March Madness 2015: Sportsbooks all smiles after first two rounds of the tournament
With the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in the middle of a three-day hiatus, it’s given us a few days to sit back and reflect on all the action that happened in the first two rounds of the tournament. As millions of people lament the state of their busted brackets, sportsbooks are quietly sitting back and exulting the favorable results that went their way in the tournament. For the most part, books ended up on the winning end as underdogs dominated the first two rounds.
The first day of the tournament was particularly gnarly for the public as the two most popular bets of the day – favorites and the over total – each went 4-12. It was that bad for the public and set the stage for the books to absorb the hits they took when the faves fared a little better in the next three days.
But that first day was important because a lot of underdogs not only covered their spreads, but some of them even won their games outright. That day alone saw two 3 seeds – Iowa State and Baylor – bow out after losses to UAB and Georgia State, respectively. 6 seed SMU suffered a particularly devastating if not controversial loss at the hands of 11 seed UCLA. Then there were the tricky spread games where the lower seed entered the game as the underdog – only for the higher seed to win but still fail to cover. It’s confusing, I know, but I’m referring to the VCU-Ohio State game.
Even double-digit favorites like 1 seed Kentucky, 2 seed Arizona, 3 seed Notre Dame, and 4 seed North Carolina all failed to cover their respective spreads, belying the publicly known belief that high seeds should have no problem disposing of the happy-to-be-there teams.
Rio Ferdinand draws criticism for Casino Floor endorsement; United comeback on the table?
QPR football player and former England National Team stalwart Rio Ferdinand has found himself in hot water from fans over his recent endorsement of online gaming site Casino Floor. The ex-Manchester United star was recently named a brand ambassador for the site and while it is an exciting way to build up his business ties once his playing days are over, Ferdinand’s decision to endorse Casino Floor was met with intense backlash from fans who branded the footballer “irresponsible” and “money-grabbing.”
The backlash, it seems came after Ferdinand sent a tweet promoting the site and a promotion to anybody who signs up and plays on that specific day. Unfortunately for Ferdinand, Twitter trolls came out of the woodworks and teed off on his decision to associate himself with an online gaming site.
While there’s nothing wrong with Ferdinand’s tweet, he might have erred by not filtering his tweet with an “adult content” alert on the page. Best intentions aside, Ferdinand’s decision to partner with Casino Floor will come with inherent criticism that’s really out of his control. His stature – he has over six million Twitter followers – in the world of English football will always put his words and actions under the proverbial microscope. Ferdinand is regarded as one of the best defenders English football has had in recent memory. He’s also compiled a career that includes numerous titles with Manchester United and 81 caps for the Three Lions, with spells as the team’s captain and vice captain sprinkled in.
Naturally, tweets like the one he sent out promoting Casino Floor will draw the attention of a lot of people so when it comes to unfortunate incidents like this, Ferdinand might be served to better understand Twitter’s filtering features, which includes the aforementioned adult content alert and the always handy “block” feature.

Alderney suspends Metro Play License; 666Bet loses Leyton Orient Sponsorship
Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) joins UK in suspending Metro Play Limited license, which covers both the Metroplay.com and 666bet.com sites.
On March 20, AGCC Executive Director André Wilsenach issued a hearing notice to Metro Play Limited and suspended its operations immediately.
Due to the suspension, Metro Play and its business associates can no longer register any new customers or accept deposits from existing customers and are required to process all customer withdrawals immediately on request.
“The grounds for the decision to call the licensee to a hearing of the Commission and to suspend its license relate largely to serious concerns about the existing control and management of Metro Play,” said Wilsenach. “It would not have been in the interest of customers, the eGambling industry or the reputation of Alderney to allow Metro Play to continue its operations.”

Dunnhumby Clive Humby on Tesco ClubCard and Customer Loyalty Program
Rebecca Liggero talks to Dunnhumby Clive Humby as he talks about Tesco ClubCard and Customer Loyalty Program.
Tesco Clubcard is the loyalty card of leading British supermarket chain Tesco and operates in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and several other countries, and in the UK market in particular has been highly successful, with over 15 million members as of 2010.
Why do you have loyalty cards in your retailer?
“Because you don’t know who your customers are. This way you can join their shopping basket together and see: what they like buying, when they like buying it and what they’re doing. And it’s very powerful for the retailer and powerful for their suppliers,” Humby said.
