Massachusetts’ newest and largest casino generated nearly $27m in gambling revenue during its first full month of business, in what has to be viewed as a disappointing result for its operator MGM Resorts.
Figures released Monday by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) show the state’s two gaming venues generated combined gross gaming revenue of nearly $41.3m in September. Of this sum, $14.3m was generated by Penn National Gaming’s slots-only Plainridge Park Casino.
The $960m MGM Springfield, which opened its doors in late August, generated $26.95m, of which $8.8m came via its gaming tables and the rest from slots. Slots handle was $190m, meaning the property scored a respectable 9.5% slots hold.
Last month, MGM Springfield reported gaming revenue of $9.5m in its first eight days of operation and September’s take falls well shy of that weekly benchmark. MGM had previously forecast annual gaming revenue of $418m from its Springfield venue’s initial year of operations, but it won’t get there if future months don’t significantly improve on September’s take.
