Novomatic, Kambi team on omni-channel sports betting lottery technology

Austrian gaming outfit Novomatic Group and Swedish online betting technology provider Kambi Sports Solutions are teaming up to help state-run lotteries diversify their product offering.

On Tuesday, Novomatic subsidiary Novomatic Lottery Solutions (NLS) and Kambi Group announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to fuse Novomatic’s lottery platform with Kambi’s sports betting technology to provide a full-service, omni-channel gaming solution to government-regulated lotteries.

The dynamic duo will showcase their new service – which will operate under the co-branded ‘NLS Sports Betting – Powered by Kambi’ moniker – at next month’s World Lottery Summit in Singapore.

The omni-channel product will place particular emphasis on interactive gaming, an area that most state lotteries have yet to fully embrace but one they need to adopt if they wish to retain the interest of younger demographics who have shown less interest in traditional lottery products.

After 39 draws, Vietnam’s new lottery finally has first jackpot winner

Vietnam is celebrating the first ever jackpot winner of the country’s new computerized lottery.

In July, Malaysia’s Berjaya Corp and Vietnam’s state-run lottery firm Vietlott launched the new Mega 6/45 lottery product in Vietnam. But despite holding three draws per week, the jackpot went 39 straight draws without a big winner, generating both anticipation and frustration among lottery players.

But that losing streak ended on Sunday, after a farmer in Tra Vinh province found himself holding a ticket bearing all six lucky numbers. By that point, the original prize of VND 12b (US $536k) had swollen to just over VND 92b, or around $4.11m.

Tuoi Tre News reported that the lucky farmer claimed he bought the winning ticket – for the list price of VND 10k (45¢) – on his way home from work on Sunday morning, then discovered his windfall while watching the televised draw with his family over Sunday dinner. The eager farmer chucked his fork and went to claim his prize at Vietlott’s HQ that same night.

Republic of Georgia seeks operator to run lottery, extend reach to online, mobile

The Republic of Georgia is looking for someone to manage its national lottery and extend the lottery’s reach into the online and mobile spheres.

This week, Georgia’s Ministry of Finance announced it was accepting proposals from companies interested in a 10-year exclusive license to organize and conduct lottery operations in Georgia. Interested bidders must submit their proposals (along with a US $5m bank guarantee) by Dec. 12, 2016.

The tender documentation states that the winning bidder will be determined by its “understanding of the Georgian lottery market.” The winner must also have a history of operating a commercial lottery, with proof that these operations generated sales of not less than GEL 350m (US $149m) over the past five years.

Another criteria for determining the winning bidder will be “who will offer the highest payment” to the state budget. The government expects the operator to make quarterly payments equal to 8% of total lottery sales, with a minimum payment of $5m.

Italian court orders lottery operator to repay scratch player who never won

A court has ordered Italy’s National Lottery operator to reimburse a scratch card player who failed to win a prize in a year’s worth of play.

On Monday, Italian media outlet Il Messaggero reported that a local court in Vallo della Lucania, a small town in the province of Salerno, had ordered National Lottery operator Lottomatica to pay approximately €3k to a 29-year-old man who claims to have spent that sum buying 255 scratch and win cards over the past year without winning anything.

The judge who heard the man’s tale of woe declared that the scratch tickets displayed no information regarding the probability of winning a prize nor any warning about the potentially addictive properties of lottery tickets.

Italian court rulings have established that lottery scratchcards must include such warning messages, or, if the card is too small to adequately display these messages, it must direct players to a website containing the full message.

Mississippi Gov. says he's open to discussing state lottery

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said he “would be open to a general discussion regarding a statewide lottery,” marking the first time in nearly 30 years that a Mississippi governor has said anything about a state lottery that didn’t indicate they’d smack it quickly and hard with their veto stamp.Starting a Lottery, Mississippi, Government
