Israel’s PM greenlights Eilat casino study, says Adelson won’t be involved

Israel’s prime minister has given legislators the green light to proceed with a plan to authorize as many as four casinos in the coastal city of Eilat, while insisting that casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson won’t be involved.

In September, Israel announced plans to consider authorizing the nation’s first casino in Eilat, a fading tourist spot on the Red Sea coast.

On Wednesday, Ynet News reported that PM Binyamin Netanyahu had publicly authorized the formation of a steering committee led by Tourism Minister Yariv Levin to come up with a plan to allow between two and four casinos in Eilat.

The plan is for a major tourism complex to be built on the site of Eilat’s former airport. The complex would feature hotels, entertainment venues, an amusement park, retail and dining options as well as the aforementioned gaming venues.

Call to convert Strip into pedestrian zone faces an uphill battle

The question posed to Clark County commissioners seemed simple enough: Could Vegas Uncork’d, the popular food and drink festival, host a dinner on the Las Vegas Strip? The proposed event would require temporarily closing three northbound lanes of traffic between Venetian and Palazzo drives – hence approval needed from the commission. The plan drew concern from a Wynn Resorts official, who said the lane closures would prevent traffic from easily reaching other casinos.

New Jersey sports betting hearing recap

America’s best hope for legal sports betting took its best shot in a federal courtroom on Wednesday, but it’s anybody’s guess what the outcome will be.

On Wednesday, New Jersey’s efforts to offer legal sports betting to state residents had its latest day in court. The US Third Circuit Court of Appeals heard testimony from the state’s legal reps, as well as those opposed to the plan, including the federal government, four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA.

To recap very briefly, New Jersey is attempting to overthrow the 1992 federal PASPA sports betting prohibition, which limits single-game wagering to Nevada, while allowing sports lotteries/pools in three other states. The courts rejected New Jersey’s first legislative effort because it violated PASPA’s ban on states specifically authorizing or regulating betting within their borders.

But a US Department of Justice attorney had suggested during the hearing that New Jersey could sidestep PASPA via a complete or partial repeal of its state-level betting bans. New Jersey responded by allowing Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks to self-regulate sports betting activity, but the courts ultimately rejected this move as a de facto authorization of betting.
