Premier League Week 14 Review: 11 in a Row For Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy creates a new Premier League goalscoring record after scoring in his 11th consecutive game at home to Man Utd; Diego Costa thinks throwing a training bib at Jose Mourinho will get him back into the side, and much more.

There is nothing very Machiavellian about the Leicester City approach. Soak up the pressure, allow their opponents to control the football, and then hit them on the break.

The Foxes style of football was summed up in a single flow that turned Jamie Vardy into a young man who makes headlines by shouting out racist remarks in casinos, to a Premier League record-breaker.

Christian Fuchs ran down the right flank, something that the turgid Matteo Darmian seems utterly incapable of, and thread the ball through the eye of a needle, for Jamie Vardy to leave Ashley Young in his wake and calmly slot the ball past the onrushing David De Gea.

Mohegan Sun blackjack dealer accused of overpaying player $78k

A blackjack dealer at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun has pled not guilty to cheating the casino out of over $78k.

Roy Mariano appeared in New London Superior Court on Monday to face charges of first-degree larceny after an investigation produced evidence that the 52-year-old dealer had overpaid a particular blackjack player a total of $78,390. The player, Marlene Rivera, is facing similar charges but has yet to enter a plea.

As reported by The Day, Tribal Gaming Commissioner Robert Bjork asked the Mohegan Tribal Police to open an investigation into Mariano in September. Officer Thomas Nickerson reviewed the casino’s surveillance recordings, which revealed that Mariano had been sneaking a single $100 chip into stacks of $5 chips every time he paid Rivera for a winning hand.

Questioned by Bjork, Mariano said he’d been short of money ever since the casino shifted him from full-time to part-time employment in March. Mariano claimed Rivera approached him a few months later about participating in the scam. Mariano said he couldn’t remember exactly how big a cut of the ill-gotten gains Rivera had shared with him.

South Africa casinos return to growth after anti-online gambling campaign

South Africa’s casino lobby says the industry contributed R17.2b (US $1.13b) to the country’s gross domestic product in its most recent fiscal year.

On Monday, the Casino Association of South Africa (CASA) released its annual Survey of Casino Entertainment in South Africa, covering the 2014-15 fiscal year. CASA says this year’s annual contribution to the country’s national economy was up 4.5% from the previous year.

CASA’s figures claim South Africa’s entire gambling industry generated revenue of R24b for the fiscal year, a 9.6% year-on-year improvement. The casino industry accounted for R17.2b of this total, up 4.5% year-on-year. The casino biz also contributed R5.7b to the government in form of taxes, up 3.6% year-on-year.

CASA CEO Themba Ngobese said the figures demonstrated “the important contribution casinos make towards the South African economy.” Ngobese said CASA members’ capital expenditure in the year came to R2.3b despite the country’s economic downturn, which has seen consumers decrease spending on non-essential items like gambling.

Nevada casinos negative in October despite second-best sportsbook handle

Nevada casinos returned to negative territory in October despite sportsbooks posting their second highest monthly betting handle total.

Figures released on Monday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board showed October’s statewide casino revenue falling 2.9% from the same month last year to $887.6m. The decline was more pronounced on the Las Vegas Strip, where revenue fell 5.1% to $493.8m.

The numbers are a disappointment given September’s positive performance and particularly for spoiling a stellar month at the state’s licensed sports betting operators. Sportsbook revenue was up 21.8% to $33.6m on handle of $504.6m, the latter figure second only to November 2014’s $535m wagering total.

As ever, when the Strip’s overall numbers are worse than the statewide performance, high-volume baccarat is usually to blame. Sure enough, the game reported revenue falling 21.8% in October to $79.1m as hold slumped to 8.9% compared to 10.2% in the same month last year (which was itself down two points from October 2013).
