NFL odds roundup: Week 8 lines & trends

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

Week 8 is actually a pretty good one in terms of teams on the bye because three of them in the Washington Football Team, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans are among the NFL’s worst clubs. The fourth off is a good Arizona Cardinals team.

It’s rare that an NFL team makes major news during its bye week short of firing a head coach, but the Miami Dolphins hijacked the football news last week when they were off with the fairly shocking decision to make rookie No. 5 overall pick Tua Tagovailoa as their first-time starter for this Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Rams.

On the one hand, it makes sense to make that call during a bye week to give Tua plenty of reps in practice, but on the other Ryan Fitzpatrick was playing quite well and had led the Dolphins to three wins in their past four and into the AFC East race. Miami is a 4-point underdog but has won 19 of its past 23 when hosting West Coast teams.

The Bears and Rams duke it out in Monday Night Football

The LA Rams and the Chicago Bears were both drawing a lot of attention heading into Monday Night Football. The two teams have superior defenses, and NFL fans expected this to be a low-scoring game. They weren’t wrong, and the turf was alive with great hits on both sides of the ball. By the time the clock ticked down to zero, though, the outcome may not have been what some had hoped to see.

The Rams defense was able to stop quarterback Nick Foles at almost every turn. It kept the Bears to under three points in the second half – the sixth time it’s pulled that off – and added a touchback and two interceptions to keep the Bears on their toes. The Rams, off the foot of punter Johnny Hekker, put the Bears inside the ten-yard line five times, making it difficult for the offense to develop.

That LA defense got some help from a better-than-normal offense, as well. Quarterback Jared Goff, hoping to bounce back from a sluggish performance in last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, rose to the occasion and put up back-to-back touchdown drives in the third quarter as he went 23 of 33 and picked up 219 yards in the game. Goff said after the game, “We did well; that defense is tough. There were a couple careless errors by me that we got away with, but that’s the game. I thought we were able to distribute the ball pretty well and make some plays.”

The Rams would lead 10-3 when the teams hit the lockers at the half, and would come out swinging in the second half. The Rams put up another touchdown as the third quarter was moving forward, and Hekker then planted the ball on the one-yard line, pinning the Bears and making it difficult for the offense to move. Foles tried, but fell short on one play and forced one of the game’s interceptions and the touchback that would then turn into another Rams touchdown. The Bears were now in a bad spot, down 24-3 and trying to figure out what to do.

NFL Sunday brings everything from hot wins to freezing snow

This NFL season has already positioned itself in the history books as one of the oddest in recent memory. Divisions that are filled with losing records, massive amounts of injuries, upsets and a pesky COVID-19 that has threatened to call off the action have kept things interesting from Week 1. Yesterday’s Week 7 games added to the excitement, bringing everything from clutch plays for the win to blizzards. Sports gamblers had to like what they saw, too.

The Green Bay Packers didn’t have too much to worry about with the Houston Texans, a team that is trying to find its direction after head coach Bill O’Brien was recently let go. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed the day with 283 yards as he threw four touchdowns, two of which went to Davante Adams, on the team’s way to a 35-20 victory. Bettors expected a blowout, and BetRivers saw 87% of the action going to the Packers, with another 77% covering the -3 Packers spread.

The Washington Football Team had no trouble as it faced the Dallas Cowboys. Mike McCarthy might be the second NFL coach in the Lone Star State to be fired this season after the embarrassing 25-3 loss that saw Washington control the course of the game from the start. The Cowboys were able to stop the WFT on the first drive at the goal line, but that was about the end of any defensive performance. This game went to the sportsbooks, with 78% of the bets on the spread were in favor of the Boys, and 76% had them winning the game.

The New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers met up in New Orleans, playing in front of just a handful of spectators, but it was enough to give the Saints a boost. Quarterback Drew Brees put up 287 yards, despite not having two top receivers, but the Panthers had their moments, as well. This game would be a battle all the way through and hinge on just one (controversial) play. Kicker Joey Slye was brought out to try a 65-yard field goal with two minutes still on the clock and almost pulled it off – it fell about a foot short, and the Saints would get the ball back to hold onto the 27-24 score. The good news for bettors is that the Panthers covered the spread, but the 61% of the bets on the Over/Under of 51 missed.

Last-minute touchdown turns Thursday Night Football into a thriller

Blowout games in any sport are never fun, and being able to enjoy a battle that comes down to the final seconds is what sports fans live for. They got their chance last night, as Thursday Night Football in the NFL kept things interesting until the final seconds ripped off the clock. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants had been expected to give football fans a thrill, but perhaps not in the way the game played out.

It can safely be said that Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz saved the day for his team last night. The Eagles were down by 11 points with only five minutes left in the game, and fans were already starting to turn off the TV. Undoubtedly, more than a handful of gamblers who had taken the underdogs to win had torn up their slips or turned off their phones to not be bothered with scoring updates. However, the early exit cost them the chance to see an incredible five minutes of football.

Looking at a 21-10 game with not much time left, Wentz was able to secure a long aerial pass to wide receiver John Hightower to set the Eagles up for a touchdown run by wide receiver Greg Ward from just a few yards out. With the game now 21-16, the Eagles opted for a two-point conversion to move within three on the Giants and Wentz took it in on his own to.

The only thing the Giants needed to do from this point was manage the clock and chew up as much time as possible. Keeping the ball on the ground would have helped, and for the first couple of downs, that’s what the Giants did. However, they tried to switch it up and go for a pass on third down, which tight end Evan Engram failed to pull down, forcing a punt. Just like that, the Eagles had a shot – albeit a long one – to find the win.

The four teams on the bye in Week 7 around the NFL are two Super Bowl contenders in the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens and two not-very-good teams in the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings.

The AFC South-leading Tennessee Titans were supposed to be on the bye, too, but a COVID-19 outbreak on the team forced some schedule changes. That included a Week 4 home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers that has now been moved to this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

It’s the marquee matchup of Week 7 between the AFC’s two remaining unbeatens and could have big-time playoff tiebreaker ramifications. Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was the 2019 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, and Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger could be the 2020 winner. The Steelers are -2 with the Titans 7-3 ATS in their past 10 as home dogs.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers show Green Bay Packers the way to attack

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Show Green Bay Packers the Way to Attack

In the meeting of the two ‘Bays’, it was Tampa who took the victory in the NFL as they reminded familiar foes Green Bay that attack is the best form of defence.

With the acquisition of Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers have shown intent in the form of their summer recruitment and with the addition of Brady’s former Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski, many pre-season pundits believed that Tampa had acquired a potential Vince Lombardi trophy-winning combination.

Tampa’s current regular season record of 4-2 might throw a little cold water on those flames rather than fanning them with praise, but this latest victory owed a lot to the offensive prowess of Bruce Arians’ side.

Seahawks survive Viking invasion to go ‘Hawaii 5-0’

The Seattle Seahawks were looking in great form heading into last night’s NFL game… then it kicked off.

With four wins from their opening four games, the ‘Hawks were expected to roll over the Minnesota Vikings, who had a record of 1-3 before the game.

That’s not what happened.

In the first quarter, The Seahawks remained without a point, and conceded seven. That was almost replicated in the second quarter, with the two teams going into the half-time interval with the score 13-0 to the Vikings, who had not just plundered a lead but deservedly so.

Brady’s Bucs meet the Chicago Bears on the football field tonight

While the rest of Week 5 action may be uncertain due to the return of COVID-19, tonight’s Thursday Night Football (TNF) for the NFL will move forward as planned. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears will meet on the gridiron, pitting two 3-1 teams against each other in a battle between the North and South. The Bucs may be the favorite heading into the game, but the Bears certainly can’t be ignored.

In Tampa Bay’s last game, against the LA Chargers, quarterback Tom Brady and the rest of the team found themselves in a hole that appeared to signal the end of the game. However, the 20-year veteran showed why he’s the NFL GOAT and rallied the team from as far down as 17 points to take the win, 38-31. Brady is unquestionably MVP material, throwing five touchdown passes, each to a different receiver. That flexibility makes it difficult for a defense to maintain adequate coverage on key plays.

That doesn’t mean the Bears are looking at a superior team, though. Although it was prior to the entrance of Brady, Chicago has beaten Tampa Bay six out of their last nine meetings. These two teams haven’t played each other since 2018, but the Bears defense is proving itself time and again this season. Despite ultimately losing last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, the defense forced the Colts to kick field goals on four drives in the red zone. The Bears are allowing offenses to score a touchdown on 37.5% of red zone drives, the strongest performance for the NFL this season.

The Bears also saw a spectacular performance out of wide receiver Allen Robinson last week and the week before. He logged over 100 receiving yards in each of the two games, a feat not seen on the team since 2015. As long as he and quarterback Nick Foles continue to connect like that, Chicago has a good shot of making this a battle to the bitter end.

There was one NFL game postponed and one pushed back a day in Week 4 due to positive COVID-19 tests on the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, and there have been additional positives this week on both teams, meaning Sunday’s Broncos-Patriots and Bills-Titans games are in jeopardy. The NFL has reportedly discussed adding a Week 18 to the regular season to accommodate postponed games and eliminating the bye between the conference title games and Super Bowl 55.

Frankly, there are no Week 5 games that scream “marquee matchup” if Bills-Titans is off, as they are both unbeaten division leaders.

The Cincinnati Bengals visit the Baltimore Ravens at 1 p.m. ET in the first-ever matchup between Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Ravens counterpart Lamar Jackson – both former Heisman winners. That could be one of the AFC’s best individual rivalries going forward. Burrow has become the first rookie QB to throw for at least 300 yards in three straight games. Baltimore is -13 but 1-4 ATS in the past five in this series.

The NFL Sunday that almost wasn’t

Reports last week that several players and staff members tied to the Tennessee Titans threatened to upend the NFL’s Week 4 schedule. When it was later reported that New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton and New Orleans Saints running back Michael Burton had also tested positive, things went from bad to worse. Fortunately for the Saints and Burton, the test was a false-positive, but not so for Newton. The result was an altered playbook for Week 4 that forces two games, not just one, to be played today. For the rest of the Sunday schedule, things moved forward as expected, but not necessarily as planned.

The San Francisco 49ers were the clear favorite heading into their game against the Philadelphia Eagles, despite having much of the first-string line banged up. They were getting -334 before the game, but the Eagles decided to give their fans a huge win and upset the odds. QB Carson Wentz was held to just 193 yards; however, he still managed to pick up two touchdowns on the way to a 25-20 win. The Eagles are now in first place in the NFC East after yesterday’s upset.

The Denver Broncos brought in an up-and-coming QB to start the game against the New York Jets and Denver hopes he improves as the season progresses. Brett Rypien threw three interceptions in the game, but the Broncos still managed to take the win, 37-28. The Jets were sloppy, but so were the Broncos. It turned into a game of who could be more undisciplined, and the Jets won in that category. They racked up 11 penalties, of which six were personal fouls.

Joe Burrow may have finally found his rhythm. Coming into the NFL as the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he headed to the Cincinnati Bengals and was expected to shine. Things got off to a sluggish start, but he turned it all around yesterday in a key game. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Burrow logged over 300 yards, making three in a row the times he has now pulled that off. He’s the first rookie QB to do so, and he and running back Joe Mixon hooked up several times to pull off the 33-25 win. Mixon ended the day with an impressive 151 yards on the ground, 30 in the air and three touchdowns.

Eagles sign multi-year betting partnership with DraftKings

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced a multiyear partnership with DraftKings, who are set to be the team’s betting partner and daily sports fantasy sports partner. The deal with DraftKings will give the betting giant exclusive naming right to the Field Club at Lincoln Financial Field.

Philadelphia Eagles Vice President Catherine Carlson was delighted with the new partnership with DraftKings:

“The DraftKings Field Club will offer a true VIP experience and exclusive gameday access featuring an on-field viewing area in the north end zone, hospitality arrangements in the private club space, and additional benefits. The DraftKings Field Club will open its doors to ticketed guests once the in-person sports experience returns to Lincoln Financial Field.

“Our partnership with DraftKings presents many new and exciting opportunities that will help drive the fan experience at Lincoln Financial Field to the next level. DraftKings has established itself as an emerging leader in the sports and entertainment space with an already strong presence in Philadelphia. We look forward to a successful future with DraftKings and showcasing the value of our shared vision in fun and engaging ways for our fans.”

Thursday Night Football finds Denver taming the Jets

Thursday Night Football brought together two NFL teams with goose eggs in their wins column this season. The Denver Broncos and the New York Jets were staring down 0-3 starts heading into their battle, and everyone knew someone would have to continue their losing streak by the time the night was over. What many had thought would be a chance for Jets head coach Adam Gase and his crew to shine and finally turn things around didn’t develop, though, and Jets fans, as well as a large number of sports gamblers, walked away more than a little frustrated.

The Jets were favored to win last night, partly due to Broncos injuries and a new-ish Broncos quarterback, Brett Rypien. The game got off to a good start to back up that prediction when quarterback Sam Darnold scrambled enough to find an opening and score the first touchdown of the game (and the only TD for the Jets on the night). However, it was all downhill from there, and the Jets’ offense would not see the end zone a single time, and would only see the red zone once.

The Broncos’ defense took revenge on Darnold starting with the Jets next offensive series, planting his right shoulder in the turf. He was forced to limp off to be examined, but was able to return just a short time later. Joe Flacco stepped in to fill the void, but it didn’t do any good. The Jets only managed the one offensive touchdown, one defensive touchdown after an interception and five field goals.

The Broncos offense and defense simply proved to be too much for the Jets, surprising since the team was riddled with injuries to many of its starters. Rypien, a third-stringer who had only once made a brief appearance on an NFL field, made his full debut last night, and his underwhelming performance is an indicator of how difficult things were for the Jets – not the Broncos. Rypien threw for 242 yards as he completed 19 of 31 passes, converting two of his aerials into touchdowns. However, he also put up three interceptions – one for a Jets TD.

Allegiant Stadium in Vegas opens to football fans, but not for the NFL

The NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders have already broken in their new home in Sin City, Allegiant Stadium, when they took and – and beat – the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. However, they were forced to play their opening home game in front of an empty stadium, as the COVID-19 debacle still forced a prohibition on large gatherings. That made the inauguration of the new, $1.9-billion facility less than thrilling, but football fans will soon be able to step inside the stadium for games. Unfortunately, they won’t be rooting on the Raiders.

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak recently eased up on capacity limitations for public gatherings, moving to erase the 50-person cap. As long as a facility can host at least 2,500 people, they can accept up to 10% their capacity. Smaller facilities can accept up to 50% of their capacity, but have a cap of 250 in place. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) jumped on the opportunity, announcing that it is going to allow fans of its football team to attend upcoming games.

Allegiant Stadium was designed to hold 65,000 people. Based on the governor’s new policy, this means that up to 6,500 UNLV Rebels fans can grab a seat for the first time at Allegiant. However, they need to be prepared to follow strict social distancing and mask policies, which Nevada has sometimes had difficulty controlling. Before opening the ticket counters, though, UNLV’s plans have to be approved by the Nevada Department of Business and Industry, as well as the Southern Nevada Health District.

The NFL just got intercepted by COVID-19

Everything had been running smoothly in the 2020 NFL season. Through the first three weeks, other than a spate of injuries, there had been no problems with COVID-19; only one case had been reported. That all changed yesterday, however, when the coronavirus stepped up its game and took out nine people on a single team. The ramifications are troublesome and now have the league and all franchises scrambling to figure out how best to contain the situation.

The Tennessee Titans reported yesterday that three of the team’s players and five members of its staff had tested positive for COVID-19. To avoid the possibility that the results were a false alarm, everyone had to go through additional testing, which confirmed that they are definitely infected. DaQuan Jones, Beau Brinkley and Tommy Hudson were placed on the Titans’ Reserve-COVID-19 list as a result. The staff members weren’t named.

The announcement forced the Minnesota Vikings to jump into action, as well. They had hosted the Titans this past Sunday and, in addition to losing by one point, could have seen COVID-19 jump the lines and infect someone on the squad. However, according to initial tests, no Vikings player has returned a positive result.

Still, both teams have decided to temporarily close their facilities and halt practices – the Titans don’t anticipate getting back to work until this Saturday. That’s not necessarily a good game plan, though, as going into a Sunday game after four days of no practice is not a smart move. The Titans, which are supposed to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers this coming weekend, would simply be asking to have more players end up on the injured reserve list.

NFL odds roundup: Week 4 lines & trends

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

All NFL teams will reach the quarter point of their regular-season schedule in Week 4, and thankfully there have been no major COVID-19 issues in terms of players sidelined or games postponed – unlike college football, which has a lot of virus-related issues and cancellations.

Teams that are 0-3 can essentially forget about the playoffs as just six clubs to start a season that way since 1980 made the postseason. The last was the 2018 Houston Texans (who are 0-3 again). On the flip side, more than 75 percent of teams over the past 40 years to start 3-0 reached the playoffs.

While Week 3 had a handful of marquee matchups, Week 4 is lacking a bit. Clearly the biggest one is a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs from Arrowhead Stadium in a potential AFC playoff preview. Both teams come off facing tough opponents, with the Patriots beating the Las Vegas Raiders 36-20 and the Chiefs largely dominating 34-20 in Baltimore on Monday night.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have an easy night against the Ravens

Monday Night Football (MNF) for the NFL last night was expected to be a battle of the ages. Two teams with 2-0 records, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens, duking it out on the football battlefield to see who was the best. If that was the best the Ravens could muster, they’re in for a long, cold winter. It seems the oddsmakers were completely off-base with this game, but those who selected the underdog had a great day.

Patrick “His name isn’t Pat!” Mahomes was on fire for the Chiefs. The Super Bowl MVP quarterback took control of the contest early on and refused to let go. He was able to move around in the pocket and avoid getting hit while looking for his targets downfield. By the end of the night, Mahomes would go 31 for 41, picking up 385 yards and four touchdowns. He even picked up 26 rushing yards and scored another touchdown on his own while throwing no interceptions and not getting sacked. By the end of the first half, the Chiefs were already up 27-10.

Things would only get worse for the Ravens from there. Head coach John Harbaugh had difficulty countering a Chiefs playbook that brought in dominating plays on both offense and defense, and said of the Chiefs after the game, “They beat us, they out-executed us. They out gameplanned [sic] us. They just beat us. That’s the story tonight. Big picture stuff, all that, I don’t know. They’re better obviously, they’re a better football team at this point in time.”

Before last night, the Ravens had been on a regular-season winning streak that lasted 14 games. The Chiefs made easy work of breaking that trend, while capturing their twelfth win in a row. Mahomes would make sure haters recognized that he’s worth every penny of the $503-million, ten-year extension he signed in the offseason as he placed an exclamation mark on his team’s 27-20 lead. Heading into the final minutes of the fourth quarter, he led a 13-play drive that helped chew up precious time, converting a third-and-five and a third-and-ten to keep the clock running. With just over eight minutes left, he flicked the ball to an unexpected target for the final touchdown of the night, extending the Chiefs’ lead to 34-20. That target was right tackle Eric Fisher, the most unexpected target the Ravens could have imagined.

The NFL’s Tennessee Titans the latest to hook up with sportsbook

After first laying the groundwork for a legal sports gambling market in the state more than a year ago, Tennessee is almost ready to start the clock. The market is expected to go live on November 1 and would join a growing number of states that have made the leap into the sportsbook pool. The idea of keeping sports and sports gambling separated is no longer an option anywhere, and this is evident by the continuous stream of deals being made between sports organizations and sports gambling and casino operators. The latest, right on the heels of new partnerships between the PointsBet sportsbook and the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears, the Tennessee Titans are in the game, having secured an agreement with BetMGM.

Tennessee only just approved licenses for sportsbooks a few days ago, and the ink is still wet on the contracts. DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM are all set to go in the Volunteer State, warming up and exercising ahead of the opening whistle in just over a month. The Titans announced the new partnership with BetMGM yesterday and, with that, the team is the first professional sports team in the state to connect with a sports gambling operator. Asserts the NFL team’s senior VP and chief marketing officer, Gil Beverly, “We are thrilled to bring BetMGM to the state of Tennessee. BetMGM will deliver new experiences and levels of engagement to our fans and we’re excited to welcome them in as an official partner.”

BetMGM will now be featured on the digital platforms controlled by the Titans and will also see its name run alongside field goal attempts, video board replays and more during live games. The sportsbook, controlled through a partnership between MGM Resorts International and GVC Holdings, is also going to hold an upcoming raffle to raise money for the Titans Foundation, and will be the exclusive naming rights partner of the Titans’ Saint Thomas Sports Park television studio. In addition, it will also appear in connection with Titans All Access and the Coach Mike Vrabel Show.

As opposed to most states, Tennessee is going the virtual route with its sports gambling. It will offer an online-only market, which should appeal to most people, anyway. In terms of revenue, online sports gambling has been winning the race against retail hands-down, and is inarguably the future of most sports betting everywhere.
