FanDuel rebrands; Massachusetts says yes to DFS, no to online lottery

Daily fantasy sports operator FanDuel has announced a corporate rebrand ahead of the upcoming NFL season.

On Monday, FanDuel unveiled its new look, which incorporates a new color scheme, website redesign and a logo featuring a shield icon, an “age old athletic emblem” that the company says is intended to “pay homage to history’s strongest leagues, teams and competitors.”

The rebrand also includes a new FanDuel Bill of Rights, essentially a stripped down, legalese-light terms of service that details the consumer protections the company formalized following last year’s ‘insider trading’ scandal at rival DraftKings.

These rights include bans on third-party scripting tools, separation of player funds from operating capital, banning play by DFS staff (whether they work at FanDuel or one of its rivals) and identifying DFS sharps so newbies know to steer clear from heads-up contests.

Illinois seeks new owner for beleaguered lottery

In a last ditch attempt at privatization, Illinois has opened the bidding process for private firms to manage its lottery business – which is considered to be the state’s bread and butter in funding schools and for road and bridge repair and construction.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Gov. Bruce Rauner is looking for a new firm that will handle the state lottery, which had recently become a national embarrassment because it lacked the statutory authority to pay big winners.

Northstar Lottery Services, which bagged the award to manage day-to-day operations of the lottery in exchange for a small cut of the profit, is set to exit on January 1, 2017 as a result of legal impasse over the state’s lottery policies that had greatly affected its revenues.

“Our Illinois Lottery has been very poorly run and has failed to meet expectations for years,” Rauner said, hoping that a deal can be reached with a private company on or before January 2017.

Michigan Lottery website hands out second $1m prize in 17 months

The Michigan Lottery’s website has given out its second $1m prize in 17 months.

On July 13, a woman won $1m playing the Powerball lottery from a ticket she purchased through the Michigan Lottery’s website. This marked the first time any Michigan Lottery player had won a seven-figure Powerball jackpot online.

The win came 17 months after the Lottery celebrated its first $1m online payday, which came when a woman purchased an instant win scratch game via the website. The online sales have proven popular with Michigan residents, generating an extra $147m for the state since the site launched in November 2014.

To capitalize on the media attention, the Lottery announced it would give all new online customers a $5 free-play bonus offer ahead of Wednesday’s Powerball drawing.

Survey pokes holes in theory that low-income Americans are lottery junkies

As Wednesday’s PowerBall jackpot tops $400m, a new Gallup poll is poking holes in the widely held theory that poorer, less educated Americans are more likely to buy lottery tickets.

A telephone survey of 1,025 US adults in the month of June showed 49% of participants bought a state lottery ticket in the past 12 months. The figure is up from a historic low of 46% in 2007 but well off the 57% peak of the mid- to late-1990s, despite seven more states launching lotteries since that period.

Around 40% of participants who earned less than $36k per year had played the lottery in the past year, compared to 56% of those making between $36k and $90k, and 53% of those making over $90k.

The numbers were slightly more balanced in terms of education level, with 47% of those holding a high school diploma or less playing the lottery, compared to 53% of those holding a technical or college degree, while post-graduates scored lowest at 45%.
