Should DFS learn lessons from Poker?

When online poker was launched at the beginning of the century, our industry fell almost instantly in love with the innovative new business model. Driven by a high profile branding and marketing strategy, the poker sector grew spectacularly and became a fashionable and impressive mainstream success.

The speed of customer acquisition and the market place concentration that followed explains why today, most of the small poker operators no longer exist. As Marcellus said to Horatio in Hamlet, “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark”. Everyone knows that because operators were unable to protect the integrity of their fast growing ecosystem, professional players – often referred to as sharks – greedily ate all the (amateur) fishes, thus emptying the sea.

Since daily fantasy sports (DFS) is in the process of growing at rates similar to the poker sector’s and as the social mechanism of the two games are quite similar, at Oulala, we think that it is critical for our sector’s future to learn lessons from the poker industry. In other words, what systems, procedures and rules should be written by operators, to enable the professionals to exist without endangering everyone else?

NBA – What’s The Best Team To Bet On To Win The Western Conference?

Let’s just jump right in to it. Unlike an Eastern Conference that is ruled over by one team and just one potential upstart, the west is a mine field of explosive potential. The Warriors feel like the automatic bet to win the Western Conference, especially given their odds, but there’s an x-factor here that people don’t really want to talk about. Hell, I don’t even want to mention it.

Spoiler alert – it’s a really morbid talking point.

Golden State Warriors (-190 to win Western Conference)

The reasons to bet on Golden State are pretty simply. They have the best player in the league, they’re the defending champions and they just ripped off a 73-win season that will keep them in contention as one of the best teams of all time.

Gamesys Real Money Online Poker Offering on Virgin Games

Software developer Gamesys has entered the real money online poker market for the first time after creating and launching Wild Seat Poker via their Virgin Games platform.

PokerStars, et al., needn’t worry quite yet, but software developer Gamesys have dipped their toe into the lukewarm waters of real money online poker with the creation of Wild Seat Poker.

Gamesys acquired Virgin Games in January 2013 with a clear indication that they would use the platform to move into the real money gambling arena, and it’s this platform Gamesys have chosen to launch Wild Seat Poker. Virgin Games was born in 2003, as part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.

The new game is a hybrid of Texas No-Limit Hold’em (NLHE), Spin & Go and Endemol UK’s Deal or No Deal. It’s not a game that will be taken too seriously by no-nonsense grinders, but I can see the appeal for the recreational gamblers looking for a spot of poker fun.

Europa League Review: Liverpool Are The Comeback Kings of Europe

Liverpool are once again the comeback kings of Europe after coming from two goals behind on two separate occasions to beat the mighty Borussia Dortmund on a special night at Anfield.

What better way to remember the 96 men, women, and children who lost their lives 27-years ago in the Hillsborough disaster than to pull off one of Liverpool’s greatest comebacks in their rich European history.

Ok, this wasn’t no Istanbul, but Jurgen Klopp’s men had to come from two goals behind on two separate occasions to beat one of the most vibrant and vivacious teams in Europe.

Dortmund came into this tie on the back of an 18 match unbeaten streak and a desperate need to put things right. Their shoddy performance in the first leg at the Westfalenstadion gave Liverpool hope after Divock Origi secured that vital away goal.

SBOBET partners with Irish football clubs; 188Bet flexes ABP muscles in Newcastle

Asian online betting giant SBOBET has continued its quest to corner the Irish football sponsorship market.

Last month, the Isle of Man-licensed SBOBET’s parent company Celton Manx announced it had signed on as the new official betting partner of Dundalk FC. April is only half over and SBOBET has already added two more Irish footie scalps to its lodge pole.

Last week, SBOBET announced that it had inked a betting partnership with Cork City Football Club, which will allow SBOBET scads of branding opportunities at the club’s Turner’s Cross home ground and via the club’s website.

On Thursday, SBOBET announced a deal with St Patrick’s Athletic FC – the third League of Ireland Premier Division club SBOBET has inked in as many weeks – which has promised the company similar opportunities at its home turf of Richmond Park and on the club’s website.

PAGCOR urged to return casino revenue earned from stolen Bangladeshi millions

A Philippine senator is urging the country’s president to allow the country’s gaming regulator to return some of the money stolen from the Bangladeshi central bank.

Earlier this week, Eugene Manalastas, president of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), told a Senate hearing that the regulator was willing to return the share of casino revenue it earned from gaming activity involving the stolen Bangladeshi millions.

If you’re just joining us, February saw (allegedly Chinese) hackers steal $101m from Bangladeshi bank accounts in New York, of which $81m was transferred to a Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) branch in Manila. From there, the money was withdrawn through remittance firm Philrem Services Inc and then funneled through the local casino industry by two Chinese junket operators.

To date, only $5.5m of the cash has been recovered from a different junket operator, Kam Sin ‘Kim’ Wong, although Wong has promised to produce a further $9.7m within two weeks. Wong claims another $17m in still in Philrem’s hands, a claim the remittance firm’s execs have rejected. RCBC’s embattled CEO suggested this week that his firm would honor at least some of the outstanding debt to Bangladesh.
