracted 2,300 participants over its first four days but Chinese authorities shut things down on April 17, two days before the tournament was scheduled to conclude. The reasons behind the shutdown have yet to be fully explained, although a notice pinned to the door of the shuttered Wutaishan Sports Center claimed tournament organizers were “suspected of illegal gambling.”
China’s state broadcaster CCTV subsequently referred to the tournament as a “criminal event” while PokerStars spokesman Eric Hollreiser issued a statement saying tourney organizers had “decided to postpone the event in order to address questions from local authorities.”
On Sunday, Australia’s Herald Sun reported that McDonagh and two other individuals were still under house arrest in China and facing potential three-year jail terms for illegal gambling. McDonagh’s friend Sean Callander told the paper that no one had been able to communicate with McDonagh since the arrest. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it stood ready to provide consular assistance if needed.
