Stanleybet lose court fight over Italian betting license; VLT/AWP tax kicks in

Liverpool-based betting operator Stanleybet has lost its court challenge of Italy’s right to issue betting licenses of shorter durations than those previously issued. The brouhaha began in mid-2012 after Italy decided to issue licenses for 2k new betting shops but stipulated that these licenses would be valid for a 40-month period, not the 12-year period previous licensees had enjoyed.

Stanleybet’s Malta-based subsidiary operates a number of data transmission centers (DTC) in Italy that remotely connect betting shop patrons to Stanleybet sites. These DTC had been operating in Italy for 15 years without a license, mainly because Italy had deemed international companies like Stanleybet ineligible for licenses.

When the European Union ordered Italy to play by the rules, Stanleybet argued that the 2012 tender process unfairly favored previous licensees, who enjoyed longer license periods and were allowed the freedom to transfer these licenses. Italy retorted that the new license duration was intended to align license expiry dates.

In a decision released on Thursday, the Court of Justice for the European Union (CJEU) dismissed Stanleybet’s argument, saying Italy had the right to align its betting license expiry dates, which “may contribute to a coherent pursuit of the legitimate objectives of reducing gambling opportunities or of combating criminality linked to betting.” The CJEU also rubbished Stanleybet’s claim to being ‘new entrants’ given their previous unlicensed activities in the Italian market.

ITALY’S NEW VLT/AWP TAX KICKS IN

Meanwhile, Italy’s new tax on video lottery terminals (VLT) has taken effect. In December, Italian politicians approved a new tax on VLTs and amusement with prizes (AWP) machines. The tax is applied based on the number of machines each operator has, regardless of the revenue each machine generates. The law prompted many operators to reduce their number of machines in the hope of lessening their tax burden.

Italy expects to raise an additional €500m in annual revenue via the tax. Around €96m of this is expected to come from Lottomatica/Gtech, while B Plus will be dinged for around €85m. Other major contributors include Gamenet, (€46m), Sisal (€45m) and SNAI (€37m). DLA Piper gaming attorney Giulio Coraggio suspects the new tax could lead to a court challenge as well as a round of consolidation as smaller operators find the new tax makes business unsustainable.

NFL Super Bowl XLIX Prop Bets Part 2: Props I’d Like To See

We need a new set of props if we are going to bet the Super Bowl.

I’ve already established that betting on prop bets at the Super Bowl is pretty fun. But every year, it seems that the same type of props are being offered. Some involve the national anthem and the halftime show. Others involve the color of the Gatorade, the coin toss, and the first scoring play of the game.

All these props are cool, but they’ve been offered so many times that they’ve lost a little bit of originality. That’s where I come into the picture.

In the second part of my prop series on Super Bowl XLIX, I’m taking a short detour and present a handful of props that I want to see get offered, even though sportsbooks are unlikely to take that course of action, for one reason or another.

Who knows, maybe a sportsbook gets to read this and decides to offer them. Just give a hat tip if you do.

If Richard Sherman wins Super Bowl MVP, will he ignore Commissioner Roger Goodell and instead shake the hand of and/or talk to Cardboard Cut-Out Roger Goodell?

Given the manner by which Sherman and Doug Baldwin mocked the NFL a few months ago with that pre-meditated press conference, this one could get interesting if Sherman somehow wins Super Bowl MVP and has to stand on the podium next to Goodell for the trophy presentation. Normally, a handshake between the MVP and the Commish happens in these moments, but wouldn’t be the ultimate slap in the face of Goodell if Sherman refuses to shake his hand and/or talk to him, instead bringing out a cardboard cut-out of Goodell and then shaking the hand of said cardboard and talking to him…or it.

If that happens, forget about the game itself. That would be what everyone will be talking about for years to come.

Works suspended at COD Macau after fatal accident

An accident occurred on Tuesday at the construction site in the grounds of City of Dreams Macau casino resort, resulting to a death of a local construction worker.

A 29-year-old local worker died yesterday around 11 a.m., after falling 10 meters with a lifting machine he was operating at the City of Dreams construction site.

The accident took place near Gate No. 3 of the retail arcade expansion project site of City of Dreams in Cotai. The gross floor area of the expansion site occupies 17,000 square metres, according to the main contractor of the project, Chun Wo Development Holdings Ltd.

The Macau government ordered a contractor at City of Dreams Macau “to immediately suspend the use of all lifting appliances and requested an examination of the lifting procedures and equipment at the site.

“The Bureau will continue to investigate the cause of the accident and to pursue the legal responsibilities of relevant parties,” said Macau Labour Affairs Bureau in a statement.

The Bureau has also issued a suspension order to the City of Dreams retail arcade expansion site and an analysis report of the accident and updated measures of compliance to safety standards have to be submitted before work can resume at the site.

Head of Corporate Communications for Melco Crown Maggie Ma, told GGRAsia that the suspension will not delay ongoing extension works.

Echo lays out Brisbane casino plans, promises 8,000 employment opportunities

Echo Entertainment has bared a few items about its plans for its multi-billion-dollar casino and resort project in Brisbane. Some of the key highlights of the development will include five hotels, three residential towers, an underground mall that will be linked to a Ritz-Carlton hotel that will have its own casino, more than 50 restaurants and bars, a moonlight cinema, an infinity pool, and 12 football fields of public event space.

Echo is barred from divulging specific commercial details about its development because of rules in the competitive tender process issued by the government of Queensland. The Australian Business Review, quoting its sources, reported that Echo’s proposal will include close to 1,000 hotel rooms and a pair of residential skyscrapers rising up to 50 storeys with around 1,200 apartments.

The company also plans to relocate its existing casino from the Treasury building and move to The Arc, which will rise on the space where the government’s old Executive Building is located. A high-end mall developed by Chow Tai Fook, as well as an underground department store just below Queens Park, are also part of Echo’s proposal, as are Dorsett and Rosewood-branded hotels, and the aforementioned Ritz-Carlton hotel stretching across the top two floors of the Treasury building.

The Australian casino operator is making a bid for the casino license with the backing of Hong Kong-based firms Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium. Echo’s only competition for the license, James Packer’s Crown Resorts, has yet to divulge its own proposal, although it is believed that it will include two luxury hotels, a six-star hotel, and up to 2,500 apartments, among other items.

Despite the competing bid coming from its fierce rival, Echo remains bullish on its own proposal and has even indicated that it would generate as many as 8,000 jobs and attract around 1.4 million visitors in just its first year. The company said as much in a filing to the Australian Stock Exchange, adding that around 2,000 jobs would be created during the construction phase.

The Queensland government is expected to announce the winning bidder in the first half of 2015.

Becky’s Affiliated: How start-up focused Pitch ICE will move the gaming industry forward

Innovation is at the heart of the gambling industry and a good percentage of the innovation comes from our start-ups.

Start-up focused events have become a popular feature at conferences such as GiGse, EiG and now ICE Totally Gaming with everything from “start-up zones,” to carefully planned out “Launch Pads” and “Pitches”.

For the first time ever, we’ll be seeing a dedicated space at ICE for start-up pitches, hosted by Clarion and organized by GamCrowd.  The partnership between these two companies began at EiG 2014 and has continued into 2015 with the creation of “Pitch ICE”.

A total of twenty start-ups signed up for Pitch ICE through GamCrowd.  Each company has submitted a two-minute video about their product to GamCrowd’s site so interested parties can watch and get an idea of what pitches they want to attend live at ICE.

During the expo, each start-up will be granted a fifteen-minute time slot for both Tuesday and Wednesday on the Pitch ICE stage at booth N7-460.  Each pitch will be filmed and then posted on GamCrowd’s website after ICE finishes to provide further exposure, solicit voting and ultimately determine the winner.

“Pitch ICE offers start-up companies a unique opportunity to present their business ideas directly to the most important movers and shakers in the gambling industry,” GamCrowd CEO Chris North told CalvinAyre.com.  “That type of exposure and access to potential investors is priceless and would often take similar start-ups a long time to achieve, if ever”.

Clarion, the organizers of ICE Totally Gaming, also feel that Pitch ICE provides start-ups with a unique opportunity for exposure.

Ladbrokes Enters Mexican Online Gaming Market with Sportium

Ladbrokes returns to the Mexican market through Sportium, a joint venture with Spanish operator CIRSA.

This week, Sportium, a multi-channel betting operator in Spain and official betting partner of La Liga, had launched a new regulated website in Mexico, leveraging the regulated, offline operations of Casino Life, Cirsa’s Mexico casino business.

The new website can be found at www.casinolife.com.mx and comprises sports betting & casino products, bingo and over 200 slot games. SportiumBet is the sports betting service on the site and carries a broad range of betting markets with particular focus given to the popular sports of football, basketball, baseball and American football.

Ladbrokes first outlined plans to enter the Mexican igaming market in august 2013 but regulatory issues forced a delay until this year.

A statement released by the company said that the online gambling site was authorized by the Mexico’s Ministry of the Interior and that it “meets all legal requirements and measures necessary to ensure a fair and safe gaming environment.”

“Sportium continues to grow strongly through our retail and digital channels in Spain and we see further growth opportunities in that country.  However the strength of Cirsa’s extensive offline presence across Latin America now allows the joint venture to expand in that region. This digital entry into Mexico is very much a first step in our plans not the culmination,” said Damian Cope, managing director of Ladbrokes International.

“Our ongoing International expansion offers Ladbrokes an opportunity to diversify away from the UK market.  The success we have had at building and launching brands in Belgium, Spain, Australia, and now Mexico gives us confidence that we remain on track to build a portfolio of strong International businesses,” Cope added.

Daniel Negreanu supports ticket drive to bring NHL team to Las Vegas

Professional poker player and avid hockey fan Daniel Negreanu is championing a push to bring an National Hockey League (NHL) team to Las Vegas.

Negreanu has identified himself as one of the founding members of Founding 75, a group of business people in Las Vegas that are pushing to generate interest among people to commit on making down payment on season tickets. The group is determined to collect 10,000 deposits after the ticket drive, the threshold the NHL suggested in sanctioning the trial ticket run last December 2014.

According to ESPN, if the campaign is successful and the city somehow gets awarded an expansion franchise, the deposits, which range from $150 to $900 for specific seats and season-ticket packages, will be non-refundable. If the league ends up giving the city the equivalent of a body check, then the deposits would be returned back to the people who shelled out the money.

The group is pushing to convince the NHL that a Las Vegas team would be able to thrive in the city, despite its status as America’s premier gambling town. For one, the team will have no issues finding a new arena to play in given that one is already being built by AEG and MGM Resorts International. That arena can accommodate as much as 17,500 fans and is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2016, giving it a few months to prepare for the 2016-2017 season.

The group, which Negreanu is a part of, is trying to pool up the collective interest of individuals and small-business owners instead of going after major casino operators. The belief is that the NHL would strongly consider giving Las Vegas an NHL team if it sees that there’s overwhelming interest from local residents and businesses. The drive to bring an NHL team in Las Vegas is real and Founding 75 is aggressively pushing to make it happen. The group is already spreading its reach to social media and has even set up temporary office space in the city, which will house office staff who will follow up with potential ticket buyers.

The stakes are high and the league is likely keeping a close eye on what happens during the ticket drive. If it works out, then the league would likely have discussions on the possibility of putting a team in Las Vegas, specifically the financial windfall all existing owners stand to receive from the imposed $450 million expansion fees. But if the drive struggles to gain any traction from local residents and business owners, then any chance of Las Vegas having its own NHL team could be put to pasture.

Boylesports hires Neill Garfield as new CMO; Gala Coral names Robert Fell as head of web and mobile

A couple of new hirings have happened in the iGaming industry, specifically involving Irish bookmaker Boylesports and British counterpart Gala Coral.

Boylesports has tabbed former NordicBet Managing Director Neill Garfield to be the company’s new Chief Marketing Officer.

Garfield’s new role with Boylesports is to lead the company’s efforts in expanding its presence past the Irish gaming market and into the UK market. The move is the latest indication that the Irish bookmaker is following through on its new #BetonBoyle re-branding plans, featuring a multi-content ad campaign that will now be spearheaded by Garfield.

According to EGR Magazine, Garfield is initially working out of the company’s Irish headquarters in Dundalk but is expected to move to Boylesports new office in Gibraltar.

The appointment also ends Boylesports’ three-month search for a replacement for former Marketing Director James Arnold. To its credit, the bookmaker seemed to have picked a good man for the job, at least when you consider Garfield’s track record in the industry. Before assuming his role with NordicBet, Garfield also spent time as a Marketing Manager for Paddy Power and heading Tom Waterhouse’s marketing services.

Meanwhile, Gala Coral made some management reshuffling of its own, promoting Robert Fell to head the company’s web and mobile division. The decision to promote Fell came after Gala Coral embarked on a reshuffling go its digital business. Once Fell assumes his new position to lead the development of the betting firm’s desktop and mobile products, he leaves behind his old mobile product development manager role, a position he took up shortly after joining Gala Coral in January 2014.

Before signing up with Gala Coral, Fell was a Product and Operations Manager of Paddy Power, a position he took up for almost three years. Fell’s promotion also comes at a few months after Gala Coral announced the merger of the Gala Interactive and Coral Interactive management teams. The merger led to the departure of the Coral Interactive Managing Director John O’Reilly.

Jose Montes Wins the WSOPC Choctaw Main Event

Jose Montes has defeated Benjamin Keeline, in heads-up action, to win the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event at the Choctaw Casino Resort in Oklahoma.

The World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) continues to prosper as the event at the Choctaw Casino and Resort ends with yet another Season 11 record.

Event 11#: $1,675 No-Limit Hold’em (NLHE) Main Event attracted 1,363 entries, to create a total prize pool of $2,044,500, setting the record for the largest Main Event of the season. It’s the second record set at Choctaw after it also hosted the largest-ever WSOPC event, when Ray Henson defeated 4,053 players to take the first prize in the $365 NLH Re-Entry event.

Ray Henson didn’t get near the top of this one though. That honor is bestowed to Jose Montes who turned his fourth WSOPC cash into his most significant, winning the $352,669 first prize, and securing his seat in the season-ending WSOP National Championships.

With a field so large you could be excused for thinking the final table would resemble a school of fish, it didn’t turn out that way. Montes had to find his way through a final table containing a whole series of gold rings. Two time gold ring winner Ben Reason finishing sixth, ring winner Ryan Tepen finishing ninth, and Ben Keeline coming close to claiming his second ring with his runner-up finish.

“I can show my son one day.” Montes told the WSOP journalist when talking about his own gold ring.

Montes was referring to his 11-month old son. A son who was born on the same day as Montes. Now that’s what I call a man of fortune. There is already another bun the oven and Montes plans to use part of his six-figure sum to buy a new home.

Amaya Gaming Group Win More Awards; Spin & Go Games Create Two More Millionaires

Amaya Gaming Inc. have once again been recognized for their achievements, this time being on the receiving end of awards from the Canadian technology magazine Cantech Letter.

The recognition and rewards keep rolling in for the stars of online gambling, as Amaya Gaming Inc. receive yet more awards for their sterling performance in 2014.

Cantech Letter is an online magazine that focuses on Canadian technology. It was founded in 2008 by Nick Waddell and was once described by Canadian Business Magazine as: ‘one of Canada’s premier technology newsletters.’

Each year, a select band of Cantech Letter analysts, and readers, honor the very cream of Canadian online technology, and Amaya Gaming Inc. rose to the top of that discussion to be named the TSX Tech Stock of the year. Their youthful CEO, David Baazov, was also recognized for his due diligence by being awarded the mantle of TSX Tech Executive of the Year.

It seems PokerStars and Full Tilt’s puppet master can do no wrong in the eyes of the Cantech Letter award issuance panel. Amaya were also handed the TSX Venture Stock of the Year award in 2012 & 2013, with Baazov also picking up the same award during an identical timeframe.

“It is an honor for Amaya to have received this award three years in a row, and it reflects the ongoing dedication of our employees and the sound guidance provided by our board of directors,” said Baazov.

Baazov, 34, is one of the youngest CEOs in the game and lives in Montreal with his wife and four children.

Full Tilt’s New Jersey tease; February launch for SNG Interactive

The hearts of online poker players were all-a-flutter Wednesday afternoon following messages that seemed to indicate that Amaya Gaming’s Full Tilt had been cleared to offer services in New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market. However, hopes were soon dashed after it turned out to be a digital cockup.

The confusion began when poker player Dennis Lopez (@DLO_Rican) tried logging on to Full Tilt’s free-play dot-net site on his iPhone. Lopez was presented with a splash screen indicating that Tilt’s software had been “fully licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, offering real-money gameplay on a fully regulated online gaming platform.” The notice went on to invite users to download said software and log-in with their current Full Tilt account details.

Lopez posted a screenshot of the message, which quickly circulated through the US online poker community. Sadly, Lopez found himself unable to download the advertised software and PokerStars spokesman Eric Hollreiser soon deflated hopes like so many New England footballs, saying the message was “an error” and that Amaya was investigating what had happened. (We’re looking at you, North Korea.)

Amaya has been anxiously awaiting a positive sign from New Jersey regulators as to if/when it might be allowed to take advantage of PokerStars’ nearly two-year-old online poker deal with Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino. Two weeks ago, state Sen. Ray Lesniak suggested Stars would be out of the starting blocks by March, but he offered few specifics as to how he’d arrived at this timeline.

SPORTECH TO LAUNCH NEW JERSEY ONLINE CASINO IN FEBRUARY

A more definite Resorts online launch has been promised by SNG Interactive, the joint venture of UK-based pools betting operator Sportech and Stockholm software outfit NYX Gaming. The JV partners inked an online casino deal with Resorts last June and have now scheduled a soft launch for February.

Sportech CEO Ian Penrose told eGaming Review that the casino site was still awaiting regulatory approval but that things were progressing “really well.” Penrose believes there’s “definitely room for more brands” in New Jersey and SNG remains “very ambitious’ about its ability to carve out a “strong position” in the market.

Shane Warne Devours Tinder Woman

Former 888Poker star, Shane Warne, has hit the headlines after a 43-year old mother-of-two sold a warts and all sex story about meeting the Aussie cricket legend through the dating app Tinder.

The former 888Poker star, and Australian cricket legend, Shane Warne, has hit headlines worldwide, after a 43-year old mother-of-two sold a warts and all sex story to Woman’s Day magazine about a romp with the man she described as ‘one of the best lovers’ of her life.

When will people in the limelight ever learn?

Kim McGrath has spilled the beans over her alleged sex romp with Warne, where she says the former 888Poker pro asked to ‘devour her’, after the pair met on the dating app Tinder (or shagging app as it apparently seems to be known). Now that’s quite some allegation from a man who doesn’t seem to be able to devour much without spilling it all over his chops.

In the McGrath interview, she describes how she met Warne through the dating app where he proceeded to send her a series of text messages, and the obligatory selfie, before the pair met up for a little bit of slap and tickle.

Warne’s mug is more than capable of filling the pages of most national tabloids, so one wonders about his George Michael style of cloak and dagger.

“Can I trust you? Are you private? This has to stay between us? X” He allegedly texted to the mother-of-two.

Cubits goes ICE Totally Gaming 2015 and announces partnership with SoftSwiss

Cubits, one of the latest additions to the world of Bitcoin marketplaces, is dedicated to bringing a blend of speed, simplicity and security to the buying, transferring, and shopping with Bitcoin.

One of the very few Bitcoin firms based out of Europe, designed and built with German engineering and fully supporting 17 currencies, Cubits is making its mark with the Cubits Wallet for everyday users and Cubits Pay for merchants.

Cubits is proud of recently agreed partnerships in the online gaming industry. Cubits will co-sponsor Europe’s biggest gaming exhibition this year, ICE Totally Gaming, where CEO Tim Rehder will share both insight and experiences in light of the firm’s recent achievements in the gaming industry. Furthermore, together with SoftSwiss CEO Ivan Montik, he will elaborate on their integration process and explain the ease of integrating Bitcoin into existing gaming platforms and operators. “With Cubits, we have found a strong partner for fiat-bitcoin payments, connected not only by language, but also a common ideology of bringing customers the highest degree of quality and innovation.” – Ivan Montik.

SoftSwiss is one of the largest online B2B casino companies, with over 14 online casinos to their credit. Cubits will begin handling the Bitcoin payments for BitStarz, one of SoftSwiss’s biggest and most successful online casinos, BetChain, a hugely popular Bitcoin casino, and finally, their newest addition, Princess Star. When it comes to choosing our partners, Cubits places an extremely high level of attention to KYC policies. Cubits knows all of its partners adhere to the highest standards in legality, security, and fair business practices. BitStarz, BetChain and Princess Star, as iterations of SoftSwiss, are all fully licensed.

For these online casinos, Cubits has added 2-Way deposit functionality. This helps customers simplify the way they deposit Bitcoin into their accounts, regardless of whether they have a Bitcoin wallet or not. Cubits handles the deposit of regular currency, instantly buys Bitcoin on behalf of the customer and transfers the Bitcoin amount to their gaming account. This streamlined system helps online casinos move quicker into the Bitcoin arena while at the same time slowly integrating everyday players into using Bitcoin, but without pushing it on them.

“This system is a valuable tool for online casinos and online merchants alike, because it creates a seamless checkout process when making deposits and payments. We are very excited to launch this service with SoftSwiss”, says Tim Rehder. One of the most exciting features of this payment functionality is the ability for customers to sign up with Cubits and acquire Bitcoin instantly, all the while maintaining their merchant’s purchase window live and intact. In a few easy steps, not only has a customer made a satisfactory purchase, but is now also a Bitcoin user through Cubits wallet.

When making online purchases, going through numerous extra steps like navigating away from the merchant’s page can often cause a timeout, which could lead to lost business. Cubits new integrated payment functionality not only avoids these potential losses, but helps grow the Bitcoin-using community, therefore generating more business for Bitcoin-accepting merchants.

Confessions of a Poker Writer: Boobs, Bluff and Bollocks

In this week’s confessions series, Lee Davy, gives the readers an insight into how the universe sends him his writing ideas.

Where do you get your ideas from?

That’s a question I get asked a lot, although I never used to understand why? Ideas came naturally to me, so I didn’t understand why it could be a problem for people? I now understand that people who have this problem are stuck in a perpetual loop of mind-fucked inaction because of the way they think. The thought of generating ideas is difficult for them, and so by thinking that, it becomes their reality. So, my first piece of advice is stop thinking like that.

If you open your mind a little. If you can believe that your thoughts generate your reality, and use that to your advantage by asking for writing ideas to trip you up as you walk down the road – it will happen. Your problem will vanish.

Here is an example of how numerous ideas have come my way since last night. This is not a milestone blog post. It’s a snapshot in time, and I will repeat this process when I think it will be beneficial to readers.

One important note before I blab on any further. You can expand this way of thinking, and incorporate it into any area of your life. Shit man, you can make this way of being the core of your life. I know that I do.

I am having a conversation with myself about Facebook. It’s pissing me off. It used to be a forum where I could catch up on my friend’s lives. Now it’s a relentless reel of video content that momentarily gives me motion sickness.

Gold Moon latest junket to close Macau VIP room, turn to regional markets

Casino junket operator Gold Moon Group is closing one of its VIP gaming rooms in Macau in order to focus on other regional markets. After nearly three years in operation, Gold Moon’s VIP room at Sands China’s Sands Cotai Central is closing, leaving the company with four remaining rooms in Macau.

Gold Moon director Chiu Siu Fung said there would be no staff redundancies as a result of the closure. Affected staff will be offered work at Gold Moon’s remaining 70 tables located at the Wynn Macau (12 tables), Galaxy Macau (14), Melco Crown’s Altira (35) and Macau Legend Development’s Pharaoh’s Palace Casino (9) at the Landmark Hotel, which operates under a SJM Holdings license.

Speaking to GGRAsia, Chiu acknowledged that the room at Sands Cotai Central “has not been doing really well” but insisted Gold Moon remained “stable” and focused on a number of expansion plans. Aside from gaming, the company operates a Hong Kong-based food souvenir business as well as restaurants – and soon a travel agency – in Macau.

Gold Moon is determined to boost its presence in markets outside Macau. Chiu says the firm has been luring clients to markets like Australia, Vietnam and the Philippines for “about a year” and expects business will ultimately be generated “half-and-half” between Macau and international markets. But Macau will “absolutely remain as our major market.”

The David Group junket is also putting increased emphasis on international markets. Last weekend, the operator announced it would close three of its seven VIP rooms in Macau, keeping them in ‘hibernation’ until the declining VIP market rebounds. With a travel company and planes of its own, David Group is eyeing the same markets as Gold Moon, with South Korea thrown in for good measure.

The two junkets will have lots of overseas company, including the Hengsheng Group, which saw VIP revenue take a tumble in 2014 and has since struck deals with the Crown Casino in Da Nang and the Walkerhill in South Korea. iGamiX analyst Ben Lee said junkets were embarking on their “biggest expansion phase ever” in a bid to replace the lost revenue in Macau.

Ambrose So, CEO of SJM Holdings, told the Hong Kong Economic Journal that there was little evidence that Macau’s VIP room closures had gone viral. So said Macau’s junket industry wouldn’t “jump on the bandwagon” and that any closures would “depend on the financial statement of individual enterprises.”

Payment and Fraud Trends in 2015

Yuval Ziv, COO at payments technologies provider SafeCharge, takes a look at some of the payment trends and challenges which companies trading online in 2015 will face and how to combat them.

The payments world is rapidly advancing technologically and globally, giving rise to many future payment possibilities for users and similarly allowing merchants to attract and connect with others around the world. It is now possible for a user to make payments on the move via mobile devices, enjoy access to multiple payment methods and currency options and feel secure in the knowledge that their sensitive data is protected due to new tools being developed to combat fraudulent activity.

Localisation of payments. A borderless world gives rise to countless global payment opportunities. By introducing multiple alternative payment methods and currencies, merchants are able to increase their global presence. What is key for merchants is the management of currencies and enabling their end-users to pay / checkout and withdraw funds globally. An example is the current economic situation in Russia where the Rouble has hit an all-time low. A merchant operating in Russia has a number of expenses which needs to be settled in Roubles, however if the merchant is paid out in Dollars, a second conversion to Roubles will result in a loss due to currency fluctuations. A merchant that uses the expertise of a payments provider partner will be able to make use of a few currency features; Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) offered within the payment page allows the merchant to select his preferable currency, and the settlement feature which gives a merchant the opportunity to settle in like for like currency, i.e. Rouble to Rouble, therefore not needing to depend on currency changes. These features enable merchants to reduce their risk to currency exposure.

Mobile payments. Paying via mobile is not new, however more advanced tools for mobile payments have recently been introduced making online payments easier and simpler. These new payment tools lead to a higher conversion rate. Mobile hackers have become a new threat and although not yet particularly sophisticated, it will only be a matter of time before systems are cracked and sensitive data compromised.

Identifying and combatting new fraud trends. A number of fraud trends can be identified;

Identity Fraud – Recently new fraudulent trends have been identified. There is a growing occurrence of users in some countries obtaining credit cards from the US illegally. They then use multiple cards and rack up high amount transactions. Another case is when stolen credit cards from the US pass complete authentication for 3D Secure.

Fraud Rings – Fraud rings are increasingly prevalent, and especially in online poker as there is the opportunity for a group of fraudulent players to collude together to defraud a legitimate player, or for a group to launder stolen credit card funds onto a genuine credit card or into an anonymous e-Wallet.

Mohegan Sun sues Massachusetts Gaming Commission; Steve Wynn’s pay cut

Casino operator Mohegan Sun has joined the city of Revere in its lawsuit against the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). The suit, which was filed in October, accuses the MGC of giving preferential treatment to Wynn Resorts, which beat out Mohegan Sun for the lone Boston-area casino license in September.

The Connecticut-based Mohegan Sun’s filing claims the company has been “substantially harmed” by the MGC’s “numerous violations of its statutory obligations and its arbitrary and capricious actions” during the application vetting process. In reaching its decision, the MGC cited the higher number of jobs Wynn’s $1.6b proposal would create, as well as the higher percentage of revenue Wynn planned to draw from out of state gamblers than that envisioned by Mohegan Sun’s proposal in Revere.

Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority CEO Mitchell Etess told the Associated Press that the company had never previously launched a legal action protesting the awarding of a casino license but the company felt it was “really not treated fairly” during the “gravely flawed” approval process.

The lawsuit alleges that Wynn was given preferential treatment by the MGC, which allowed Wynn to revise and resubmit significant portions of its proposal, an advantage denied to Mohegan Sun. The suit also claims that the MGC let Wynn’s application slide on a dozen legally required conditions, including neighboring community obligations.

Those community obligations were a constant complaint of Boston mayor Martin Walsh, who felt Wynn was offering his city far less than Mohegan Sun had offered to offset the effect the new casino would have on regional traffic. Boston filed its own lawsuit against the MGC earlier this month and has refused to accept a $1m payment from Wynn.

STEVE WYNN’S PAY PACKET SHRINKS … OR DOES IT?

Speaking of Wynn checks, the company recently revealed it had cut the annual salary of CEO Steve Wynn (pictured). A Securities and Exchange Commission filing revealed that Steve’s pay packet had been reduced from $4m to $2.5m. Wynn spokesman Michael Weaver said the company was making “significant changes” to its executive compensation in a bid to put a more definite link between pay and company performance.

UK bookies launch ‘Bad Betty’ responsible gambling TV campaign

UK bookmakers have launched a new £2m responsible gambling campaign intended to remind punters to curb their impulses when gambling stops being enjoyable. The Senet Group, whose ranks include Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and William Hill, have debuted a pair of new TV adverts centered around the message that: “when the fun stops, stop.”

The TV spots (viewable below) follow a print and online campaign that launched earlier this month and were created by marketing firm The Corner. The ads – one targeting users of fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBT) and the other targeting sports bettors – both involve a take on Ram Jam’s legendary 1977 rendition of Leadbelly’s blues standard Black Betty. In each spot, a losing gambler is shown throwing a bit of a tantrum, after which everyone else breaks into song, warning the punter of the dangers of ‘Bad Betty’ behavior.

The Senet Group was formed in the wake of relentless efforts by some of the UK’s more hysterical media outlets to paint FOBT as mechanical manifestations of the Antichrist. At the same time, local councils were becoming increasingly antagonistic towards the opening of new betting shops. Figuring they’d best act before government imposed even stricter controls, the bookies agreed to rid their shops of FOBT marketing, to dedicate a portion of shop windows to responsible gambling messages and to launch the new TV campaign.

Former Civil Service Commissioner Wanda Goldwag has been named the Senet Group’s chair and independent standards commissioner. Speaking at the campaign’s launch this week, Goldwag said she’d soon be paying a visit to Gibraltar in the hopes of encouraging additional online betting operators to join the Group’s founding four members.

CRACKS EMERGE IN UK COALITION OVER GAMBLING ADS

Meanwhile, delays in publishing the UK government’s review of gambling ads are causing rifts in the ruling coalition. In a letter leaked to the Daily Mail, Liberal Democrat MP and Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander urged the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to get a move on because betting ads were taking over television.

Alexander said it had “become almost impossible to watch any kind of sports event without being bombarded by highly solicitous advertising.” Alexander scorned the “grubby deal cooked up by the last Labour government” that permitted gambling ads to run in sporting events before the 9pm ‘watershed.’ Alexander has yet to weigh in on the appropriateness of the Senet Group’s ‘Bad Betty’ ads, which will also run alongside major sporting events.
