High Stakes Game in TV Ratings

American Pharoah’s run to the Triple Crown grabbed our fair share of attention recently, watching intently as the once-in-a-generation thoroughbred won graded stakes at Churchill Downs, Pimlico and Belmont Raceway.
American Pharoah delivered on the track, but his Triple Crown win translated into only 18.6 million television viewers on NBC, down from the 20.6 million fans who tuned into California Chrome’s failed bid at The Belmont in 2014. When Pharoah had the Triple Crown on the line at The Belmont, you might’ve thought the stakes were as high as they’d get ,but as spring turns to summer and the stretch-run at Belmont is in the rearview, there’s no higher stakes in professional sports than that of the TV ratings game.
Certainly the National Hockey League and NBC benefitted from a strong audience lead-in from The Belmont, as Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final calculated a tune-in of 6.6 million viewers for Game 2 of the series between the Tampa Bay Lightening and Chicago Blackhawks, the strongest non-clinching game TV audience since 1994. The data will improve as the Stanley Cup series, split 2-2 as of this writing, moves on to Tampa for a pivotal fifth game.
Meanwhile, after the longest break in NBA playoff history between the Conference Finals and the NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of a memorable NBA Finals series, with MVP Steph Curry of the Warriors and the league’s best player, Lebron James of the Cavs doing battle on the court. However, the real numbers are being crunched off the court by the Disney Corporation, the caretakers of ABC Sports, cash cow cable entity ESPN and the NBA on ESPN property.
As of this writing, the 2015 NBA Finals are the highest-rated ever on ABC with Game 4 delivering a 13.9 overnight rating to be joined with the league’s soaring numbers after the first three games of the Finals. Those ratings points translate to some 18.6 million viewers turning into the series, with the numbers — like the NHL’s — sure to go up as the league is guaranteed no fewer than six games to determine the champion.
Delving deeper into the NBA on ABC numbers, the Nielsen ratings in Game 4 were up 31 percent from the Miami vs. San Antonio numbers of a year ago with the ABC ratings averaging 13.1 (overnight), up some 26 percent over 2014. Of course, those are record-setting numbers for ABC Sports and do not factor against the record numbers the NBA did when NBC Sports carried the property. During that run, veteran broadcast chief Dick Ebersol put the pedal to the metal to promote Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to the tune of a Game 6 1998 NBA Finals record rating of 18 No fewer than 30 million tuned into the NBA from United States households, alone, never mind the growing international audience for basketball.
To be clear, the television ratings game of the winter-spring sports, such as horse racing, ice hockey and basketball cannot and will not compete with the television audience for the NFL’s biggest game – The Super Bowl. Last February, the New England Patriots exciting victory over the Seattle Seahawks saw a Nielsen rating blockbuster of 47.5 that translated to a US audience of 114.4 million viewers for the NFL and TV’s biggest audience of the year. Quite simply, there will never be a sporting audience viewing a game on TV that is larger than the NFL’s Super Bowl audience.
The other interesting point of comparison in the high stakes ratings game for televised sports properties in Major League Baseball which saw an 8.2 ratings average and 13.8 million viewers tune into the 2014 World Series, according to Sports Media Watch. Between Jordan’s last game in 1998 and 2008, the World Series consistently out-rated the NBA Finals. But, over the past five years (2010-2014), the NBA Finals has out-rated Major League Baseball’s World Series and the trend is surely going to continue in 2015, unless October brings about a miracle story (Insert Chicago Cubs joke here!)
One other interesting factor in televised sports ratings is to look at the numbers from the competing local markets. In Cleveland, Game 4 of the NBA Finals generated a 45.7 rating for the 20+ point Golden State blowout of the Cavs. In the Bay Area (SF market), the broadcast delivered a solid 30.5 rating. Pretty amazing audience numbers for the NBA which was largely criticized, especially by NASCAR and Fox Sports tv executives, when the 2003 NBA Finals drew all-time ratings lows of 6.5 for the New Jersey Nets vs. San Antonio Spurs series.
That was a long time ago.

Atlantic City’s surviving eight casinos post revenue gain in May
Atlantic City’s eight remaining casinos posted a modest revenue gain in May.
Total brick-and-mortar gaming win from AC’s eight surviving casinos came to $208.6m, up 4.3% from the total those same eight earned in the same month last year. If you count the $12.5m generated by New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market, May’s numbers are up 5.3% to $221.1m.
Half of AC’s elite eight posted revenue gains in May, but the market-leading Borgata wasn’t among them. The Borgata saw revenue fall 5% to $52.2m, but this was more than enough to fend off second-place finisher Harrah’s, which rose 8.2% to $33.3m.
Caesars posted the biggest monthly gain, rising 51% to $27.7m, enough to top the Tropicana’s $25.1m, which was flat year-on-year. The Golden Nugget rose 19.3% to $19.4m, edging out the Trump Taj Mahal’s $18.5m (-14.5%) and Bally’s $18.2m (-12.1%). Resorts brought up the rear with $14.2m, up 16.9%.

New Jersey online gambling revenue rises nearly one-fifth in May
New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market was up nearly one-fifth in May although total revenue dipped slightly from the previous month.
New Jersey’s five licensed online gambling operations reported total revenue of $12.5m in May, up 19.1% from the same month last year but down 1.5% from April 2015’s total. Online casino revenue was up 28.7% year-on-year to $10.55m while poker fell 15.2% to $1.92m. For the year-to-date, the state’s online gambling market is up 12.6% to $60.3m, with casino games up 28% to $49.8m and poker down 28.3% to $10.5m.
The market-leading Borgata/Bwin.party/Pala Interactive combo reported online revenue of $3.96m, essentially unchanged from the previous month. The Borgata earned $2.86m from casino and $1.1m from poker, with each vertical also relatively unchanged from April’s results.
The Golden Nugget’s casino-only site generated $3.06m, down about 10% from April, but still nearly five times what the site generated in the same month last year.

MGT sells DraftDay for $7m, Sportech Digital to manage operations
MGT Capital Investments has sold its daily fantasy sports (DFS) assets, including DraftDay, to a new group that will task UK pools betting operator Sportech with managing DraftDay’s operations.
On Friday, MGT announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell DraftDay and the MGT Sports B2B network to a new entity called Random Outcome USA Inc. for a total consideration of $7m. MGT will get $4m cash upfront and will retain a $3m equity stake in DraftDay. MGT believes the transaction will close by the end of the current quarter.
Sportech PLC subsidiary Sportech Digital will manage DraftDay’s operations. Sportech Digital president Rich Roberts believes “a focused DFS business to be delivered on a B2B partnership basis to the regulated gaming industry has the potential to quickly disrupt the rapidly growing market.”
Random Outcome CEO Curtis Wm. Krawetz said the fusion of DraftDay and Sportech “creates the dominant B2B player in the DFS space.” MGT CEO Robert Ladd said DraftDay “could not be going into better hands, and we firmly believe our residual interest will undergo enormous appreciation under Sportech’s leadership, relationships and access to capital.”

French government to push for exclusive gambling clubs in Paris
The French government has ruled out the idea of putting large casinos in Paris but remains open to the launch of London-style members-only gambling ‘clubs.’
Casinos have been barred from the city of lights since 1920, but small-scale cercles de jeux opened to fill the void. In 2008, France began closing these ostensibly non-profit venues – including the fabled poker room Aviation Club de France – due to the widely held suspicion that the Corsican mafia was using them to launder money.
By the time the gendarmes were finished, only two of the original 10 cercles de jeux were still operating in the city of lights. The accompanying plunge in tax contributions to the state prompted Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to ask honorary Ile-de-France prefect Jean-Pierre Duport for ideas on reviving the city’s gaming options.
On Friday, the French government finally released Duport’s report, which proposed licensing either large-scale casinos or London-style exclusive gaming clubs that would offer casino table games but no slot machines. Duport noted that, with the exception of Rome, Paris was the only major European capital without a casino. Duport estimated the government could reap €46.5m in annual tax revenue from just one Paris casino.
