DoubleDown Casino class action suit; Rational add Zynga social casino director

IGT’s popular social gaming division DoubleDown Interactive has been slapped with a class action lawsuit based on claims that its social casino products represent “camouflaged” gambling.

Illinois resident Margo Philips claims she lost over $1k over the past two years gambling with virtual chips she’d purchased to play DoubleDown’s social casino games. Philips’ complaint explains how none of the chips she won playing on DoubleDown were able to be withdrawn as cash, despite these chips being “identical to the chips that defendant sells” to its players. Philips argues that DoubleDown’s casino games are “nothing more than camouflaged unlawful games of chance.”

Philips purports to be one of “thousands of Illinois consumers” who have each lost at least $50 on DoubleDown, which she claims has “illegally profited” from their game play. Philips is seeking to recover all the real cash these consumers have paid to obtain DoubleDown gambling chips. Philips also wants to see DoubleDown shut down because its software allegedly fits the definition of a prohibited “gambling device.”

Illinois is ground zero for zany class action suits against online gaming, be they real money or virtual money sites. An Illinois court recently tossed the latest in a long line of attempts by a few opportunistic Illinois residents looking to recoup other players’ gambling losses at online poker outfits PokerStars and Full Tilt prior to those companies’ acquisition by Canada’s Amaya Gaming.

THE DP INTERVIEW: Tom Masterman VP, Business Development at SportsData US subsidiary of Sportradar

THE DAILY PAYOFF sat down with Tom Masterman VP, Business Development at SportsData US subsidiary of Sportradar for a conversation on big data, analytics, and its impact with respect to gaming.  You can find Tom on twitter @TomMasterman

TheDailyPayoff: Tell us about the recent partnership with Nascar and the role of data analytics.

Tom Masterman: Unlike athletes, vehicles are wired from bumper to bumper. Each team is continually optimizing a large amount of real time data. This partnership provides unparalleled access to unique real-time race data, in an easy-to-consume API.

For the first time, developers looking to build NASCAR-related products have a data source. The result will be a host of new engaging products which appeal to broader sports data fan base.

TDP: There are many examples of how analytics influence daily fantasy especially with paid applications. What is the effect now and what do you predict moving forward?

TM: Every fantasy player is looking for an advantage over his or her peers. With our data, projection products like those created by Accuscore and numberFire, predict not only how a player should preform in tonight’s matchup but how an injury would impact the rest of the players season. With the Daily Fantasy industry continuing to grow so will the market for products that predict accurately and granularly.

TDP: What are two unique ways Sportsdata has worked with a property to amplify fan experience?

TM: Our rich NCAA metadata enables BlacherReport to provide quality coverage for smaller schools and conferences. This aligns with BleacherReports’s strategic focus on a customized fan experience. Now it’s not just Duke and Kentucky fans that can feel connected their favorite team’s latest news, scores, and statistics.

With Facebook we have been able to add context to trending topic pages by providing real time scores and in-game images. Facebook is now creating an organized way for fans to socially interact with other people who share a vested interest in the same games, teams, and players.

TDP: What is one property that does big data right?

TM: FiveThirtyEight is one that comes to mind. From sports to politics, Nate Silver’s group does a tremendous job at culling out useful and entertaining insights. They highlight the importance of telling stories with data and making it more digestible for a consumer who wouldn’t normally be drawn to a certain topic.

TDP: In 6 months to a year what are we talking about with respect to sports analytics?

TM: With new player tracking technology including RFID chips and other wearables, we see a future where bio metrics and telemetric data are as common as hits, touchdowns, and rebounds.

Janet Rome Talks Racing and Her Shared Belief

By America’s Best Racing for @TheDailyPayoff

Janet Rome is the wife of sports personality Jim Rome and the mother to their two sons, Jake and Logan. Together Jim and Janet own Jungle Racing, which has campaigned, in partnership, top racehorses including Mizdirection, Gypsy Robin and most recently champion Shared Belief, who is expected to be a heavy favorite in Saturday’s $1.5-million Charles Town Classic Stakes.

We sat down with janet recently to talk horses, racing, heroes and philosophy.

What does it feel like to own Shared Belief, the No. 1-ranked racehorse in the world?

It’s almost indescribable as it doesn’t even seem real. Shared Belief has taken us all on a ride of a lifetime. We love him, and we’re all just grateful to be a part of Team Shared Belief!

How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing:

Growing up in Long Beach, Calif., about once a year my parents would take my brothers and me to Los Alamitos and Santa Anita Park. I remember how exciting it was to watch the horses run past. I didn’t really understand Thoroughbred racing until I was in the radio broadcasting business in San Diego. I would go with friends from the Noble Broadcast Group to Del Mar a few times during the season and we would have such memorable times.

Favorite race track(s):

Del Mar and Santa Anita. You can’t beat those beautiful views and weather anywhere!

My favorite Thoroughbred racing event:

The Breeders’ Cup.

Other sports/teams I follow:

West Coast Baseball Club’s 10- and 14-year-old teams. You can find this mom at their practices and games almost every night of the week.

What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing:

More marketing and promotion to bring in a younger group of fans. More people involved in groups like CARMA, which raises funds for the care and retraining of retired Thoroughbreds.

Touchbet’s Magnus Hedman confirmed as new Pinnacle Sports owner

The man behind sports betting risk management outfit Touchbet Ltd. has been revealed as the new owner of online bookmaker Pinnacle Sports.

In February, longtime online fixture Pinnacle announced it had completed the sale of a controlling interest in the company the previous August. The company subsequently announced a new focus on obtaining licenses and doing business in regulated markets but the identity of the company’s new overlord(s) has remained a tightly guarded secret.

Until Wednesday, that is, when eGamingReview reported that Pinnacle’s new boss is none other than Magnus Hedman, founder of Malta-based B2B risk management and sports betting odds supplier Touchbet.

Pinnacle CEO Paris Smith said she was “proud” to confirm Hedman’s acquisition although she said the company had felt no urgency in revealing Hedman’s identity. Smith said Pinnacle’s “culture has always been to remain low-key and let our unrivalled product speak for itself.”
