NJ Gov. Christie Supports Casino Expansion to North Jersey

By @TheDailyPayoff

Citing the gambling competition by other casinos, the governor of New Jersey today said he would have no problem with placing a referendum on the ballot to ultimately expand casino gambling in the northen part of the state, according to a report on NJ.com.

He tied his support to the initiative as long as the revenue helped revitalize ailing Atlantic City.

Cash-poor daily fantasy sports operator ScoreStreak “pauses” operations

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator ScoreStreak has temporarily ceased operation due to a lack of operating capital.

ScoreStreak launched with great fanfare a year ago but the company disabled registration and real-money play on its website this week. A message posted to the site’s frequently asked questions page said the service was being “paused over the next few weeks” but didn’t offer a more specific timeline on when the site might be back up and running.

Players are barred from making further deposits but can request withdrawals of their account balances. However, withdrawals for non-depositing users will only be processed “once our next round of funding is complete.”

Which brings us to the reason behind ScoreStreak’s ‘pause’. With admirable frankness, the FAQ states: “Simply put, we need to raise more money.” ScoreStreak says that while it has “grown our users and contest entries each month … our expenses are still higher than our revenues.” Without the money to pay technical or support personnel, ScoreStreak says it had little option but to hit the pause button.

Court ruling gives Caesars six more months to craft its bankruptcy plan

Casino operator Caesars Entertainment Corporation (CEC) has won a court ruling extending its control over the bankruptcy of its main unit.

In January, CEC’s main unit Caesars Entertainment Operating Co. (CEOC) filed for bankruptcy in Chicago, citing $18b in unmanageable debt. On Wednesday, US Bankruptcy Judge Benjamin Goldgar ruled that CEC could have another six months in which to craft its restructuring plan – which involves splitting CEOC into a casino operator and a real estate investment trust – without the threat of rival proposals from disgruntled creditors.

CEOC’s junior creditors – many of whom stand to receive pennies on the dollar from the restructuring plan – protested CEC’s desire to remain in control, but Goldgar said CEOC’s “exceptionally involved” corporate footprint influenced his decision. “The sheer mass weight, volume and complication here is extraordinary.” Caesars has been given until Nov. 15 to file its bankruptcy plan and until Jan. 15, 2016 to solicit votes on its proposal.

Goldgar also disappointed junior creditors by allowing CEC to retain Kirkland & Ellis LLP as its bankruptcy attorneys. The law firm also represents other companies held by CEC’s main private equity owners – Apollo Management and TPG Capital – and creditors had protested this apparent conflict of interest.
