ePL invitational returns as draw pitches Maddison against Wilson

No sooner had the first ePL Invitational tournament concluded were fans already asking the Premier League to put together another one. The absence of real-life Premier League action has left fans bereft of entertainment during lockdown and a period where the Premier League season would usually be building to a thrilling climax.

It’s a cause for celebration, then, that the ePremier League Invitational event is back, just over a week since Diogo Jota’s golden goal defeated Trent Alexander-Arnold and meant Wolves claimed the first-ever ePL title.

This time around, there are new players taking part, with some exciting 1st Round match-ups already confirmed. James Maddison of Leicester City and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson will do battle to decide who gets a Last 16 place, with another game in the 1st Round between Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon and West Ham supporter Spencer Owen going to be a game of top quality.

Maddison has been in entertaining form already this week, taking on Jamie Carragher in the Sky Sports Premier League quiz with hilarious consequences.

The sports world in the US is suffering from a $12-billion problem

March was not a good month for sports. In fact, some might say that it was the worst month in the entire history of athletics.  Just days ahead of the NCAA March Madness, the college basketball tournament was called off. The NBA had just postponed its season, followed by the NHL, MLB, MLS and the PGA. The loss of March Madness and MLB’s Opening Day hit especially hard, as they’re two of the most prominent sports events in the month, and caused pandemonium for sports fans, sports gamblers and sportsbooks. With activity still suspended, and no clear picture of what will happen next, the U.S. sports world is suffering its worse economic depression ever. The tally is reportedly up to $12 billion already – in just two months – and continues to climb. The next couple of months are crucial to avoiding any further financial catastrophes.

According to analysis prepared by ESPN, the economic upheaval for the sports industry in the U.S. is going to be felt for some time. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost, and may permanently remain off the books, and, if NFL and college games seasons aren’t able to get going this September, things will be even worse. While it’s obvious that the entire world is suffering from a huge economic meltdown, the losses for U.S. sports could represent close to 20% of their aggregate value.

ESPN explains, “From stadium authorities to youth sports complexes, from rec centers to global TV networks such as ESPN, the scale of devastation is only now coming into view. Some organizations, especially at the lower levels of sports, say they’ll be lucky to survive. The pain is especially acute among the army of low-wage service workers who support pro and college sports and are now unemployed. The losses are draining tax revenue that helps support local services such as police and firefighters and contributes to the quality of everyday life in thousands of communities.”

To reach its conclusion, ESPN employed the help of Dr. Patrick Rishe, founder of the Sports Business Program at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He compiled data from the different sports leagues, relying on certain assumptions, such as whether or not leagues that were starting to get active when COVID-19 came roaring into town will be able to play at least half of their respective seasons. He also projected both the NHL and the NBA canceling their regular seasons and holding playoffs in front of empty stands.

NFL scraps international games for the upcoming season

The NFL is expected to release its schedule for the upcoming season in the next couple of days and there will reportedly be a couple of glaring omissions on the list. The football league has made it standard to host a game in London, England every year for the past 13 seasons, with four games played there last year. For the upcoming season, the Jacksonville Jaguars had two games previously on the books to be held at Wembley Stadium, and two other games were going to be included. However, it now looks as though none of these games will take place, nor will the games typically held in Mexico City.

The other two games were to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but not anymore. While there hasn’t been an official announcement by the NFL, Tottenham is said to be preparing for losses incurred by the cancellation of the games, which will amount to around $5 million, according to The Daily Mail. This would have been just the second year that the stadium hosted NFL games as part of a ten-year contract the two sides signed ahead of the 2019 season.

Despite the lack of confirmation on the part of NFL brass, the cancellation of overseas contests seems logical. There’s not much reason to put players on a plane to jump to another country, putting many of them, as well as staff, at risk. Sports Illustrated’s NFL pro Albert Breer agrees, asserting, “I tend to think that it’s unlikely we’ll be in a place in the fall where we’re sending hundreds of people on planes overseas and to Mexico, and back, without significant concern. And this is one of those situations where—given that the league might not be able to have full (or any) crowds there, and the festival the NFL puts on around these games will be difficult to pull off—risk will almost certainly outweigh reward. So I’d guess the international slate gets called off for 2020.”

The games in London and Mexico have turned out to be real crowd-pleasers, which is why the number of games held overseas has increased in recent years. The Jaguars have become regular fixtures in London, and there has even been a rumor about a possible permanent relocation by the team to England. Team owner Shad Khan has downplayed those rumors and has even invested a considerable amount of money upgrading the team’s home field, TIAA Bank stadium.

Five busted in Australia for fixing eSports matches

As long as there is money, there will be people who try to scam it out of others. It’s been that way since the first currency was introduced, and, for the past 7,000 years, nothing has changed. Ponzi schemes, cheating, scams – some people of questionable moral fortitude simply believe they don’t need to play by the rules, which ultimately impacts everyone. Five individuals in Australia fit into this category perfectly, but at least they can brag of making Aussie history. They are being charged with trying to fix eSports matches in what is now the first criminal investigation into eSports in the country.

The investigation began last year after police with the Victoria Police Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit followed a hunch that eSports contests were being thrown. The games were part of a semi-professional eSports league, and people tied to the teams of the league were given hints on how to place their bets. Neil Paterson, the police department’s assistant commissioner, asserted to media outlets last September that up to AU$30,000 (around $19,230) may have been wagered in connection with the match-fixing.

The cheating was apparently focused primarily on Counter Strike: Global Offensive games being played in the ESEA-Mountain Dew League. Law enforcement began following their hunch in March of last year, ultimately leading to the charges against the five individuals last week. One 20-year-old from Melbourne has been charged with two counts of “engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome,” as well as two counts of using corrupt conduct information for gambling, and possession of cannabis. Three other locals, also 20 years old, are each looking at three counts of using corrupt conduct information for gambling, and the fifth individual, from Sale, Victoria, is a 27-year-old who now faces five counts of the same type. All of the accused reportedly went to the same high school and university.

Paterson explains of the scandal, “We’ve got young men, typically 19- or 20-year-olds, who have no history with police. They’re [allegedly] getting involved in [corruption] offences … at quite a young age that have serious consequences for them. The sheer volume of young men involved in gambling, both in high school and in universities, is at epidemic proportions. What I’m not seeing is anyone doing anything particularly about that.”

Andy Murray wins Virtual Madrid Open & donates to NHS

After a fun week of Esports action, three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray was crowned the Virtual Madrid Open champion as he beat David Goffin in the final to clinch a 7-6 victory in the tie-break decider.

The semi-finals of the tournament were a mixed bag. Andy Murray was effectively given a bye to the final after connection problems for Diego Schwartzman saw the two men agree that it should be Murray who advanced to the final. With the ‘lag’ on his system giving Schwartzman an advantage, the two men attempted an offline game, but it was no good and the decision was made for Murray to advance.

In the other semi-final, though, there was no problem hitting the server for Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas and David Goffin, who triumphed against the odds to progress to the final.

The match could hardly have been closer, with Goffin making it through 7-6 after a tie-break went right down to the wire, Goffin taking it 8-6. Tsitsipas tried one line-ball too many as he eventually bowed out, despite being many Esports pundits’ picks to prove the more difficult opponent for Murray to beat in the final.

Teams of the Century: Manchester United (2012/13)

It is seven years since Manchester United last won the English Premier League title, and they haven’t got close since. In terms of points, the 81 points they took in 2017/18 has been the best they’ve done since, when they finished 19 points off the top.

The 2012/13 season was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of the Red Devils, and he led United into the season on the back of one of the most dramatic signings the club had made in Ferguson’s 28 years at the club’s helm.

In pinching Robin Van Persie from Arsenal, United had arguably the best two strikers in the league, with Wayne Rooney fast on his way to becoming United’s record goalscorer. United had lost the previous league title on goal difference with both United and City accumulating 89 points. While many would refer to the changes made at Old Trafford signaling a final flourish for Fergie’s team, United only maintained that level, taking 89 points again, scoring the exact-same number of goals, just conceding 10 more. That defensive dip was to hint at the years to come, but back in the pre-season period, it was all about integrating Van Persie into the side.

One of the biggest problems in previous years, certainly the 2011/12 season, was United’s inability to start the season well. That looked set to continue when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Everton on the opening weekend, but four successive wins, including a 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield helped calmed some of the nerves, with Van Persie proving the clutch forward at the death as 10-man Liverpool first led then lost.

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year odds roundup

There’s no tried and true way to win a wager on the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year each season, but one smart bet of late has simply been picking an Ohio State player. Last year, former Buckeyes defensive end Nick Bosa won the award for the San Francisco 49ers as the No. 2 overall pick.

Bosa was the third Buckeye to win it in the past four seasons, joining New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore (No. 11 overall pick in 2017) and Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa (No. 3 overall pick in 2016), Nick’s brother.

The first defensive player off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft was a player ranked higher by scouts than any of the three listed above: Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young was the No. 2 overall pick by the Washington Redskins and is the +200 DROY favorite. He was favored before the draft too.

How much will Joe Burrow help the Bengals in his first NFL Season?

Last week’s NFL Draft saw the predictable first round pick everyone saw coming – Joe Burrow was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals as their quarterback. How much of an effect Burrows has on the Bengals is one of the biggest questions ahead of whenever the NFL returns.

From rocketing to fame as the record-breaking winner of the Heisman Trophy, Joe Burrow has had a meteoric rise. The 23-year-old threw for a barely processable 5,671 yards which led to 60 touchdowns as he led the Tigers to an undefeated College Football Playoff National Championship title. In doing so, Burrow bagged both a National Championship and won the Heisman and #1 draft pick gongs – the first time in history one man had achieved such a feat.

Meteors, however, crash to Earth as well as soar through space, so will Burrow rise or fall again when the season begins in earnest?

Murray and Nadal serve up spectacle as Virtual Madrid Open reaches quarter-finals

A clash between Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal on clay was mouthwatering for tennis fans around the world.  After all, the last time the two men met on the clay was way back in 2016, in their last professional match to date. Murray won on that occasion, taking the Madrid Open semi-final 7-5, 6-4.

In an odd twist of fate, this was the two friends’ next meeting, on the virtual clay of the Madrid Open. This time, however, the rules were different. The winner would be the first to three single games, as long as that victory was by two games. End up level at 3-3 and it would be  atie-break to decide the winner.

That method was exactly how Nadal limped into this meeting, but for Andy Murray, the route was much easier, a convincing 3-1 victory over Benoit Paire making him a 4/7 favourite when taking on Nadal. We said yesterday that the price was huge for Murray and should be taken up and we’re happy to report that we weren’t wrong.

In what was a ludicrously one-sided affair, Nadal’s method of getting a return from anywhere wasn’t good enough, Murray’s groundstrokes pinning his opponent to the corners and leading to some friendly banter between the two men.

NFL Futures: NFC Conference odds update

The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles both are talented enough to win the NFC this year and play in Super Bowl 55 in Tampa, Florida. The Packers and Eagles also have two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Aaron Rodgers and Carson Wentz, respectively. The championship window is wide open for both franchises. Yet both made very puzzling early picks in the 2020 NFL Draft this past weekend.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

Green Bay is at +1000 with Philadelphia at +1100 to win the NFC title, behind the San Francisco 49ers (+400), New Orleans Saints (+500) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+500).

The Packers, who haven’t won the NFC since the 2010 season and were crushed in last year’s NFC title game by the 49ers, bafflingly selected Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with their first-round pick in the 2020 draft, trading up a few spots to get him. While Love has major upside, he’s a project and will not help the team this year.

Opinion: The Right Moment to Join the Esports Betting Business

For several years now, experts have been saying esports and esports betting are promising fields for investment. But despite this, many investors and entrepreneurs have remained passive, perhaps assuming the industry still needed time to mature, stabilize, and become more predictable. Today, it seems many are waiting for the COVID-19 crisis to pass before committing to action. Of course, this hesitation is perfectly understandable given the terrible impact the crisis is having on many sectors, but waiting could be a mistake. Why? Because esports has found itself in a very unusual position, and there are plenty of indicators that despite the turmoil the world is witnessing, now is an opportune time to enter the esports betting business, whether as an investor or a startup.

British Horseracing Authority backs CEO after calls for ouster

The UK racing industry is fending off calls for the ouster of Nick Rust, CEO of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), over his alleged failures to safeguard the industry during the COVID-19 shutdown.

Over the weekend, reports emerged that trainers Ralph Beckett and Mark Johnston had sent emails to BHA chair Annamarie Phelps calling for Rust’s immediate removal. The pair accused Rust (pictured) of failing to prioritize live racing’s resumption following its mid-March suspension by the BHA in response to the pandemic.

The BHA originally planned to lift the suspension on May 1 but extended that timeline after the UK government extended its own lockdown of non-essential businesses. The BHA said it hoped to resume racing ‘behind closed doors’ sometime in May but believed racing with crowds in the stands wouldn’t resume “until June at the earliest.”

The two trainers argued that Rust, who in January announced his intention to leave the BHA by the end of the year, is a lame duck leader who is looking to his own future, not racing’s. Beckett urged the BHA not to wait for the government’s approval to resume racing, noting that it was “a BHA decision to stop and it needs to be a BHA decision to restart.”

NFL Futures: AFC Conference odds update

The 2020 NFL Draft is in the rearview mirror, meaning that for the most part teams now know what their rosters will look like entering training camp – if there are training camps. There could still be a few big names on the move via free agency (Cam Newton, for example) or players being released (Andy Dalton). The next major date on the offseason slate is the release of the 2020 schedule, which is likely to be sometime the week of May 4. Then it’s quiet until camps hopefully start later this summer.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

Futures odds generally don’t change too much following the draft because the bad teams are likely to start plenty of rookies, while the good teams for the most part have all their key starters already in place. The Cincinnati Bengals had the first overall pick in the 2020 draft and are +5000 to win the conference this season. Burrow could be Dan Marino as a rookie, but the Bengals aren’t winning the AFC. Just too many holes.

One very interesting team is the New England Patriots at +1000 – they never had such long conference odds since Tom Brady took over as the full-time starter early in the 2001 season. Of course, Brady is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach Bill Belichick might have had the worst quarterback room in the NFL entering the draft with unproven second-year Jarrett Stidham and veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer.

Fortnite launches $2 million invitational event

While Esports big hitters such as League of Legends and FIFA have each offered charity drive events to keep their top players busy during the Coronavirus crisis, Fortnite makers Epic Games had been pretty quiet in the past month.

That was until the following statement confirmed that Chapter 2’s second season would run a little longer than its original end date.

“We’re extending Chapter 2 – Season 2 of Fortnite beyond the original April 30 date. Our plan is to launch Chapter 2 – Season 3 on June 4. Before then, there’s lots of content coming in the current Season. We have multiple game updates on the way that will deliver fresh gameplay, new Challenges, bonus XP, and a couple more surprises up our sleeve! See you on the Island!”

On the back of that decision to extend the season, Fortnite have announced a $2 million tournament series that is sure to prick up the ears of even the most casual combatant on the famous Battle Royale island.

How is each Premier League team coping with coronavirus?

There are 20 teams in the English Premier League and while some have been paragons of virtue, others have let themselves and their fans down. Who is who? Check out all of the teams and how they are coping below.

Arsenal

A busy quarantine period for The Gunners kicked the Premier League hiatus off when Mikel Arteta was confirmed to have Coronavirus, leading to the postponement of the game at Manchester City.

Since then, Arsenal have seen most of their players agree to a wage cut, but Mesut Ozil looks to be making a stand to avoid being included in that number, and with contract negotiations reportedly not going to plan with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, an already unsettled period could yet lead to the loss of the North London side’s prime asset.

SBC Digital Summit explores how gambling survives during Covid-19

Gambling firms have had to change up their strategies a bit thanks to the COVID-19 crisis. Much like SBC events have had to go online, operators have had to find new sports betting products, and re-assess their 2020 strategies to keep the bottom line stable. A couple of panels on Day 1 of the SBC Digital Summit helped highlight just how much the industry has had to change.

The first panel, moderated by SG Digital Group CEO Jordan Levin, was the “Business Continuity in the face of COVID-19.” He hosted George Daskalakis, CEO and Founder of Stoiximan and Betano, Tim Heath, CEO and Founder of Coingaming, Jesper Svenssion, CEO of Betsson Group and Shay Segev, COO of GVC Holdings.

Segev began by walking the audience through GVC’s response to COVID-19. Business continuity has been different by region, as western countries have had minimal trouble shifiting to remote work, while countries like the Philippines, where personal laptops and strong internet connections are more rare, have proven to be a problem. And of course, retail operations are currently out of the question. But the company has largely focused on managing its cash, planning for difference scenarios that might arise, and planning for a return to normalcy.

All of the panelists noted that as work has shifted remotely, a constant stream of communications with their employees and players have become vital. Heath noted that the number of meetings with employees have increased to keep them in touch, and VIP players are now getting treated to poker tournaments, discord channels, and generally letting them know “they’re not alone.”

EPL Invitational won by wolves striker Jota with golden goal

A truly thrilling finish took place in the ePL Invitational tournament as Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Diogo Jota beat Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in the inaugural FIFA 20 Event final after a golden goal from his team-mate Raul Jimenez sealed victory for Jota.

With the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final all taking part across the final two days of the tournament after a thrilling opening couple of days of FIFA 20 action, bragging rights were on the line too. But who else wishes they could have finished off their opponent, while others were left thanking their lucky football stars? Read on and find out.

Quarter Finals:

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) 4-1 Christian Atsu (Newcastle)
