Trump improves election odds with RNC convention

After nearly 2 years of campaigning, we’re nearing the home stretch of the U.S. 2020 Presidential election. Both President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden have accepted their nominations, and we have just over 2 months to go until election day. But did either candidate get a bump from their respective conventions? Bodog has the odds to let us know.

During last week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC), most media pundits celebrated just how professional the whole affair was, with celebrity hosts, a diverse selection of speakers and, as many center-left pundits hailed, a new mom for America in V.P. pick Kamala Harris. But for the more cynical observer, a convention has a problem when the most exciting thing about the entire thing was an appetizer.

Rhode Island was a big sensation at the virtual Democratic National Convention for its unconventional video plugging calamari — the state’s official appetizer. https://t.co/C8j5epDiZI #odd

Community shield preview: Arsenal and Liverpool renew rivalry

It might seem like the 2019/20 Premier League season has only just finished, but old rivalries are about to be renewed as the Community Shield heralds a new dawn of the most popular soccer league in the world.

Arsenal, last season’s F.A. Cup winners, will take on Liverpool, the 2019/20 runaway Premier League champions in a game that may say more about where each team’s fitness is rather than guide us towards value in picking where either team will end up.

Finding Form

While Liverpool have rather stumbled over the line, not beating anyone of note at the tail-end of the season, Arsenal come into the 2020/21 season in fine form. Mikel Arteta is clearly building a great team ethic and while some of the players at his disposal wouldn’t get near the Liverpool team in the same positions, the collective is steadily improving with virtually every game.

NBA athletes, others call it quits in protest of racial violence

Yesterday, there were three NBA games on tap as the playoffs have been running like a well-oiled machine. One of the games was between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Orlando Magic, who have been battling to determine which advances in the postseason. While the Magic were warming up on the court in preparation for the game, the Bucks were nowhere to be seen. Just minutes before the tip-off should have taken place, there were still no Bucks. Then, the referees disappeared, followed by the Magic. While there had not been any official announcement prior to the game, speculation that the Bucks would boycott the game began to surface, and was later confirmed. That boycott, designed to bring attention to racial and social injustice in the U.S., spilled over to the entire NBA and all three of the games were canceled. It has also gone further, with teams in other sports leagues joining forces with their fellow athletes in a sign of solidarity. This is most likely just the beginning, too.

It wasn’t coincidence that the Bucks made the first move. They hail from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is only about 40 miles from the city of Kenosha, the location of the latest incident involving law enforcement officers and a black man. This past Sunday, Jacob Blake was shot seven times by police in his back as he was getting into his car. The 29-year-old didn’t appear to be brandishing any sort of weapon, and the handful of officers apparently weren’t enough to control a single man. They fired at him at close range, even though there were three children in the car, and he is apparently now paralyzed.

The Bucks’ back office didn’t even know the boycott was coming, but stands behind its players, who said in a statement, “The past four months have shed a light on the ongoing racial injustices facing our African-American communities. Citizens around the country have used their voices and platforms to speak out against these wrongdoings.

“Over the last few days in our home state of Wisconsin, we’ve seen the horrendous video of Jacob Blake being shot in the back seven times by a police officer in Kenosha, and the additional shooting of protestors. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action, so our focus today cannot be on basketball.

Key games highlight Thursday NBA betting slate

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

Two of the NBA’s first-round Western Conference playoff series could wrap up on Thursday, and the first Eastern Conference semifinal game also will be played from the Orlando bubble.

At 4 p.m. ET, the Utah Jazz try for a second straight contest to eliminate the Denver Nuggets as they meet in Game 6 of their series, with the Jazz sitting as 2-point favorites. Denver stayed alive and ended a three-game losing streak by rallying from a 15-point deficit and winning 117-107 on Tuesday behind 42 points from Jamal Murray – he’s averaging 30.8 points in the series.

Murray’s 33 points in the second half tied for the most by any player facing elimination in the past 20 postseasons. Utah’s Donovan Mitchell, who has two 50-point games in the series, was “held” to 30. Denver is 6-2 ATS in the past eight meetings overall.

Who are the favourites to win the top five leagues in Europe?

With domestic football having already restarted in France, the transfer window well and truly open and leagues in England, Italy, Germany and Spain poised to renew rivalries, there’s no better time than now to appraise the chances of the top sides.

While last year’s champions such as Real Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus will be strong, there are no shortage of teams who have the financial capabilities to challenge those current title holders in any of Europe’s top five divisions.

Who’ll take the title next May in England, Italy, France, Germany and Spain? Let’s take a look at the odds and pick some winners.
